My Children hatch. Come greet them.
Krista did a startled jump in surprise, spilling some of the glows that were in her hand to the floor. She had just been in the middle of switching out old for new glows in the common room when the call went out. "Oh no!", she cried out. Krista scrambled to collect the dropped glows. That was Sularenth!, she thought, mind still ringing. Then she finally noticed a low distinct hum that had begun and was gaining in strength. The Hatching, it really is time!
Still scrambling to collect the last of the glowing orbs, S'bols' Nesporth also sounded within her mind. Return to the barracks for your robes and rides, quickly!
"I know, I know", she exclaimed. Stuffing the last of the glows in the basket. She then dashed out of the room. Down the hall and to the barracks she ran, mumbling apologies to those she bumped into along the way. She was glad she had at least been at the Weyr for a couple days or its maze of corridors would have had her completely lost.
The barracks were already crowded with the other Candidates as she scooted herself in to her cot and trunk. Inside and at the top lay her white candidacy robe. It was a simple affair, really. Just two pieces of cloth sewn together. It hadn't taken long to make as Krista was a fairly skilled at sewing. She quickly took off her blue dress and swapped it with the white robe. She tried not to act embarrassed in front of the other girls, this living in a group would take some getting used too.
Finally ready, she joined the line of candidates as they clambered aboard dragons who waited to take them to the Hatching Cavern. A kindly old blue rider motioned her over to his dragon and offered a hand up. Krista smiled gratefully and climbed up.
It was a short flight but it was her first time aboard a dragon. The feeling was exhilarating! The wind of their flight caught at her unbound hair and it took everything in her not to yell in happiness. So this is what it was to ride a dragon! She had never had the opportunity before.
The flight was over all too soon and the blue rider helped her down, wishing her luck. The sands beneath her booted feet were scorching hot as she landed and she thanked the rider before scurrying away from the buffeting of wings as he took off again.
That could be her one day, she muse as she joined the growing group of candidates standing before the eggs. A dragon of her own! That would certainly shut her snarky sister up. The younger girl had been so negative ever since her older sister was Searched and not her.
But what if the dragon had been wrong? Doubt began to assail her. What if she didn't Impress?
Her troubling musings were cut off at the sound of shattering shell. A hatching had forced their way out of their eggy prison feet first and tossed the top like an offending hat. A green! The first to hatch was a green dragon! A murmur of shock flowed through the Stands. A green hatching first was said to be a bad sign. Krista thought this superstition ridiculous but that didn't stop the slight shiver running down her spine as the candidates around her started whispering of ill omens.
The green who had started the was completely oblivious. She flaunted her dazzling checkered patterned wings and pranced around, quite full of herself and in no hurry to Impress. Whoever gets that one will have quite the handful, Krista thought, shaking off her previous feeling.
The next to hatch was a green, brown, and blue, with the green impressing quickly before even coming near her end of the line. Krista sighed, If only….
So lost in the moment was she that when the dazzling young green ran through them she almost landed atop the little one. I need to be more careful. This could get dangerous.
And it didn't take long before the first of the accidents started happening. A startled blue had raced into their group and collided with a girl, it's surprisingly sharp claws ripping into her legs. The little blue got away and Impressed but the girl had to be carried off the sand, legs dripping red. It was a terrifying sight and Krista had to look away or risk being sick.
Time seemed to go both fast and slow then as eggs hatched and Candidates Impressed. Another mauling happened but she was quick to look away, not wanting to see more blood.
Suddenly a hush fell upon the cavern and before them all stood a creature of two worlds. Her upper colors were gold and shone in the light but the lower half of her was also undeniably green. Krista stared in amazement. How is this even possible?
The gold/green hatchling seemed to soak in the attention and pranced for a bit before carefully selecting her lifemate.
Only a few eggs were left now and so many candidates for them. She had been so sure of herself till this point. So sure she would finally prove herself to her parent. So sure she would prove her sister wrong about being left standing. Her heart ached and she had to fight back tears. No. I was Searched for a reason. Even if my dragon is not in this clutch. I will continue to Stand till I'm too old.
Filled with new found determination, Krista stood as tall as she could. Even if that wasn't very high.
Suddenly, the Earthy Egg burst open, the small green within fell out and went sprawling into the sand. It didn’t seem to faze her though as she stumbled back to her feet and slipped and slid across the sands, not appearing terribly coordinated. She tripped again and went sprawling before Krista's feet and looking up at them with whirling eyes, trilling happily at having found her lifemate.
Love. True love filled Krista mind as she looked into those rainbow eyes. Never again would she be alone. Never again would she lack a champion by her side. This small green with her leafy green color and long tail was her whole world and she their's.
Tears of joy flowed down Krista's face as she petted the damp hide.
She then looked up into the crowd, finding her father, mother, and younger sister. With a shaky shout she said,
Her name is Acteuth!
