Gisellaine
NAME: Gisellaine
RANK: Wingrider/Searchrider
AGE IN TURNS: 26
FAMILY:
Mother Layka (46)
Father Gerran (49)
Brother Greym (30)
Sister Karredy (19)
Sister-in-law Nehauka (32)
Nephew Nereym (11)
Nephew Greyston (8)
DRAGON: Green Zedorianth
APPEARANCE: She’s fairly short at five feet and three inches tall, and neither skinny nor particularly curvy, but is clearly toned. Her hair is curly, dark-brown, and reaches the end of her shoulder blades, though it's several inches longer when wet or straightened. After nine Turns of riding, she weighs about 140 pounds due to muscle mass, and has surprised more than a few people who expected someone lighter due to her height. During drills she puts her hair in a bun or a braid, and unless it’s a special occasion she usually keeps it braided for practicality. Her skin is fair and no longer has the acne or blotchiness of a teenager’s, but she does burn if she stays in the sun for too long. There’s a burn scar that covers almost all of her right leg from a wing-drill accident a few Turns ago, which is why she never wears anything shorter than trousers or ankle-length skirts. She has a softly distinguished face with a pointed chin, and deep green eyes.
EDUCATION/SKILLS: Learned basic reading, figures, and writing as a child from a harper, then continued her studies at Igen Weyr. Other than that, she has no formal skills aside from what she needs to know as a dragonrider; basic healing, leatherwork, sewing, etc.
ORIENTATION: Bisexual, leans towards men

BASIC PERSONALITY:
With her constantly nervous expression and fidgeting, Gisellaine gives the impression of a fearful or timid dog; this is why few seem to notice that she's actually rather pretty. She's glad for that, though, since people noticing her would mean people TALKING to her. But even if she's not the life of a Gather, she is pleasant and helpful, and that's fine with her.
-----
*FAULTS: Gisellaine is extremely insecure and timid due to a panic attack in her weyrling training. It’s not the usual cursing-at-self in awkward situations; she gets nervous at anything that could possible involve socializing. She also has a habit of talking to Zedorianth a lot, even during conversations with other people--not because she gets distracted, but because she needs reassurance that whatever she says won’t sound stupid. She is also rather avoidant in general; if she can help it at all and avoid the potential for emotional/physical pain, she just won't do something.
*STRENGTHS: She adapts well to most situations, and is fine doing the quieter jobs like sweep-riding and errand-work that some of the higher colors dislike. One of the few aspects of her personality that didn’t get crowded out by insecurity is her politeness and professional nature. With any friends she manages to make, she’d be much more loyal to them than most. Strangely enough, she’s perfectly fine with how she looks--considering everything else she worries about, she probably wouldn’t be functioning if she worried about that.
FEARS: She’s not a good swimmer and only knows enough to keep afloat (sometimes she even has trouble with that), so she’s terrified of deep water--especially the ocean. She has two rather specific fears; the greatest one is losing Zedorianth because she’s somehow not good enough, and her second-greatest is her intense fear of rejection or ridicule, which she tries to avoid by just not talking to them.
DREAMS: At the moment, she has low-key goals: Stay alive and healthy, and hopefully not die a painful death by Threadscore. She would also like children, but knows since it's a Pass that raising them herself would be out of the question.
*HISTORY: Born and raised on the outskirts of Igen, Gisellaine was a hold girl with a reputation as “the girl you stay away from if you don’t intend on staying friends or committing completely to her.” This had nothing to do with her, really--having a father who’d been breeding guardian and herding canines since before he’d gotten married (Gisellaine had a fondness for them, and was often seen with at least one adult canine diligently keeping watch), most boys had the misguided impression that Gerran would set his canines on them if anyone did wrong by his children--particularly his oldest daughter, what with her being so quiet.
Fortunately, nothing happened aside from the typical childhood antics--until she got Searched by Igen Weyr at fourteen. She quickly began to dream of becoming a queenrider like every other hold girl, and was generally happy at the chance to Impress at all. Unfortunately she was left standing, and despite assurances that she wasn’t a lost cause, she wondered if she was good enough for any dragon. The next Turn’s clutch had thirty-seven eggs (but no queen egg) and she felt sure that at least a green would Impress her, but being left standing again only made her feel worse.
After one of Ista Weyr’s junior queens had a surprisingly large clutch (forty-eight eggs including a queen egg), they found themselves at a shortage of Candidates, and she was transferred to Ista to stand at their Hatching. By then she had turned seventeen, and was at the age where “bad luck” means “something is horribly wrong with you but we don’t want to hurt your feelings and actually SAY it, so let’s pretend you have bad luck.” She stood at the Hatching again with the intention of leaving if she failed to Impress, and as the eggs’ numbers steadily decreased she even started edging away so she’d be able to leave as soon as possible.
One of the last few greens had other plans, and barged right over to her after hatching. {{My name is Zedorianth, and no one will EVER think of scaring you now that I’m here!}} She told Gisellaine joyfully, and it took her a moment to realize that Zedorianth had mistaken her fear of being left standing as being afraid of the green’s larger clutch-mates. By then Zedorianth had wrapped her tail protectively about her legs (though she could only manage one), and a healer had to help her keep balanced as the pair disentangled themselves to go to the Bowl.
While their Impression itself was a positive experience, her long Candidacy and being one of the last Impressed pairs led Gisellaine to overcompensate so much for her perceived “bad start” that she got upset over any mistakes that even remotely involved her. She had a full-blown panic attack one night early in training for a long-forgotten reason; Zedorianth woke up the entire barracks shrieking that Gisellaine couldn’t breathe and wouldn’t tell her what was wrong, at which the Weyrlingmaster immediately sent her to one of the Weyr’s healers. She spent the next four months going to the healers every sevenday, with additional counseling by the Weyrlingmaster, and eventually got over most of her insecurities.
Despite the pair being technically equal to their fellow weyrlings, they were held back to make sure Gisellaine was mentally stable--which actually seems to have turned out worse than if she'd been immature or too young, since people wondered why a perfectly normal greenrider was still in the Weyrling Barracks. They graduated two Turns later, but Gisellaine still (guiltily) resents her reputation in Ista as the greenrider who had a panic attack.
Her fear of losing Zedorianth because she’s “not good enough” persists to this day; it's not nearly as strongly as it was before, but it still leads her to make excuses for whatever mistakes her green made, even if they were legitimate accidents. They were transferred to Mavros Weyr so Gisellaine would be forced to accept Zedorianth’s mistakes as mistakes--NOT life-threatening causes for exile--without a safety net of healers who’d worked closely with her in weyrlinghood.
