NAME: Akai
RANK: apprentice smith
AGE: 17
GENDER: female
ORIENTATION: bi bi bi
APPEARANCE:
Akai has light brown skin and curly brown hair that she wears past her shoulders, but usually tied out of her face. She generally wears comfortable, no-nonsense clothing, though she's always willing to shell out more marks for higher quality, provided that she can afford it. After all, with her work, she can ruin more items of clothing in a month than she can afford to buy. So Akai has a lot of really nice leather pieces, but not really a separate work/casual wardrobe. Even if she was concerned with style, it would be impossible to afford both. Akai isn't exactly rich in marks.
Akai has a languid, comfortable confidence in herself. She does a lot of slouching, a lot of leaning on walls, sitting so that she takes up as much room as possible. When she's angry, she transcends her relatively short height with her attitude alone, where it is possible to completely forget that a 5'3" apprentice is yelling at you. Mostly, however, you will find Akai with a bored expression on her face, as she suffers through small talk and other uninteresting chatter. If you want her to light up, you have to really engage her.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Akai isn't the most tactful person. She is blunt, not careful with what she says, and honest to a fault. She tends to be very self centered, and thus ignores most general wisdom when approaching conversations. Loud and obnoxious at times, Akai doesn't appear to have an off-switch. Her temper runs as hot as dragonfire when ignited, and she can carry a heck of a grudge. She also can be single-minded and slightly obsessive when something interests her. Sometimes she runs on klah and mania alone which can lead to a very cranky Akai that must be avoided at all costs.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Akai is a wild child. Confident, somewhat cocky, and utterly fearless - Akai has no problem going after what she wants in life, and she's willing to put in 110% effort at all times. She is also clever. Although her singular obsession with flamethrowers and rough and tumble personality can distract from it, she is a promising smith apprentice. She has an undeniable curiosity and delicate, careful fingers. Akai enjoys the act of creation and generally, her first instinct when coming across something or someone that she doesn't understand, is to take it apart piece by piece and examine what makes it tick. That is, metaphorically so in the case of living creatures. Promise.
FAMILY:
Karn - father, 51 turns
Alissa - mother, 48 turns
Kastor - 31 turns
Aarin - 28 turns
Lisander - 25 turns
HISTORY:
Akai is the only girl born to journeyman miner Karn and his wife, Alissa. She is absolutely doted on by her trio of older brothers Kastor, Aarin, and Lisander.
The boys mostly raised her, as their parents marriage had begun to strain. Alissa was always emotionally fragile and her long and abusive relationship with her husband made it hard for her to take care of herself, let alone her children. Karn rarely even slept in the house. Kastor had made it clear his father was no longer allowed anywhere near their mother when he was drunk, which was most nights.
(Aarin and Lisander greatly take after Alissa, but Kastor worries that he will turn out like his father. He worries even more than Akai will. She is wild and loud and fearless and, yes, quick to anger)
Akai spent most of her time doing what she wanted to do because of this lack of guidance and structure. Most of her time was spent outdoors, studying bugs and climbing trees. She was insatiably curious from a young age and got in trouble more than once for being some place that she shouldn't be. But there wasn't too much she couldn't get out of, as her older brothers would show up and threaten anyone who gave her trouble.
Kastor and Aarin started to let her tag along with them to work - safer than leaving her at home, alone - they left her with their boss while they went in the tunnels. The man would let Akai look at his maps and narrate how they identified strands of ore, how they mined it from the ground, and the processes by which the materials they found helped all of Pern to function. That they were the backbone of Pernese life in so many ways.
Akai was 9 when their father left them one night. At 16, Lisander began to work in the mines as well. He had wanted to be a harper when he was little, but they all had to work now, or the family wouldn't survive. It was something that stuck with Akai very strongly. She decided that she loved her siblings, but that she didn't want that for herself.
She had no distaste for miners or what they did, but Akai itched for something more. And so when Aarin befriended a journeyman smith, Akai took her opprotunity to beg and badger the young man for her own apprenticeship. It took some doing, but eventually he either was convinced she had potential or tired of dealing with her.
That's how she wound up leaving her home (and her very emotional brothers) and making her way into the smith craft halls.
Only, she's not really doing what she wants at the moment. Most of her time has been occupied in a long apprenticeship where she sustains the works of journeyman and master smiths by breaking up rock, carrying ore around, and cleaning up equipment. If she is lucky, sometimes she can work in a forge. They let her practice on small things like cups and spoons, sometimes jewelry, and sell them for some pocket marks.
It isn't horribly boring stuff, and Akai is sure once they let her practice more, she could really start enjoying herself. But it isn't... horribly exciting, yet. She thinks wistfully about everything out of reach - like, for example, flamethrowers. Why can't she just skip all this boring stuff and get to the part where they teach her how to make flamethrowers?
Not to mention there are a few smarmy individuals that think because she's a girl, she's somehow less apt at the craft then a boy would be. Akai doesn't pay much mind to the apprentices who giggle this behind their hands, because they can say what they want, but her spoons sell better than theirs so they'll eat their words. But it is dreadfully, stupidly annoying to deal with it with the master crafters. Not all of them, but a few, are less likely to give her attention and sometimes ignore her entirely. Which sucks because they're supposed to be teaching her!
Then, a twist Akai never saw coming.
She wasn't even supposed to be there, that was the thing. A few apprentices were allowed, as a reward for good behavior, to travel to a couple of holds. It wasn't just a vacation. The goal had been to show their best and brightest off to several lord holders, take part in some festivities, and complete a few business transactions. But one of the boys got sick, suddenly, and Akai lobbied to take his place with a rather impressive necklace she had been working on throughout the turn. (It was supposed to have been a gift for Lisander, he liked jewelry, but he would forgive her for seizing the opprotunity) Reluctantly impressed with the careful craftsmanship, she was allowed to travel with the group.
And they were in the Mavros Weryhold when Akai felt a mental brush against her mind, turned around to look face first into the whirling eyes of a curious blue, and suddenly she had something else to consider entirely.
