"Kindness is magic. It's more important to be kind than clever or good looking. I'm not clever or good looking but I'm kind." (Derek, Ricky Gervais)
APPEARANCE:
Liesol has brown eyes and brown hair, and a slightly-too-big-for-her-face nose. She is a tiny little thing, at 5’3”. Liesol always has a bunch of energy, which diverts itself into more creative and artistic things like playing her harp or waving her arms all around her to try and explain things better. She is very jittery and doesn’t tend to sit still for anything. She tends to always be just the wrong foot off, with messy hair and smudges on her cheek, constantly distracted by this-or-that, and not worried enough about her looks to clean up.
Her clothing is always a jumbled mess of colors and patterns that don’t seem to work well together and, because of her habit of staying up late trying to compose songs that she never plays out-loud (for fear of jeering) so all of Liesol’s clothes have stains from where she fell asleep over a project. Liesol hates having anything on her feet and is commonly seen walking around barefoot.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Cautious might be an understatement. Lisoel is outright timid; completely adverse to change, flustered easily, has little to no spine when dealing with folks older than a weyrbrat. While she attempts to be friendly, she is so shy that she’ll blush at the drop of a hat and not be able to speak through it. It is easy for people to take advantage of this well-meaning harper.
Lisoel wants to badly to be liked that she will do almost anything for her ‘friends’—regardless of whether they are acting like her friends or not. She’s also not much of a thinker—she knows what she was taught, like lesson songs and her letters, but she has very little practical knowledge. Natural talent, yes. Creativity, yes. Hard worker, to the point of volunteering herself everywhere at once? Yes. But natural intelligence? Oh no… she’s a little clumsy too and finds herself getting lost in places she should know like the back of her hand, let alone new and frightening places…
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
“Only the gentle are ever really strong.” -James Dean
Lisoel is innocent and kind, loves children, and is a natural performer. She is much more comfortable in front of hundreds if she can escape into her music, than individual one-on-one talking. She enjoys teaching holder children and weyrbrats all sorts of harper tales. She never argues or gets defensive, and she doesn’t seem to have a temper at all. She’s so very easily enthused and willing to work hard.
Although she is very easily frightened by things, this girl never backs down from trying her best to get over her own fears, and has a remarkable ability to bounce back from being hurt or scared. Lisoel’s curiosity leads her into many situations you would not think such a shy soul would find herself in, but she simply cannot let go of interesting thoughts once discovering them. She has an insatiable appetite to understand everything.
FAMILY: Esmee, mother, 57 turns -- Solen, father, 50 turns – plumpikins, feline, 14 turns
HISTORY:
Liesol doesn’t have much of an interesting backstory. She was born to her harper mother Esmee—a master of her craft, a gruff older lady who had not expected a child so late in her life. Her father was Solen, an on-and-off lover of Esmee and a miner. Solen was an aloof sort of man but he visited his daughter when he could and tried to be an affectionate father to her. It didn’t really matter. Esmee was more than enough of a woman to be both parents for Liesol. She was, and still is, a proud woman and very talented. She started teaching Liesol at a young age and, to her pleasure, her daughter inherited many of her mother’s talents.
Liesol continued to please her mother, joining the young chorus at her crafthall as soon as she was old enough. She had a clear tone and showed enough talent, that the other masters were convinced it was worth the time to work with her. Liesol is a high soprano and her best harper talent lies in singing, though her lower ranges suffer a little, and she has to either work with another singer for many of the popular pernese songs, or stick with the few ballads that call for an impressive high voice only.
She also learned lute, which she had less of a knack for, but she did her best and can play quite well though wringing the emotion her Lute Master could is out of her reach. And because she doodled constantly when she was nervous, her mother set her up with an art teacher, who taught her all about the inks and paints available on Pern and how to use them to her advantage. Her personal lute has a beautiful sprawling vine design etched on its surface, which is an example of her talents in that area.
