NAME: Aryon
RANK: Weyrfolk
AGE: 17 turns
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual
PETS: None
APPEARANCE: Aryon wears straight black hair he inherited from his mother no longer than his ears. His hazel eyes, strong jaw and nose are his father’s. His completion is a little tanner than his father’s was, another inheritance from his mother. He has good posture, which was drilled into him by his aunt, as she can’t abide slouching. He is a rather sullen-looking young man, prone to scowls more often than smiles. He likes simple, dark colored clothes, usually bare of any sort of embellishment. He likes to think he is plain-looking, but his strong features and six foot two height make this a rather inaccurate statement.
PERSONALITY FAULTS: Aryon is perfectly happy to blend into the crowd. Most of this comes from his ever-growing familiarity with being “the new kid” and all the troubles that come with this. Aryon finds it difficult to connect with people his own age because many of them haven’t had to experience much loss. Aryon is a bit of an approval-seeker, and will usually latch onto one adult and follow them around like a lost canine pup. Aryon has difficulty with forming strong connections with people, as he is afraid to lose them. He also won’t grow overly attached to items, as it is too easy for them to be lost or taken or left behind when he moves again. Aryon lives in the perpetual belief that everything is temporary, and he will be expected to uproot and move again. He lives with always just a little bit of fear in the background, as he is deathly afraid of losing anything that he loves. He is uncomfortable around overly happy people, as he feels there’s something wrong with him for not managing to be as happy as they are. Aryon has no problem holding grudges, and quickly associates one bad experience as the norm. He isn’t always very adept at reading people, although he does try to overcome this.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS: Aryon is a curious boy, and willing to try just about anything. He has learned the hard way how quickly things can change, and so he is never afraid to jump into a new experience. He lacks a certain amount of imagination, which makes him susceptible to the whims and wills of others. However, he is willing to think the best of everyone until proven otherwise. He is willing to give second chances, but after that it is very difficult to win back his trust. He knows he still has a lot to figure out about life, and tries to stay open-minded because of that. He is open to criticism, and has an incredibly thick skin. Aryon has learned to relish and treasure everything that makes him happy, especially those things that made him happy the soonest after his father’s death. Aryon used to have difficulty with sharing the attentions of adults, but has learned to move beyond that instinct after his aunt Mara began looking after him.
FAMILY:
Father Ratim (deceased)
Mother Onya (deceased)
Aunt Mara (38)
Various other aunts, uncles, and cousins he doesn’t speak to
HISTORY: Aryon never knew his mother, as she died giving birth to him. Thus, he and his father were inseparably close. He developed a difficulty with learning to share, because of this. As an only child with a very strong relationship with his father, he never really had to share much of anything. Thus, he had difficulty making friends, although he was very fond of the ones he did manage to make. He lived this way for nearly thirteen turns, in a very easy and predictable life.
Ratim had fallen ill the fall of Aryon’s thirteenth year. As fall turned to winter, Ratim ignored early warning signs that his illness was returning, and much worse, as his immune system had been severely weakened during his first illness. By the time Ratim collapsed and Aryon ran to fetch the healers, it was much too late to save Aryon’s father.
Aryon had met his aunt Mara on occasion. She came to visit them the most, every few turns or so, usually whenever she could convince her masters to give her a break during her training. He found her to be an intimidating woman, and didn’t like having his father’s attention split between Aryon and his frightening aunt. He hadn’t liked her visits much. Suddenly, he found himself stuck with the woman. Despite her distance from Igen, she was the first of his aunts and uncles to come at the news of Ratim’s death. His other aunts and uncles had stammered and stuttered excuses as to why they could not take in Aryon: They had no room, they were too busy to look after another child, they barely had enough to feed themselves. He had felt more and more abandoned with each excuse, more and more afraid for his future. Until Mara had spoken up, denouncing all of them for abandoning their family in their family’s greatest time of need.
At first, Aryon had been terrified of living with Mara. But as time went on, he began to realize that her brusque nature was merely a tool, and one she used on everyone. She was far kinder to him than she’d ever been when she visited, and in little ways. She allowed him to shadow her as she worked in the infirmary, and was quick to crush instantly any protests any of the other healers had at his presence. She encouraged his curiosity, answering any questions he had. And despite her own obvious distaste for “useless skills”, she never discouraged his appreciation for well-done embroidery. Despite how good to him Mara was, though, she couldn’t replace the hole that his father had left. She didn’t try to, either. Aryon found it odd, sharing his grief and trust with a woman he had feared and disliked for so many years, but they slowly grew closer as family.
Aryon knew of Mara’s distaste for the hierarchies of the dragons in the Weyrs, but he found himself drawn to the simplicity of that order. Everyone knew where they stood in that order. Besides that, the allure of a lifetime companion who completely understood him was just too appealing to Aryon after his father’s death. Aryon began to foster the secret hope that he would be chosen by a dragon. He dreamed of flying, of searing Thread from the sky. And while he was certain Mara wouldn’t discourage his dream, he couldn’t bring himself to tell her about it; the fear of seeing her lips thin and her eyes narrow in silent disapproval of his dream would have been too much for him to handle.
