A man was running through the night, onto the Height of the Cliffs.
S'tol had told him he needed to meet him in person. It was too important to trust with a firelizard. He wouldn't have much time, though, as any watchdragon would detect Oyessuth quick. Yet meeting in the Red Wood would be too dangerous to do at night. And it couldn't wait until day, his brother had told him. It had to be in the dark. So, with the failure to Impress on his mind, Shintagoi ran with a black cloak over his head. He stopped right at the edge, no moon in sight. Just the stars to light up his way. The ocean's breeze whipped around him and nearly sent his hood off his head. He better make this quick. Shintagoi stared at the thrashing water, like black glass in the sunless sky. He wouldn't be able to sleep after this, likely. Once he was awake, there was no use going back to sleep.
And just like that, the large brown appeared from between and landed on the cliff. While S'tol hadn't been disowned for Impressing brown, seeing as he melded with an impressive one, the disappointment from their father was very clear. Shintagoi hadn't thought of much himself; he would still be able to reach great heights. All that mattered was that he himself would soon ride bronze and lead Mavros into glory. With his help, Mavros would even hold a candle to Telgar, though it would take a lot of work and a lot of force. S'tol slid off Oyessuth's leg and landed on two feet, taking off his riding helmet. He was a fine example of a man, with loose curls in his brown hair and fierce blue eyes. Not as fine as Shintagoi himself, of course, but sharp indeed.
"Shintagoi." He gruffly said, saluting his little brother. "Or, perhaps S'goi?"
"Still Shintagoi. I haven't found my bronze yet." He answered with as much crispness as a leader required.
"Better than Impressing less, I suppose."
"Indeed. Now, what have you come for? What is so important?" Shintagoi asked. After all, it was what he came for.
S'tol nodded. "First thing's first. Ollena. She didn't Impress a gold this recent clutch. She...she Impressed blue." S'tol shook his head. "Father's mad as all. So is Mother. She's being disowned, you know." The shock on Shintagoi's face was clear. "She was passed up for the most tomboyish girl you'd ever see. Tolaza, her name is."
"Tolaza! You mean that sorry, dirty Holdless-born drudge Impressed gold?!" Shintagoi remembered her. She was brought in by a sorry sympathetic drudge and raised as one, and she was supposedly the same age as him.
"Yes. A pretty one, too."
"And Ollena Impressed blue?!"
"Yes. But there's something even more important that you have to know."
"What?"
"Mother's sick."
A pause. Shintagoi gasped. He loved his mother, even though she wasn't nearly as graceful of a creature as himself. "You mean...Telgar could lose her?"
S'tol nodded. "Enith is growing more and more gray. The Healers are investigating, but it isn't looking good. They estimate she has maybe six fortnights to live. Unless a miracle happens."
The news came with a heavy feeling. While Enith wasn't the Senior Gold of Telgar, she was the mother of many strong clutches. If Enith went between, it would leave Telgar without one of its key golds. "You...you're not serious? Surely Mother won't die?"
S'tol shook his head sadly. "Nope. She's doomed to die." Their mother's gold produced large clutches usually, so if Enith was lost... "I'm sorry, Shintagoi, but I had to tell you. If my firelizard lost the message-"
He couldn't finish his words. A shout was heard from the watchdragon's post, with the dragon taking off to meet with the brownpair. S'tol ran up onto his dragon's back, hooked himself in, and ordered Oyessuth between. They were gone to Telgar, and Shintagoi had to run back to his quarters as soon as possible. The news certainly troubled him. Surely one of Telgar's golds would lay a new queen egg, but how many brave men would be lost in the meantime?
May Telgar stay strong.
