NAME: M'sarr
RANK: Weyrling
AGE: 17 Turns
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
DRAGON: Green Luluth
APPEARANCE:
fc: Danielle Haim
M'sarr is what some people may consider a "masculine"-looking woman. She stands at 5'7" with a gaunt face and long, dark brown hair. Her body lacks the typical feminine shape; her hips are hardly wider than her shoulders, and her breasts are rather small. These features are often accentuated by her clothing; when dressed in her full riding gear, her androgynous appearance sometimes confuses those who do not know her, and many have been surprised to find that she is a woman.
Mel has no particular taste in fashion, and she typically wears what she's most comfortable in. On hot days, she will wear sheer dresses, while on colder days she may be seen wearing shirts, pants and coats. She puts enough effort into her appearance to look passable on most days.
She has no notable scars or features aside from her androgyny.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
* PARANOID: She is terrified of what she believes others think of her. M'sarr constantly works toward improving her image in others' eyes, almost always basing how they feel about her off of her own thoughts alone rather than any real, physical evidence. She can also sometimes fall into short paranoid episodes where she believes people are actually out to get her, but most of the time, she simply lives in fear of others having a negative opinion of her. This wasn't so much of an issue before coming to the Weyr, and being around other people has aggravated it to the point of it becoming a problem -- something she never had to deal with in her hometown, where she spent most of her time with her family or alone.
* EAVESDROPPER : M'sarr has a bad habit of listening in on every conversation that she happens to overhear. Even if the conversation has nothing to do with her and is overall uninteresting, she will eavesdrop in on it. Typically, the information she learns is not scandalous, and, even if it was, it would likely never travel beyond herself and Luluth.
* ESCAPIST : When her paranoia gets bad, M'sarr has the bad habit of running away from it. What she tends to do is throw all of herself into any job she is given, and, when no job is given, she will seek out work until she can work no more. Most of her days are spent tending to Luluth and doing as many Weyrling activities around the Weyr as she possibly can. When all else fails, she does odd jobs around the Weyr.
* DIFFICULT : She can be quite hard to talk to, since she seems to always have an argument, a smart quip or monosyllabic responses to most passing small talk. Her social skills are fairly underdeveloped, which frustrates many people that she tends to deal with. She does enjoy speaking with people, she just also likes to argue or make smart retorts, or just simply has nothing to say. Once she gets to know a person, she can typically gauge how she needs to react to certain situations, although the difficulty of speaking with her still tends to linger. She wasn't really aware of this being an issue until she came to the Weyr, and has since been working on becoming less socially inept; the other Weyrlings may notice a smaller amount of sarcastic quips from their peer.
* STUBBORN : M'sarr is not one to change her opinions on a whim. She is a very decisive, schedule-oriented person, and challenging anything in her life that is routine or well-known will be met with heavy skepticism, sharp words or be outright ignored. If a logical, fact-based argument is presented to her, she will listen to what the person has to say, although she would likely not be swayed to change her mind. She is not stubborn for the sake of being such; if she genuinely has no opinion on something, she will listen to all arguments for and against it and offer her own unbiased input. She also is not stubborn when it comes to being asked to do things. Unless it is something she wholeheartedly opposes, M'srr is more than happy to help out.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
* DECISIVE : She does her best to choose the "right" thing to do or think, and once M'sarr comes up with a decision or formulates an opinion, she will always stand by it. She will defend her logic and reasoning, although this isn't to imply that she doesn't listen to criticism. She will always consider others' views and opinions, although anything short of straight facts and clear logic will not sway her decision or opinion.
* MOTIVATED : M'sarr is a very kind person, and this kindness is the motivation for most, if not all, things that she does. She always strives to do what she can to help others, and pushes herself above and beyond whenever she knows people are relying on her for something. She is always on time, on schedule and prepared for each and every day, and will find helpful things to do in her downtime.
* THOROUGH : She is very thorough in any task allotted to her. While M'sarr is by no means a perfectionist, she is motivated to do the best work that she can, and that is exactly what she does. She tends to be rather analytical toward things, and tends to use that approach when given a task, often laying out a clear schedule in her mind to adhere to until it is completed. When working on something which she is passionate about, she will leave no stone unturned in her search to understand whatever it is she is looking into. This leeches somewhat into her personal life as well, as she can sometimes come off as nosy or insensitive with her questions directed about people.
* PATIENT : M'sarr understands that things take time, and she is perfectly fine with biding that time. She is not patient in the sense that she can sit still and do nothing; rather, that she is not bothered by not having an immediate answer or obvious resolution to a problem. She is not quite as patient with people as she is with ideas and answers; in fact, she can be incredibly impatient with others, especially if she judges them to be incompetent. Also, she is unable to sit idly by and wait for an answer; she has to be doing something. It doesn't have to be related to the situation at hand, but M'sarr simply cannot not work for long periods of time.
* RESOURCEFUL : She is certainly a product of her raising. M'sarr grew up in a family of farmers in Igen Hold, and thus had to think of creative solutions to problems rather often. They didn't have much money, so strange fixes to ordinary problems were necessary. She also has this talent in her manner of thinking. M'sarr can come up with a unique solution to a problem quickly if necessary.
FAMILY:
Mecci - Mother
Zylessar - Father
Myclessar - Sister
Z'hi - Brother, Bronzerider of Igen Weyr
HISTORY:
M'sarr was born and raised in Igen Hold. Her family has, for generations, owned a farm there. M'sarr is the youngest of three siblings by seven Turns. Her family had fallen on hard times after the birth of their first daughter, Myclessar. They had met a time of prosperity and had decided to add something to the family farm: runnerbeasts. Unfortunately, the creatures were never able to conceive a foal that lived for more than a day and the family was simply left with two aging runnerbeasts and little money at the time of M'sarr's birth.
As a child, she had few playmates her age. Her siblings were both too old to enjoy her company, although her sister had always been a very maternal presence in her formative years. While she had plenty of opportunity to play with the other children her age, M'sarr rarely went out with them unless they were doing something ridiculous; instead, she preferred to stay at the farm and tend to the runnerbeasts. While old, they still had a lot of life ahead of them, and it was M'sarr's job to give them their daily exercise. She became a fairly good rider and was shaping up to become a good candidate for the Beastcrafthall.
Sometime during her childhood -- exactly when is fuzzy -- her brother, Z'hi, was Searched. M'sarr remembers the day fairly well, as she had been riding one of the runnerbeasts around the property to check the redfruit trees. A green dragon flew overhead and landed near their home. She arrived at the house as Z'hi was being pulled onto dragonback and whisked away to Igen Weyr. They didn't go to his Impression, but later learned by runner that he had impressed a bronze dragon.
Unfortunately, Z'hi had never had an incredibly close bond with his family and had been planning to move away from the family farm as soon as he could. Any stipend he earned or privilege he had as a rider never reached the family. Without his help around the farm, more work was placed on everyone. The runnerbeasts became a point of contention, as they were a luxury commodity to keep just for M'sarr's enjoyment. In fact, they shouldn't have even been able to keep them as long as they had; the local runnerbeastcrafter simply felt bad about giving the family infertile beasts and opted to feed them. They allowed M'sarr to keep the smaller of the two, but sold the other to keep things afloat.
Soon thereafter, M'sarr was approached by a journeyman beastcrafter soon after they sold the runnerbeast. The man said that she showed capacity to be a good potential runnerbeastcrafter, and offered her an apprenticeship at the Beastcrafthall in Keroon Hold. She was thrilled about this, although ultimately decided that she was needed more around her family farm and denied the chance. The journeyman said he understood, and that he would be back next Turn to see if her mind changed. She was young, after all. In the meantime, he had the local runnerbeastcrafter -- the one that fed M'sarr's beast -- begin M'sarr's rudimentary education on the subject in case she decided to pursue it.
She learned a great deal, and decided that she would, at thirteen Turns, decide to be the oldest apprentice at Beastcrafthall. The journeyman told her that it was her last Turn that he could reasonably offer her the position. She had thought long and hard, and knew that it was the right decision for herself and her family. Her tutor for the past few Turns had told her she had the capacity to learn from the runnerbeastcrafters at Ruatha, the best in the trade, and be able to bring her family out of poverty.
The time the journeyman came every Turn was during the Gather, and she went into town with him to tell her mentor that she finally decided to follow her dream. Upon entering the festival and before ever reaching the runnerbeastcrafter, a strange face in the crowd approached the journeyman and herself. She originally thought that the conversation was for him, but it turned out that the stranger was talking to her. Their dragon had found her to be a suitable candidate. A dragon.
The thought of being a dragon rider had never crossed M'sarr's mind. In that moment, she was opened up to a whole new world of possibilities she never even dreamed of. Why ride a runnerbeast on the ground when one could ride a dragon in the sky? Her brother did it, and it had to be a lucrative business.
It was one of the few rash decisions in her life. She agreed without contest. Without thought. She climbed onto the dragon and they took off before she ever thought to ask what Weyr the rider was affiliated with. She had foolishly assumed Igen; instead, the dragon dipped between and reappeared above an island that M'sarr was completely unfamiliar with.
It was called Mavros. They needed candidates, and M'sarr happened to fit the profile.
She did not Impress a dragon the first time, but she had been sufficiently awed by the presence of a gold dragon. She knew she had not the personality to control such a creature, but the very sight of Asurath was enough to erase any doubt that M'sarr was a dragon person over a runnerbeast person. Unfortunately, she was never quite a people person and rarely got along with her fellow candidates.
Her social problems only grew worse the more she was around people. So many strangers in one place was overwhelming, and she began to isolate herself. She had no animals to tend to as she had with her runnerbeasts, and instead took to doing many jobs around the Weyr. She found herself to blame for the problems people had, even though it was almost certainly due to the grim atmosphere around Mavros in general, especially after the poisoning.
She was offered to stand at Mirran. She went and, once again, did not Impress. After coming back from that failure, she fervently threw herself into work around the Weyr. At her second Turn there, she realized she was isolating herself from her peers and decided to try to do something about it. She started talking to them more, only to find that her conversation skills were severely underdeveloped. Turns of training runnerbeasts with only limited conversation had not been incredibly kind to her.
As she approached her seventeenth Turn, M'sarr was starting to lose hope that she would ever Impress a dragonet. She walked on the Sands despondent the day Luluth hatched. Her attitude changed completely when the little green approached her. The dragon's skin was such a dark, rich shade of emerald and her wings were so long that their tips almost touched the ground. At first, M'sarr was unconvinced that the creature had chosen her, but had been completely struck by her beauty. Then, it turned out that Luluth had chosen her.
The energetic dragon has proven to be a handful, but M'sarr couldn't have asked for a better companion. All her time with runnerbeasts has helped with interacting with Luluth and keeping her entertained.
