BT Month 14 - Mid Spring
Weather: Pleasant and sunny with a light, cool breeze.

D'rew, No'va :: Brown Alduntulath

D’rew had Sabanth call all the weyrlings together, informing their riders to have their riding gear on both themselves and their dragons. It had been a common practice the last several days, getting them used to getting the gear on and off, and hooking themselves in atop their lifemates. It was tedious for them and for D’rew, going around and inspecting everything to ensure they were all doing it right, but it was quite literally a matter of life and death, so it was important. Today, however, all their efforts would pay off, not that he had informed them of that. As they gathered, waiting to have their gear inspected, they probably thought it was just another drill, more practice, and then D’rew would tell them to unstrap and dismount and they would move on to a different lesson.

He did his best not to give it away as he moved around to each of his students, tugging on straps, checking buckles. But after he’d finished each inspection, he didn’t tell them to unstrap and dismount, and after a certain point he was sure most of them must have figured it out from the excited murmuring that started up.

“We’re flying, aren’t we!? Today? Right now? We are, right? D’rew!?”

No’va’s excited call as he walked away from the young brownrider had him chuckling, but he mustered up a more serious tone when he called back, “Wait for your orders, brownrider!” He heard the dramatic groan behind him and hid his laugh behind his hand as he moved on to the next. Tellamuth. When the white was newly hatched, D’rew had had immediate concerns about his ability to carry a rider, but at this point he was slightly larger than K’zar’s green and just as big as D’lon’s. The white’s growth rate still completely baffled him. Unlike his siblings who grew just a bit more each month, Tellamuth grew two feet without fail each month he’d been out of the shell. If he continued at this rate, he’d be just as large as a normal green by the time he was done, but from what D’rew knew of whites, one had never grown that large. All two he had ever heard about in passing had been notably tiny in comparison to even their green sisters, though for all he knew their small size had just been exaggerated.

Satisfied with Joia’s work, he moved on to the next pair, continuing to work his way through until he had seen to the last of them. There were many expectant eyes on him when he finally turned his attention to the class as a whole, “Yes, you’re flying today.” There were excited woops from several in the class, “Your dragon will take off, circle around the lake, and come back to land so the next pair can take their turn. After everyone has had a successful first flight with their dragons, you are all free to fly with your dragons - so long as you don’t do anything reckless - explore the unoccupied weyrs available to you, and pick whichever ones you like for your own for the rest of our stay here. You’ll be properly assigned weyrs once we return, but there’s little reason to assign them while we’re back in time. If there are disputes over who wants which weyr, I’ll settle them as they come up. I recommend weyrs in the middle of the cliffs rather than down toward the beaches or higher toward the height of the cliffs. Tunnelsnakes have been found to be less common in those.” With a quick look around the class, he figured he better choose who went first or there would likely be an argument. “Now then,” he grinned, “No’va! Get Alduntulath in the air!” He was sure the boy would explode of anticipation if he was made to wait much longer.

“Woohoooo!” No’va shouted, “Let’s go, Aldy!”

At last, the brown responded, sharing in his rider’s excitement for this day, even if he did not show it quite as obviously. Alduntulath made his way clear of the rest of the class, spread his wings to ensure he had the room he needed.

“Let’sgolet’sgolet’sgo-”

If you are sure you’re ready, the brown warned.

“Of course I’m ready. I was made for this!” No’va replied aloud, too excited to contain the conversation within his head.

With a huff, Alduntulath leaped, downstroked, and No’va jerked in his seat unexpectedly, instinctively reaching for his straps to cling to as though he was about to fall. I knew you weren’t ready.

“Shells, Aldy. Why didn’t you just tell me to hang on-” No’va broke off as they continued to rise into the sky, the rest of the class growing smaller beneath them as he looked over the brown’s side. He laughed, giddy, as Alduntulath made for the lake. “We’re flying! Wooooooo!” This was even better than the ride he’d gotten on Kenessia’s green. But all too soon Alduntulath was heading back toward where the rest of the class waited. “Aww, c’mon, Aldy. Let’s do another circle! Show me how fast you can go!”

We were instructed to circle once, the brown responded matter-of-factly and made no change to his course, however his tone took on a bit of a mischievous note in his next words, But after everyone has had their turn we will be free to fly as we please.

No’va grinned, “We should see if anyone wants to race.”

The brown rumbled agreement and slowed their descent for their landing, I hope you are better prepared for landing than you were for take off.

No’va gripped the straps and braced himself, teasing, “I hope you’ve gotten better at landing.”

Alduntulath huffed, My landings have been just fine, thank you.

No’va supposed he wouldn’t remember his rough first landing, being that it was two months ago. His landing this time was much better, though a bit rougher than No’va would have liked, jostling him, but at least not tossing him to one side as the take off had. He was sure he was going to be feeling that tomorrow. Alduntulath folded his wings, padding back amongst the class to settle near Tellamuth. No’va grinned over at Joia, “You have to go next. It’s amazing.”

“Well done you two!” D’rew called to the brownpair, glancing over the rest of the class, “Who wants to go next?”

It had been exciting, at first, watching Tucseth learn to control himself in flight. He proved quickly to have a blue's natural agility, and he was all too keen on challenging other blues and greens to friendly- and sometimes not-so-friendly- competitions of maneuverability in flight. He'd throw a tantrum if he lost, wailing about unfairness and cheating, and grumbling for hours while avoiding whoever it was who had bested him. Then a few days would pass, and he would forget, and it would happen all over again. He was nearly as unbearable if he won, gloating endlessly to anyone who would listen.

But Vitra was quickly tiring of watching him, of heeding the order to stay off his back. She might have ignored it, but Sabanth seemed to be always watching over the weyrling dragons, and it was too dangerous to fly at night, when Tucseth was blinded by darkness. So she waited, fighting down the surge of impatience each time she secured the straps around her blue's body, checking that the buckles were done right and wishing she dared to just climb up and go. Tucseth didn't help; he was all for beating out the rest of their classmates in taking their first flight together.

Today she had expected more of the same; Tucseth's body was sturdy beneath hers and she leaned forward, rubbing gently at his neck as D'rew paused at her side, inspecting her job on the straps. He carried on after giving a nod, but this wasn't anything new and she merely gave a nod back.

But when he announced that they were taking their first flights, finally, she felt suddenly flooded with excitement- more than just the sudden thrill at the news. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to calm herself; her heart was beating too quickly and a sudden headache throbbed at her temples. She barely felt Tucseth's hum, knew he was looking at her without opening her eyes, felt his worry, and confusion. She didn't understand- she'd been fine just two minutes ago, and now she could hardly breathe. Was something wrong with her?

The blue shifted, his gaze following Alduntulath and No'va as they came in to land. He wanted to go next, not Tellamuth, but Vitra was still clutching her head, not in any shape to participate or even enjoy this, and despite the strength of his desire, Tucseth backed out of the crowd of weyrlings and turned his head to nuzzle his rider gently.

Joia and White Tellamuth

Joia didn’t hide the smile, laughing softly and shaking her head as N’ova gave what to her seemed a very over-dramatic groan from the back of his Brown. D’rew’s voice missed the gruff, rude snarl that she’d been prepared for when she impressed; but then, she’d been planning to face a much less understanding Weyrlingmaster to be honest about it. IF she had planned to be dealing with one at all.

Stop that. The voice was instantly there, shoving at the self-doubt before it could worm its way too deep into her thoughts. Joia’s smile softened, the girl shifting to run her hand over the pearly, pale neck arched in front of her. ‘Sorry. Wasn’t dwelling, promise.’ Which was the truth! She knew why Tell had been so quick to nip the comment, but she really hadn’t planned to wander that dark path. That was past, like a shadow of a lingering memory, of a person she didn’t really know anymore.

The dragon shifted under her, and Joia looked over to nod at D’rew as his hands reached for Tellamuth’s gear. Did you check the breast strap? ‘I did. Being tugged off once was embarrassing enough.’ At least you didn’t have far to fall? The humor was there, and she resisted the urge to slap the dragon on the shoulder; instead, she said in her seat, watching their teacher tug and push at the riding straps and gear to make sure she had gotten them sorted proper this time. She was sure he tugged the chest strap twice…. But after a moment, D’rew stepped away and nodded.

Joia beamed. She wanted, like the others, for the orders to dismount. When it didn’t come, she found herself shifting move in the straps, moving her knees to better rest against Tell’s hide. ‘Do you think N’ova is right?’ Possibly. There is no reason not to, after all. The class is all large enough to carry their partners, including Lepsuth. And myself of course. Joia wasn’t going to deny the idea of finally being in the air, on her own Dragon, was something that she’d been dwelling on since Tell took his first flight months ago.

“No’va! Get Alduntulath in the air!” Joia’s heart slammed up into her throat, her head swinging around to look at her friend practically beaming on his Brown. She gave a quick whooping cheer, but quickly quieted because she didn’t want to get frowned at (or left out). Watching No'va and Alduntulath launch off the ground, really leaving the ground and rising into the air was enjoy to make her heart tighten up, her stomach flipping several times as the pair did their flight and circled back to rejoin them.

As happy as she was to see the pair fly, she was happier when the pair of goofballs found their way back to the ground safely. N’ova’s words reached her just as D’rew was calling for the next to go – Tellamuth beat her to the thought, shaking himself to settle the rest of the gear, and Joia with it. ‘You sure?’ Joia was more than willing to take the next flight but left the final call to the dragon under her. Definitely. Perhaps this will get D’rew to stop looking at me so oddly. “We’ll go next, if that's alright, sir.”

Joia beamed a smile at D’rew, can almost see the look move threw the man’s eyes. He’s doing it now. ‘Shush. Let’s do this.’ The White chuckled. As you wish. Joia grabbed the straps in front of her and leaned a little over as the White opened his wings and crouched. When Tellamuth pushed off, launching them into the air, there was a split second Joia was absolutely positive she’d left her stomach on the grass below them. She glanced down, just a moment, as the pair rose into the sky to do their ‘required’ circling pass. “This…” She didn’t have the words for it.

She had to resist the urge to toss her arms out to the sides, just let the wind whip past her as Tellamuth put on a little speed, gracefully banking around the planned course with what seemed like very little effort. Why not do it? ‘Pretty sure for first flights, I am supposed to keep my hands on the straps.’ Tell snorted softly in her mind, weaving around to line back up to return to the others. Next time then? He did say we are free to fly after this as long it’s not reckless. ‘Is hands free flying reckless?’ Not with me, it isn’t.

The whole moment came to an end entirely too soon for Joia as Tellamuth dropped down slowly, his feet finding the ground without too much stumbling. She flashed a grin at D’rew, feeling very proud the small, untried pair had down so well before signaling Tellamuth to move out of the path for the others, and rejoining N’ova and Aldy in the process. ‘How are you feeling? Any strain?’ Tellamuth turned to stand where Joia could take with her friend easily. Not that I feel now? It was a short flight, and you aren’t that heavy, Joia. We’ll try longer later, see what the limit is. Joia smiled. ‘Sounds like a plan.’

Joia turned her attention to N’ova, the grin plastered over her lips. “So, we are picking high weyrs right? You know, ones we have to fly to?”

Weyrling V'than :: Brown Saruth

Becoming a dragon rider had been surreal in the beginning, awkward for his boat making hands to shift into new territory. Now after many months of caring for Saruth, he couldn’t imagine not being a dragon rider. Sure, when he stood on the beach or a salty breeze came his way, the vivid memories of his past would trigger nostalgia. Do you miss it much? Saruth would ask him many times when his mind would wander, and V’than would smile, pat his forgetful dragon and tell him that he didn’t, only because he found that simpler answers were easier for Saruth to understand. He had made many mistakes in trying to explain his complicated human feelings, how he could miss being a boat-man, but at the same time have Saruth take up that part in his heart.

Now he sat on top of his large dragon, already almost twice the size as some of the greens, which did not include Rylath who seemed to be one of the larger greens. Muze had made sure to be nearer V’than and V’than was glad that she hadn’t been too embarrassed by having her older brother impress to the same clutch. This had been better than he had anticipated, being able to look after her… though he knew she really didn’t need being looked after, he had to keep reminding himself that.

He was distracted in thought as D’rew came by to check his straps and then watched as he checked Muze and Rylath’s straps that he hadn’t noticed that he hadn’t been asked to dismount. He blinked from atop his dragon, down at Muze as her brown eyes rose to meet his. Her expression woke him up, with excitement brimming behind her gaze and slight confusion – and her thoughts were obviously exciting Rylath. That’s when he heard No’va’s excited voice call out what Muze had been obviously been wondering.

V’than grinned and shrugged, but his stomach was squirming. It was one thing to ‘see’ and ‘experience’ through his dragon from the safety of the ground, it was even different riding alone instead of being a passenger… but he knew the ocean, not the air. The two were rivals and he often was reminded of the way a storm’s wind would rip at a boat’s sails. Part of being on the ocean was to learn how to maneuver through wind… but on the ocean, not in the wind. I will be your ocean. Saruth’s calm tone tried to quiet V’thans nerves that were hidden behind his masked smile. ‘I think you’re more like a boat, in that analogy Saruth.’ Saruth thought about it for a moment and mentally shrugged. Either way, I stand between you and the wind. ‘True.’ He thought and sighed softly. They had been learning how to fly and help guide the dragon – and a dragon’s wings were a lot like sails… And then their thoughts were confirmed as D’rew started to talk. He exchanged another grin with Muze, she was more of an open book – he could tell she was far more excited than he to leave the ground.

Weyrling Muze :: Green Rylath

She let out a whoop! as No’va and Alduntulath left the ground. She side glanced over to Joia who had been equally as excited for her friend. She grinned and turned to watch the first flight between rider and dragon of their clutch. “I want to go soon!” She announced, glancing over at her brother who seemed half distracted in his thoughts. He did glance at her with an encouraging smile, “do it!” he told her. She wondered if there was reservation in his voice, but he didn’t let on to it.

“What do you think Rylath?” Tellamuth had stepped forward with Joia and she let out an encouraging whoop for her as well. Oh yes! Let’s! If it’s our turn, yes? “There’s no line, we just gotta get in front!” She urged her dragon mentally to go forward and Rylath eagerly obeyed the command. Muze had found that Rylath was so completely trusting that she never hesitated when it came to a command…almost to a fault. Muze had to be very careful with her commands in clarity and preciseness, or her dragon would succeed in carrying out a faulty order.

Joia came back and Muze grinned at her and gave her a thumbs up before urging Rylath on. “We’re next!” She announced and she hurried a command to her green. She knew that if she overthought it, she’d get caught up in insecurities. Her dragon didn’t need that sort of feedback. With a couple of bounds, Rylath pushed into the air with her legs and wings. Muze gasped at the impact of momentum and air and realized she had rushed into the flight a little hastily. She gripped the straps and pulled herself forward, apologizing to Rylath as they finally came to a balance.

‘This is amazing!’ She thought, her chest was rising and falling more quickly with the difficulty breathing and the adrenalin pumping through her. Rylath made a few gentle sways in the sky, showing off a little to her rider, wanting to impress her. ‘Alright, around the lake and back.’ For a moment Muze felt disappointment and it took her a moment to realize it was Rylath’s feelings that she had glimpsed before they were tucked away from her. It had worried Muze when she realized that Rylath hid many of her negative feelings. ‘Don’t worry, after this we’ll get to fly and practice lots!’ This seemed to lighten her dragon’s feelings, because she sped up a tad. ‘Great, let’s slow a little for the landing now…’ And obediently the dragon slowed and they landed.

Muze understood how Rylath had felt, she wanted to stay in the sky, but the thrill had been amazing. She’d get back into the air as soon as possible. “Vavi! You gotta try that!” She called as Rylath nearly pranced with pride toward the brown and her brother.

Weyrling V'than :: Brown Saruth

They will be okay. Saruth softly suggested, his long neck bending to look back at the rider on his back. V’than patted his shoulder. “I know.” He breathed quietly. Then he quietly repeated to himself that she would be okay. Perhaps he was a tad over protective, but he knew Muze could be impulsive, what if she did or said something and he wasn’t there to stop or correct the situation? Then she’d learn. He sighed softly, rubbing his neck and kept his eyes stead on the speckled dragon as it got smaller and then returned.

The moment she landed her let out a soft breath, almost like he’d been holding it the whole time. His sister’s voice bounded back to him and he grinned, putting a hand up in compliance and asking Saruth to go on. He had stopped asking Saruth what he wanted, at least not as often as he had used to. Saruth was always indifferent or compliant to whatever he wanted to do. “Alright, let’s go Saruth.”

They were in the air before he knew it. He had been holding the straps tightly with clenched fists, so he had been ready for the jolt of rising. V’than had not been so hasty as his sister, but saw the danger in waiting too long in getting Saruth off the ground. V’than controlled his breathing as they went, feeling his stomach drop as he looked down at the space between him and the ground. It was awfully different than doing this from the ground… Don’t look down, look in front. He blinked and turned forward, but was distracted by the way Saruth maneuvered in the wind, membrane taut in the wind, not quite as pliable as a sail, but his dragon shifted instinctually and flapped when needed in flight. I am not a boat. The dragon complained plainly, there was no whine in his voice, but perhaps slight confusion of why his rider wasn’t enjoying the ride.

‘I am enjoying this!’ He said, and it was true, as long as he didn’t look down, he was fine. It was just… different. ‘We’ll get lots of practice after this lesson too.’ Saruth seemed pleased with this as he circled around the lake to return. They landed, and it was over, and he tried to hide the relief he felt from his dragon, replacing it with pride and gratitude. ‘You’re amazing Saruth!’ And they returned to their spot next to Rylath, listening to Muze go on and on about her ride. He grinned and chuckled at her enthusiasm, it was what he needed in that moment.

E'san and Brown Norioth

I think we should dye these riding straps. E’san resisted the urge to roll his eyes, shifting his seat on Norioth’s back. ‘And why do you say that?’ They are boring. They don’t stand out; If we want to look our best, they should be… I don’t know, flashier or something. Perhaps some silver accenting? The young Brown shifted, moving his wings slightly as D’rew moved among them to check each weyrling pair’s gear. ‘They aren’t made for fashion, you vain creature. There are functional; something to keep me on your back when we are flying and fighting Thread.’ Norioth snorted. Why can’t they be both? Fashionable and functional?

D’rew’s arrival at their side, at least for the moment, quieted the conversation. Norioth shifted and straightened, standing like a speckled statue as the senior rider ran his hands over the straps and gear, tugging on them to make sure E’san had buckled them all properly. His own stomach flipped a little, nervous to have an error pointed out, but thankfully all he got was a nod from the man, and D’rew moved on. So, back to the topic. Why can’t they be flashy and still work? I mean, if we are to look our best – since we are the best, of course – why should we wear something so drab? E’san heaved a sigh, and then leaned forward to pat the dragon’s neck.

‘There is no shiny metal to spare on your gear here, Nori. Maybe when we get back to our original time, we can look into it?’ Did he plan to? Not really, but the offer seemed at least to get the subject off the table for the moment as Norioth rumbled under him. I see your point. Oh fine, I’ll just have to make sure I make us look fabulous until then. ‘..Wonderful.’ E’san hung his head, silently wishing for the strength to survive his Dragon’s future adventures in the aim of looking ‘fabulous.’ You worry too much. ‘So you keep telling me.’

N’ova’s voice rose over the others, and you could almost feel the ripple run through the class. Flying? Really? D’rew scolded the other Brownrider, but he didn’t tell him he was wrong. E’san’s pulse jumped. Would they be flying today?! Norioth shifted under him, feeling his rider’s eager energy, and shifted his wings open and closed to stretch them a bit. At least would make all this standing around worth it. Not that I don’t like some of the surroundings… E’san felt the Brown’s attention starting to drift toward the side; he turned his heel and poked the dragon in the ribs. ‘Focus.’ Ouch! Don’t do that. ‘Then pay attention.’ I can multitask, Thank-you-very-much. Norioth responded sulkily.

And remained silent until D’rew finished his walkthrough of the class – and ordered N’ova into the air. Yes! They were flying! E’san shifted in his seat, settling himself more upright on his Brown’s shoulders. Yes, sit up straight, you look better that way. ‘Thank you, Norioth.’ Even the Brown’s attempts to use him to lure more feminine attention to the pair couldn’t dampen E’san’s spirits. They watched N’ova go first, then Joia and her White. E’san was actually almost as eager to see Tellamuth in the air as he was to fly himself – white dragons were something he’d only heard harper’s tales about, and until the dragon left the ground, E’san wasn’t even sure that he would have been able to carry his rider.

What a silly thing to say. Of course he could carry her! Norioth seemed genuinely displeased with E’san’s harsh judgment of their white clutch mate. ‘Apologies.’ Accepted. Oh, look, Rylath and hers are going now. Of course a female in the air would get his attention; Norioth shifted a few steps, watching the Green and her rider lift off and rise into the sky over them. You really should try to get to know her better. I can help you know? ‘Know her better? I talk to her in the barracks all the time, I’ll have you know.’ Not all the time, don’t lie. But it’s a starting point. You know, if you walked back from the bath without your shirt on- ‘Do not start that again.’

You are impossible. I’m just trying to help. Norioth groaned at him as Rylath and her rider touched back down. Very good, Rylath. You looked wonderful up there. ‘Oh man, just stop it, you are pathetic.’ I am not, I am paying her a compliment. Perhaps it’s something YOU should try unless you want to be a sour old man for the rest of your life. V’than and Saruth went next completing the same pattern the others had before him before returning to the ground. As Saruth touched down, Norioth shifted and stepped forward, dipping his head to D’rew before moving to take his turn.

Do hold on. Was about all the warning E’san had before Norioth launched the pair into their air. ‘Flames, Norioth! A bit more warning next time?!’ I did warn you. Came the snipped response. E’san shifted his grip on the straps, leaning over the Brown’s shoulders as Norioth put on a bit of speed to do his circle around the Lake. ‘This is great!’ Norioth rumbled, tilting a wing to bank around. I could do something more flashy, you know. This is the same thing I do every time he has us fly. ‘But this is the first time for me. No flashy, I don’t want to get us grounded.’ But- ‘IF we get grounded, you can’t fly period.’ The Brown seemed to weight the options. I suppose you are right. Being grounded would mean I would have to walk everywhere, and it’s hard to show off my skills when I am stuck on foot. E’san grinned. ‘Glad you see it my way for once.’

The flight was over all too soon, Norioth dropping back to the ground to join the others. He stumbled a bit on the touchdown, but in his own way, he covered it up to look like he’d meant to do that. ‘You okay?’ Of course. Who would have thought your small weight would throw off my balance. ‘Hey!’ What? It’s honest, you know. We need to do this more so that I can get used to it. More flying? E’san could agree to that. Good, the voice was smug in his thoughts, that sly tone coming back. Now, let's talk about your hair... E’san’s hand came up, fingers pushing back through the flight blown, dark brown strands. ‘What about my hair?’

Siorreya was starting to feel more human. Having Mimsy and Ama play together, and sleep together, actually meant more sleep for Sio too. It was a win win situation. Even if the blond had more dragon and firelizard to oil and her hands were rubbed raw, at least she didn’t feel like she was going to fall asleep with her eyes open. They were still late, but not for lack of energy. More like because of all the energy. Ama had been so excited she had had a hard time staying still for Sio to get the riding gear on.

There goes Tellamuth. That could have been us if we had been on time!

“Well excuse me missy, you were the one that couldn’t hold still long enough to get you strapped in correctly.”

Mimsy, sitting on the neck ridges of the small green dragon, turned an accusatory and amused rumble on the green dragon, as if in full agreement.

Yes, yes, I know, I know.

Now Siorreya could feel the wheels turning in Ama’s head as she looked at all her siblings packed in one small space, excitedly awaiting flight. Sio rolled her eyes, and sent a mental, ‘don’t even think about it.’ Sio caught sight of Maz and waved, bumping the green dragon’s foreleg to direct her in their path. She supposed she should be mounted, but she wanted to dance the nerves and excitement out.

Amagetith seemed to brighten at the sight of Maz’ru mounted on Quilath, and took the lead getting to them.

“Hey Maz, did we miss anything good?” At this point Rylath and Muze were landing daintily, and a brown was stepping up to launch with a large man atop. Siorreya, in denial that she was nervous, fiddled with Ama’s riding gear, as if checking it all over again.

She could see Mimsy and Amagetith looking at each other as if in deep conversation but ignored them. They were up to something, but Sio could rarely get them to stop their antics anyway. Suddenly Mimsy was in the air, flying all around Quilath’s head, chirping at him, and Ama had backed up and was doing something to the straps of Maz’s riding gear. Getting an idea that this something would be really funny, Sio decided to help.

She got in front of Quilath and started waving her hands, “Mimsy, stop that right now, leave poor Quil alone!” Suddenly Amagetith was back, side by side with Quilath, looking as innocent as ever.

Yes Mimsy, stop that right now. She joined in half-heartedly, a wicked gleam to the blue whirling eyes. Mimsy obeyed at once, landing once again neatly on Amagetith’s neck ridges, looking very proud. Sio tsked a few times, and mounted up on her small green, an easy enough mount even for her small 5’1”.

“Sorry about that Maz, Quil. I don’t know what-“ and before she could finish her sentence, Amagetith shook her wings, just barely brushing them over the straps holding the riding gear, and consequently Maz’ru, in place. Off came the saddle, just as Ama had devised.

N’yx ~ Blue Nimocith

Nimocith couldn’t hide when she was mounted up, so she was really liking the view from up here. Not that he could hide behind her, or between her legs anymore anyway. He was getting big, though he had short legs that made him appear small for a half-grown blue. And he wasn’t getting any less shy. He didn’t say anything to any of his siblings, just kept his head down, and slowly pushed his way to the front. If he didn’t come to close to anyone, he inched closer to the front. The one bad thing about being mounted up on a twenty foot something blue dragon, was she was inhibited from conversing with people.

You know you could say hi to some of your siblings.

Why? I am watching them as they launch and land. I want to make sure to get this right. I don’t want to hurt you on accident.

You couldn’t hurt me.

Better to be extra prepared. Besides, I want to go after Norioth.

Not that she was much of a people person but having a bonded that enjoyed no other company than herself, really restricted any communication with anyone. She watched Rylath and Muze land, and watched the green rider’s brother take to the skies next. They were behind E’san and Norioth, and heard the cheeky compliment Norioth handed out to Rylath and Muze, and it made N’yx giggle. She found E’san to be handsome but didn’t wish to shout at him to start a conversation, really not the best conversation starter. Plus, she was sure he already had someone special. Someone with that figure and smile had to be taken. She found herself daydreaming of his smile being turned on her, a casual conversation playing out-

Will you focus?

Well, if you are going to keep me isolated, you should be prepared for my mind to wander. Especially when there are handsome men afoot.

Norioth and E’san were coming around the bend, she hadn’t even noticed them taking off. She nodded to D’rew, signaling they wished to go next, and got the nod of approval. After Norioth landed and was out of the way, Nimocith moved forward. He didn’t take off right away, and N’yx felt his hesitation.

It’s okay, we got this. You are amazing, and one of the better fliers.

Bolstered by her encouragement, Nimocith crouched and then launched. N’yx hadn’t ridden many dragons, less times than the fingers on one hand in fact, and so she wasn’t quite prepared. She felt her neck snap back, and she held tightly to the leather straps, but once in the air, it was smooth sailing. The wind in her hair, Nimocith under her, and freedom. It felt nice. He swayed gently, almost in apology for the rough start.

This is the life. Yes, yes it is. You are amazing Nimo. She felt the pride that stemmed from the compliment.

They curved around the lake, gliding most of the way, and then there was the end, and it came too soon. The landing was much smoother, and they got out of the way for the next pair to fly.

Now we can fly whenever we want to. Together. We won’t have to wait in a crowd or wait on others. It will just be the two of us.

N’yx smiled, and patted her bonded’s neck, silently agreeing.

Weyrlingmaster D’rew

Watching each pair take off and scrutinizing them as they made their rounds to ensure they didn’t try anything foolish, D’rew was quite pleased at how the lesson was going thus far. No mishaps to speak of. Tellamuth’s flight went just fine, and D’rew supposed it was good Joia wasn’t a large girl. Which had him frowning as he glanced over at Lepsuth. The green was just a tad smaller than the white, and her rider was a deal larger than Joia. He eyed the greenpair for a moment and sighed, walking over to them, “K’zar… I’m afraid I won’t have you flying today. I’m concerned about Lepsuth’s ability to carry your weight in the air.” He studied the green a moment longer, considering her growth rate, “She ought to be big enough by next month. Don’t try riding her until then.” He gave the boy a wan smile, “You’ll join the rest of the class in no time, just be patient, for your dragon’s sake. At least you’ll have the barracks to yourself in the mean time. You’re both free to go for the day if you’d like.” He didn’t want to make him stay and watch if it would be like rubbing his nose in the fact that he wouldn’t be flying himself today, “If you’d like to talk about it after the lesson, come find me. I need to keep an eye on the others at the moment.”

He hoped he didn’t sound too dismissive of the young man, seeing as being held back from the rest of the class was likely to be quite a big let down, but he unfortunately wasn’t able to devote proper attention to the pair right then if K’zar had concerns or wanted to argue his case. He cast a glance over the rest of the class, sure those that had already taken their turns were eager to be off to find their weyrs, their first actually private living space since coming to Mavros, and for some of them perhaps the first ever. Families with many children generally meant shared sleeping quarters. But he only wanted one each in the air just now, so those taking their first flights wouldn’t get distracted. Excitement and nerves went hand in hand all too often. The circuit was a simple flight but even the simplest things could go wrong when you were trying them for the first time. In his survey he was surprised to see Tucseth at the back of the group. The blue was always so eager, only slightly more so than his rider, it seemed.

Parting from K’zar, he worked his way toward the bluepair, taking a quick look at the progress the others were making. Sabanth was watching them as well, so it wasn’t like he would miss anything by looking away. Stopping at the young blue’s side, he frowned up at Vitra, who seemed to be in some pain, “Vitra, what’s wrong? Are you ill? Should I call a healer for you?” It didn’t look much like she was in any state to be flying.

No’va :: Brown Alduntulath

No’va cheered as Joia claimed the second turn to fly, watching with a wide grin as Tellamuth lifted into the air. He couldn’t help but laugh. Some in the class had done a lot of muttering about whether Tell would even be able to carry a rider, after he’d hatched so small, but he was just as big as the smaller greens at this point, and he seemed to be carrying Joia just fine as they made their circle around the lake. The grin hadn’t left his face by the time their friends joined them on land again and Joia posed her question to him, looking as elated as he was by the experience.

“You bet. We better be ready to get going so we can find the best weyrs to claim once everyone’s had their turn. We gotta find good once right next to each other… oh or maybe they should be really far away so then we can practice flying back and forth to see each other a lot!” His grin somehow widened at that clever idea. Not that they really needed any excuse to fly after this. D’rew had said they were free to do so, so long as they weren’t reckless. Alduntulath offered pleased words to his white brother, Well done, Tellamuth. No one should have reason to doubt your abilities any longer.

No'va looked around quickly, expecting to see Vitra and Tucseth jockeying for a chance to fly next, and his grin faltered when he spotted his friend toward the back instead. He couldn’t quite tell what she and her blue were doing, but they didn’t look at all eager to fly. Before he could decide just what he wanted to do about it, another dragon was taking off and he was distracted watching their classmates continue to take their first flights. When he next glanced back to check on her again, he saw D’rew talking to her and his lips tugged into a slight frown. Aldy, can you ask Tucseth what’s wrong?

Alduntulath followed his rider’s gaze and rumbled in consideration and agreement, Tucseth, is something wrong with yours? Is there any way we can assist?

Maz’ru :: Blue Quilath

‘You hear that? We may fly together today!’

Yes, that is exciting.

‘You don’t sound excited.’

Just because I can maintain myself, unlike some of my siblings, doesn’t mean I am not able to feel what they feel.

‘It begs the question.’

He felt his dragon ‘hmph’ under him. Maz’ru had to admit that his dragon’s eyes were whirling similar to his siblings who were now anticipating flying. And where was Sio? Of all the lessons to miss or be late to, this was one of the worse. He glanced around as dragons started to take off and saw Sio and Ama coming as late as ever. It was already confirmed that they would fly and soon dragons were taking off with their riders. His feet tingled in anticipation. He was already off the ground on Quilath's back, but the idea of his dragon’s feet leaving the ground is what fueled adrenalin. We are ready. Quilath reached into Maz, as if to comfort him. ‘Oh no, I know it – this is actually excitement, not nerves.’ They seem awfully similar. He rolled his eyes as Ama and Sio sidled up next to him and Quilath, he shook his head slightly in mock disappointment as she asked if they had missed anything.

“Well, besides it being the first day riding… no.” He chuckled and shook his head, unbelieving. “I suppose you have a good excuse for being late?”He asked, just as Mimsy started her antics around Quilath. Quilath’s eyes started to whirl with slight confusion. This pretend dragon is being awfully distracting. Cannot Siorreya control her pet, like you? Maz looked over at Sio in suspicion who was in front of Quilath, knowing his friend well, but was too distracted to notice her green at Quilath’s side. ‘I told Mimic to stay at home, but that doesn’t mean she had obeyed me. I actually highly doubt it.’ He retorted with a sigh as Quilath continued to try and avoid Mimsy’s close encounter.

“Sio, you better get on Ama, so you can get your straps checked.” Amagetith. ‘What?’ Her name. It’s Amagetith. Maz’ru groaned outwardly just as Sio was able to calm down her flit. Then suddenly his world was rotating as his riding gear slipped and then fell off Quilath. He landed with a soft thud in the moist sod and sat there disorientated for a moment before realizing what had happened. Oh my, my – you did not put on my riding gear properly! Can you imagine if we had flown with that? ‘Quilath… Quilath!’ He had to repeat the dragon’s name multiple times to calm and get the blue’s attention. ‘It was one of Ama – Amagetith’s tricks. The gear was fine before that trio showed up.’ He chuckled as he undid the gear around his waist and flopped the now soiled gear on top of Quilath. This means a bath after flying. ‘Yes, for us and the gear.’ Why don’t you make them clean it? He just grinned as he peaked over at Sio shaking his head, a wicked grin on his face. ‘Or we could get them back?’ …Or we could make them clean it. He shook his head again as he quickly but surely strapped the gear back onto his sky blue dragon.

Once mounted he finally spoke as he secured himself. “As I was saying… you should get your own gear fastened and on that mischievous dragon of yours if you ever want to lift off the ground!” He glanced over at D’rew and luckily he had been distracted with other weyrlings to notice the happenings in their corner of the group. “Not that you’re any better than your dragon.” He teased, assuming well that Sio had been in on the prank.

Should we get our gear checked before we fly? ‘Naw, I did it right the first time, didn’t I?’ The blue shifted uneasily. “Now, you late-comers can watch the pros how it’s done!” He winked at them and urged Quilath to the front. Are you ready? ‘Yes, yes – just go!’ Quilath waited a moment, then let his rider know that he was about to lift off. Maz’ru had just enough time to roll his eyes at the over preparedness of his dragon when suddenly Quilath jerked forward in a short run before jumping off into the air. You said you were ready. ‘I was…’ Quilath rumbled doubt as he flapped higher into the sky and caught a current that carried them toward the lake.

‘Wow.’ Quilath didn’t respond, but Maz’ru could feel his bonded’s pride swell as he took a swoop into a turn to go around the lake and make their way back. It really was something, to fly. If their job didn't have to do with fighting flesh eating creatures that fell from the sky as they flew… well, flight would have probably have seemed more blissful in that moment. He pushed the thought away, not wanting Quilath to catch drift of the negativity or thought of thread. Instead he focused on the way air pushed past him and on Quilath’s thoughts and his awareness of the air currents.

When they landed they headed back to Sio and Ama to see if they had finished getting ready, or if Mimsy had continued to distract them.

Muze :: Green Rylath

Thank you Norioth! Muze startled at the conversation, her eyes turning to the large brown and his handsome rider who seemed like he may be a bit disdained by the comment of his dragon. She couldn’t really tell, because she looked away as soon as she had seen where the conversation had been coming from. Were her cheeks burning or was she flushed from the flight? ‘Uhm, Rylath, can we go wait for V’than and Saruth over there?’ She directed her dragon who happily complied to further in the back of the group, where she’d take less notice from others.

Being short – Muze was used to being ignored. She was fine looking – but nothing that ever caught the attention of a man, unless it was just because she was one of the only girls around the dock working back at home. Now though, she wasn’t just a dragon rider, but her dragon was the opposite of her stature – larger, almost as big as a blue. Greens blended easily, but her speckled green took more of a limelight, especially with her energy.

Did I do something wrong, Muzemine? She was having a hard time reading her feelings of embarrassment and where they were coming from. ‘Oh no, you never do anything wrong Rylath, never mind me. I just…’ She paused, realizing she didn’t know why she was feeling the way she had. The dragon had only complimented them, it really had been no big deal. ‘You make me better, that’s all. I’m not quite used to it.’ Rylath seemed pleased enough with this and they went on watching Saruth in the air until they touched back and rejoined with them.

“See, I told you it was amazing! I remember when the dragon’s first took off – it was different though, everything seemed… brighter!” And she went on chattering on to her brother, forgetting the feelings she had felt a moment prior.

K'zar of Green Lepsuth

As per usual when the group gathered, Lepsuth had curled herself into as small a ball as possible, nose pressed tight against her rider's leg and eyes clamped shut. She didn't look to see how any of the others were doing- not that she didn't care, but it didn't affect her or her rider so there was no reason to look. Throughout the other flights K'zar had been trying to keep her calm, wondering how much time it would take to convince her to actually fly with him. It'd been hard enough getting her to go alone.

D'rew's approach, though, wasn't to tell him to take his turn as K'zar had thought. He glanced down at the green, back at D'rew, and then shrugged, crossing his arms. "Okay. Whatever." He didn't know what the bluerider was talking about- sure, Lepsuth was a bit small... okay, more than a little, considering her head barely reached his shoulder- but he wasn't any happier about being singled out to be told he couldn't fly. Even if he'd only been anticipating it for a short time, it was still a blow.

We will be safe, Lepsuth piped up, though she never moved- and it was really hard to hang on to his irritation when she sounded so relieved. He sighed, turned, and settled on the ground, where Lepsuth quickly pressed her head against his chest, humming.


Vitra of Blue Tucseth

Hands over her temples, eyes closed, the girl hadn't been aware of D'rew coming over until he was at her side speaking- she'd felt his concern, but it was still nothing compared to the overwhelming excitement and now the thrill that had come from flying for the first time. She opened her eyes to blink at him, but only for a moment. Shaking her head, she managed a few words. "I don't know- it's so much. I don't know what it is."

How did she explain that she felt so excited that her heart was pounding? She'd never felt like this before, not since Tucseth's hatching, and she didn't know how to explain something she didn't understand herself. "I don't think I can fly. But I want to!" Her voice caught, sudden frustration welling up. What was wrong with her, and why now?

Turning his head toward his brown brother, Tucseth rumbled, as equally at a loss as to how to answer. She is feeling. I don't think you can help, but, it may not hurt to try. He turned to gaze at D'rew, eyes whirling yellow, and offered a gentle bump of his nose to Vitra's shoulder.

Siorreya ~ Green Amagetith

Siorreya’s peal of laughter was probably a little too loud, but she cared little, and her joy was piggy backed off Amagetith’s, who was prancing in place. “I would help you, but I’m having to much fun up here.” The blonde said between giggles, looking over at Maz’ru. This was the fun she enjoyed having with Maz, and for a moment all the awkwardness from the past kiss was forgotten.

Look look what we did, it was so sneaky. 'Yes dear, you did great. That was fun, maybe we should do that again to some one else! Don’t you want to fly today dear? Let’s focus on that.' Oh yes, good point. 

“As I was saying… You should get your own gear fastened and on that mischievous dragon of yours is you ever want to lift off the ground!”

Sio blew her bangs out of her eyes and gave her friend another wicked smile. “I don’t seem to have any issues with my gear, thank you very much.” She leaned back and forth to show off the sturdiness of the gear, and placed her hand over her heart dramatically, “I don’t know what you mean, we are the picture of innocence my dear man!”

Sio whipped her long blond braid of her shoulder at Maz’ru’s last comment and watched with the lingering joy and fun as he took off with his blue dragon, hide gleaming. They flew smoothly, even if the launch looked a little sharp, and Siorreya felt envy creep in. She glanced down at her dragon, wondering if the envy was truly hers, or her dragon’s.

She patted her green’s neck, ‘We can go next, as soon as they land’ and waved at D’rew to inform him of her intent. He gave her the okay, but seemed distracted, walking over to a blue dragon and a girl with her hand’s over her temples. Other than a little curious, Sio shrugged it off as nerves, and watched as her friend came in for a easy landing. “Take to the sky Mimsy, we are next!” Mimsy, seated on Ama’s neck ridges chirped and launched, getting a head higher the Sio’s head, ready to fly along with them.

Amagetith was moving instantly to step forward, her excitement driving her, and they met Maz and Quilath halfway.

Good fly Quilath, now our turn our turn!!! Watch us go!

In Amagetith’s excitement she was already hopping to get past them, and Sio called back, “So that’s how pro’s do it huh? Now watch the ladies at work Maz.” She winked, but they were already moving from semi-slow hops to a faster short burst of run. She wasn’t too surprised for the take off as her dragon’s elation was pulsing through her. Sio felt her stomach drop as the sleek green jumped into the air, and the green dragon bugled her joy as the wind caught under her wings, driving them up. A smaller bugle sounded beside them as Mimsy flew beside them now, enjoying the fly time with her girls.

Look at us, Mine, in the air together. Look at us.

Yes, we are magnificent aren’t we love? This is amazing. The most fun we’ve had in a long time, don’t you think?

Oh yes, mine, so much fun. Look what I can do! With suddenness she banked to the right, away from Mimsy, and then back to the left, her speed and agility plain with the polished movements. They banked around the lake in a sharp turn that had the small woman catching her breath, holding the leathers tightly and smiling brightly.

Wow, you are amazing Ama! That went by so fast though.

Yes, I am fast aren’t I? I shall slow down a little. And with a lift of her wings, they did just that, gliding the rest of the way, drawing out what little time left they had in the air. They landed, and Siorreya laughed, throwing her arms out and closing her eyes.

“That was AMAZING!! Wow, I can’t wait to fly the whole island!”

Yes we will do that soon! Did you see us Quil? Did you see us Maz! We are of the air!!!

The dragon veered her hops in their direction, her head high with pride and elation, and the small green firelizard landed smoothly to take her place on Amgetith's neck ridges.

Riana & Camachath

'I will need to make some adjustments after lessons today. You've grown again.', she told the brown, amusement tinting her words as she spoke. Camachath rumbled at her as he patiently waited for her to finish hooking the riding gear in place. <I have.>, he told her plainly as she tugged one last time on the last strap. Riana looked up at Camachath, a small smile on her face. It had been months and some days she still could not believe the great, brown beast before her, had chosen her. He was stocky and sturdy, growing well and she was proud of him. Proud to be his rider, even if others still behaved differently towards her on occasion. <Do not worry about them. You have friends and of course, you have me!> Camachath dropped his large head down to look at his rider with one great, whirling eye. 'I do have you.', she told him, love and affection flooding her heart as she scratched his eye ridge. Friends and people who didn't like her would come and go, she would always have Cam. <Always.>

A short time later she was seated on Cam's back, like the rest of her class, anticipating D'rew's inspection. There was an energized buzz among the group and when she heard No'va's question to D'rew she couldn't help but glance from the other brownrider to the weyrlingmaster as he made his way through the group. It would be nice to finally fly. <Yes, it would.>, Cam agreed, shifting a bit to resettled his straps before D'rew came to them for inspection. The thought of flying worried her a little, she was used to being on the ground, hardly ever higher than a runner's back. <We will be much higher than a runner>, Cam cut into here thoughts, amused. She couldn't help but grin as she gave him a loving slap. 'Indeed we shall. Just don't drop me.', she teased.<I would never!>, Cam protested, shaking her gently in her seat. Ri had to stop herself from bursting out with laughter. 'I know love, I know. Let's listen now before we get in trouble.' Camachath rumbled

When D'rew confirmed that they would indeed be flying, Cam gave a short bugle and his tail flicked the ground behind him. She joined her classmates, giving a whoop of excitement at the announcement. Even as nervous as she was, Ri couldn't help but feel her excitement grow as D'rew spoke and then, once his instructions were given, he started them off by sending No'va and his Alduntulath into the air first. Both rider and dragon followed the pair as they made their circle around the lake. It seemed simple enough to her and with a rumble Cam agreed with her. <We will make this flight just as easily as Alduntulath.>, he said, flooding her his confidence and knew that he was right.

They watched as Joia and her white went next, Ri had wondered if the tiny dragon was going to be strong enough to carry his rider in flight. <Of course, he is>, was all Cam said, to which Ri just smiled. She was glad that Tellamuth was able to carry his rider, she'd have been very sad for Joia had he not. Patient, to a point, and mostly content to watch her classmates take their flights, they waited to take their turn around the lake. When it was finally their turn, Cam shook himself slightly, settling Ri in her straps gently, and moved forward toward the ledge. They waited for D'rew to tell them they could go and when they did Ri smiled as Camachath lifted and stretched out wings that seemed almost too wide for him.

Ri shook the nervousness from her body, or tried to as she felt the brown's body move, wings lifting and sturdy legs dropping into a crouch. The initial lift off had Ri giving an audible, "Oof!", as she wobbled in her seat. Wide wings were great unless you were learning to take off with a human on the back. <I am sorry!> 'Don't worry, I am alright. Even out some, you're leaning too far to the right.'" Camachath rumbled at his rider and did as she said, working his wings into a steady beat until he flew smooth and even. She had a death grip on the straps in front of her and she might have clenched her eyes shut once they were much higher in the air. <This is exhilarating, Riana!>, Cam told her in his even-toned voice, though she could feel his happiness at being in the air. She pried her eyes open finally and sat up from where she had been leaned down over Cam's neck.

The wind pushed at her and she was ever so grateful that she maintained her riding gear as instructed and doubly glad that D'rew had checked it before letting them all fly. She couldn't help the smile as she looked around her. She watched his wings as Cam beat them evenly, feeling the strength of the muscles moving beneath her. Her gaze was then drawn to the water of the lake below and she froze, clenching the straps. It was beautiful sure, but they were so high! <Where did you think we would fly?>, Camachath asked heer, amused at his rider's sudden wake of nervousness. 'Smarty dragon.', she replied, trying to shake off her nerves and enjoy their flight. She tensed up when he angled to make the turn around the lake to return. He made the turn easily enough, even with her stomach jolting to the side. <Are you alright?>, Cam asked as they made their return all too soon. 'I am, of course! I just need to get used to this, that's all. <We should choose a high weyr then, with a big ledge for me!> 'Alright, but let's land in one piece first, yeah?', Ri told him, clearly amused.

They landed with little trouble, though it took his several paces to come to a stop and he nearly smacked one of his siblings with a wing as he was closing them, which he repeatedly apologized for. 'Calm down big guy, it's okay.', Ri told him as he circled to finally settle a little behind the group. <I am calm now.>, he told her, though he still vibrated a little with excitement. <But I can not wait to fly more.> Riana smiled brightly and gave him a gentle pat. 'Me too, Camachath, me too.'
