Rachel - Blue Aslith
G'rett - Bronze Mastromideth
K’var - Brown Kabutenth
Rachel, for one, had never been so happy to have a hatching over. She felt like she might throw up, her stomach twisting in on itself as hatching had progressed; with each Between, her self-blame got more and more blunt. By the time the third, the little Brown, popped away into oblivion, not even Aslith could pull her out of her spiral of self-loathing.
Three. THREE!! How could they have missed that badly!? Her hands shook as she moved back to her Blue’s neck, pushing herself down into the seat on his shoulders without a word. Aslith rumbled his concern, turning to look at Rachel as she limply pulled the straps in place over her thighs. At least the little Gold found hers? It was a silver lining, he was trying… but by the chaos stirring below them, it was barely that. The Bluerider shouting had clearly lost his mind, and one of the Spring Storms goldlings was attempting to put him in his place.
You did you best, love. The soothing voice slipped into her thoughts. Her hands stilled on the straps. ‘My best… our best, wasn’t good enough, was it? We’ve never lost three before. And never a Bronze.’ Aslith rumbled softly, twisting softly to push his nose against Rachel’s boot. Do not drift away from me. She blinked, looking at the Blue as he tilted his head, a swirling yellow eye focusing on her solely. You cannot take the sole blame. We did what we could, they do not blame us. She sniffled, not quite crying, but she just… hurt. Her heart, her soul – hurt for the ones they had failed.
Rachel… ‘I’m not leaving you.’ Her mind voice was soft, and she didn’t think it convinced Aslith or herself. You need to rest. ‘I need a drink. And a good roll in the furs.’ Aslith chuckled – that sounded much more like his Rachel. Your Greenrider, perhaps? Rachel slapped the Blue on the neck, hard enough to make him grunt with surprise. ‘She’s not MY Greenrider. YOU did that, not me.’ Aslith laughed in her mind, a warm sound that wrapped around her like strong arms, as he moved to the end peered down, waiting for the chaos below to finish so they could leave. I wanted very much to get his rider away.
G'rett - Bronze Mastromideth
What was meant to be an exciting and happy event turned strange quick enough. After the first Bronze betweened, the green weyrling had all but buried her face in his arm at the first. Her murmured explanation was enough, and he reached his free hand up to pat hers. “It’s okay, totally understandable.” Which it was; though Sonath never spoke to him, the little Green didn’t have to. She was so expressive, from nose to tail, one could easily see what the young Green’s mood was if you took the time.
Thinking of Sonath, it reminded him briefly that he needed to track down the Dragonhealer and speak with her. He’d heard, mostly through rumor, that with enough interest she might be willing to do a class on Dragonhealing itself. He wanted to let her know that, once he was out of Weyrling ranks, he was very interested. As a Healer, but now with Mari’s Sonath, as a friend that wanted to make sure he could help her as the dragon grew. Marilsa’s words pulled him back and he glanced over at the Clutch – it was easy to see what Blue she was talking about. G’rett chuckled. “Faranth knows, but it does give him personality, doesn’t it?”
He did give a grunt of surprise when the twin Browns showed up; even more so when they wandered off from the boys to pick a pair of the younger female candidates. Mari gasped and G’rett barked a soft laugh. “Not really, but don’t be shocked. It happened in my clutch group. Well, the female bonding a Brown, not the twins in one egg thing.” See, it was going better. Almost as soon as the thought was formed, the little Blue vanished and either it was Mari or Sonath that had reacted first, he couldn’t be sure. She started to pull away and reflex – as well as remembering they were on the ledges – had him snagging the Greenie back.
Arms tight around her, he let her bury her head against his chest and turned his body with hers, trying to edge his bulk between her and the edge. “Shhhh, hey, it’s okay. Breathe, Mari… come on, if you lose it, Sonath will lose it. Relax.” He ran a hand over her back, suddenly regretting pulling his friend up here with him. He’d wanted to have her up high, let her have a dragon’s eye view of the hatching, but now. When she tried to pull back, he let her but kept an arm loss around her shoulders all the same in case. Her question was answered with a head shake. “Don’t think so. I mean, you always lose a couple, but –“
Another gone. That was it – she asked to go, in as many words as she could muster, and he nodded. “it’s okay, Mari. Just focus on her, okay?” He was just moving to help her up onto Mastromideth when the shouting started. What in the name of – the first voice he didn’t know; the second made him groan. Mollin…. And then Srunae joined in. “Come on, up you go.” He caught Mari’s waist from behind with his hands, helping her up only the Bronze’s bent leg and then to his back. We are coming, Sonath. The noble part of Mastro wanted to simply leap into the air and try to fix everyone’s problems; G’rett reminded him that he had to wait.
‘Ask Danovelith to ask Srunae if we can fly out. Tell her why and ask her if she needs us.’ Mastro rumble as G’rett climbed up onto his back, this time putting Mari in front of him. G’rett wrapped his arms forward around her, one around her waist and the other grabbing the grip on his Bronze’s harness. Danovelith? G’rett asks if we may fly out? We have Green Sonath’s rider with us, and neither are doing well. G’rett wishes to reunite them as quickly as we can.. unless your rider had need of us?
K’var - Brown Kabutenth
K’var had finished feeling Kabutenth a full bowl of meat and another part of a second as the others made their way in. He’s looked up, smiling as the pair of Browns had joined him – only to realize they were walking with girls, not boys. Well now.. that was different, wasn’t it? He’d nodded to them both, favoring them with smiles as they caught up bowls to feed their own new bonded. He ran his hands over Kabutenth’s head, the hatchling giving a great yawn under his touch. Now that he was full to almost bursting, he was sleepy. He’d already asked if they could go sleep twice, but K’var told them they had to wait for the others. And, plus… K’var didn’t know where to go from here.
The ruckus outside stirred the Brown up, and his lifted his head as K’var pushed to his feet. “What is going on out there?” He mused out loud, not to anyone directly, and his dragon stood gently to follow him. Someone is yelling. K’var looked at Kabutenth. “Yes, I can hear that.” Well, you asked – K’var reached to rest a hand on the Brown’s head. “I didn’t mean it quite that literally.” Ah. K’var ran his fingers over the Brown’s head, then turned to see Aleni heading there way with… ah, the Gold hatchling. A Bronze and a Brown followed her – looked like they were done.
The girl looked… very upset. There was clearly something he’d missed. One of the girls with the Browns moved to speak to Aleni as she started feeding her hatchling, and K’var found himself stepping over to join them. He looked at the one girl, then at the Gold’s newly chosen. “Are you going to be okay?” He looked over his shoulder; he could still hear the shouting. “Want us to go out there and shut him up for you?” He looked at Aleni, then at Karo. “I’m sure we get enough of us together, we could make him bugger off.” He did kind of what to know what was going on, but since Aleni had seemed so upset when she’d come into the room, he felt it was probably best not to ask now. He’d find out anyway later, he was sure. With all that noise? It was a given it would be gossip within hours… if it took that long. Kabutenth tottered to remain at K’var’s side, seemingly unconcerned with the drama playing out.
