v'than gifting muze her spitter egg
Muze :: Green Rylath
“Hello, hello?”
She looked up from detangling a fishing net she’d made herself. It was mundane and boring, and yet it was what she wanted to do with her free time. The teenager loved her dragon, loved being a dragon rider, but the ocean still called to her. She enjoyed spending the most of her early mornings in relative silence with Tak’ril as they fished. Muze didn’t always catch anything, but the morning was quiet and beautiful – and it contrasted with the ugly flights against Thread and… other things…
Muze didn’t respond to her brother’s voice, but of course, Rylath did. Hello, hello, hello! Her green responded enthusiastically. Oh, muzemine, it’s your kin! Come in, come in! Bless her heart. Muze tried to hide her wishful thinking that dragons would remember that she was unhappy with her brother. Instead she focused on her adoration for her loving and faithful dragon, smiling gently and looking down at her work.
“Hey Rylath, you’re looking brilliant.” He commented, his eyes looking over the speckled beauty, unaware of his sister who was blushing at the comment. The compliment hadn’t been for her, but her green did seem more brilliant around the time she flew and she had had her flight too recently for Muze’s liking. Of course, T’mang had been… handsome… and kind… but she had left quickly to hide her tears. Really, she was getting used to it – it was part of being a green rider, something to be proud of (she supposed)… but the aftermath was just too embarrassing for her still. And she wished… her cheeks warmed as she thought of the innocent visit of Kekoa. Nothing had happened, but she had wished something had, which was again, stupid. She told herself that over and over again, convincing herself that he did that with all pretty women, but the song he wrote for her was tucked under her pillow nevertheless.
“What do you want.” She mumbled, feeling suddenly more grumpy.
V’than didn’t respond right away, he was watching her work on the net. “Great knot-work.” He commented quietly, amusement in his voice.
She rolled her eyes, he had taught her of course, but she didn’t feel like joking around with him or giving him the satisfaction of any credit. “I did them.” She emphasized the ‘I’ as if he had obviously tried to take credit.
V’than frowned sadly, his spirits dampening – and also a flare of irritation. “Of course you did.” He snapped and sighed, shaking his head, shifting the container of sand that he held.
Muze looked up with narrowed eyes. “What do you want?” She repeated, annunciating each word with irritation. “Come to tell me about your girlfriend? Oh wait. How about you have Tak’ril tell me instead. Wayyy better, don’t you think? Then I can catch you doing… doing…” She got flustered at this point, especially frustrated with a knot that she wasn’t being patient with, she threw her hands up. “Whatever with her!” She made a disgusted noise and stood up and threw her net to the side. She hadn't meant to throw Tak'ril under the bus, but V'than didn't seem too bothered by it, or he didn't say anything about it.
Rylath’s eyes were whirling yellow with worry and concern for her rider. The green just wanted her rider to be happy, she had hoped having her kin there would help with the awkward aftermath of her flight… the green felt confused, trying to sort out the complicated feelings of her rider. Would you like to go flying? She asked, trying desperately to think of something that would remove the pain from her rider with something her rider enjoyed.
Muze was grateful for the suggestion, not bothering with rider straps or gear of any sort and went toward her green purposefully.
“Hey now, that’s not fair.” V’than started, feeling defensive. He fought to beat down his pride. “Okay… I should have told you I… just…” He was following her, only as they got to Rylath did he realize she was about to leave. “Where are you going?”
She whirled on her brother. “I’m no longer stuck! Father would treat me like runner-beast dung and I couldn’t escape, but now I don’t have to deal with anyone who treats me poorly – I –“ And V’than interrupted her quickly, desperately.
“This is for you.” He awkwardly held the container out, as it was heavy with sand.
She hadn’t even realized he had been holding anything and just stared at him in shock. They were both silent, Muze confused and annoyed, V’than awkward and steadfast in his desire to hand it to his sister.
“A…box?” She finally broke the silence.
“What? Oh, no, it’s inside the box… it’s a Spitter egg.”
She had a hard time staying angry, curiosity peeling it away. Still, she folded her arms, lips pursed in an attempt to still look irritated. The tone in her voice gave her away, though. “A spitter?” There were stories of them back at home and it wasn’t until she’d heard of their reality until she had reached Mavros. Her oceanic heart leapt excitedly. A spitter of her own?
V’than tried to hide how pleased he was that he had stopped her, that he had found a way to repair what had happened between them… even if it was just the beginning.
Knowing she wasn’t in the mood for playful banter, he avoided teasing her further, stepping forward and putting the box in her arms (of which she had opened to receive it). It was heavier than she had anticipated, but her strong dragonrider arms held it firm after the first dip. Again, the awkward silence plagued them… V’than didn’t want to say the wrong thing and Muze was resisting letting him in.
“How long… before it hatches?” she mumbled, looking at the box, a finger brushing the rough surface.
“Soon, I’d keep it close, they impress similarly to firelizards… I can help you make a pool for it when it hatches, so it can stay in your weyr, if you want.”
“Fine.” The idea of her ship-building brother helping her construct something for her spitter was also appealing, despite her pride that wouldn’t admit it outloud.
“Alright… well, that’s all I wanted… I’ll catch you at an evening meal this seven-day?”
Muze paused and then shrugged a shoulder, glancing at him, but mostly looking down at her crate. He nodded, feeling cheerful again – unable to hold back his grin. He turned and started to leave and Muze bit her lip as she watched him.
“V’than!” He paused and turned, walking back for a couple paces. “Thanks.” She said and he only smiled back at her, turning back around and out of the weyr to outside.
Does this mean you no longer want to ride? She blinked back at her green, having forgotten she had been about to escape. “For now…” She said, a little absorbed in her new treasure. She took the crate and put it next to her bed, thinking how she’d need to get some dried fish just in case it hatched and caught her unaware.
