NAME: Tavmar
RANK: Trader
AGE: 25
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bi
DRAGON: N/A
WHER: Brown Task
PETS: N/A
APPEARANCE: Tav stands right at 5'11, is broad-shouldered, and well-muscled in both his legs and shoulders. His skin is tanned and weathered from a life of traveling Pern, though it is not completely unpleasant to the touch. He has gentle eyes and a kind smile when he chooses to offer a true smile and not the trader's smile he has been raised and trained to give to make customers comfortable.
He has plenty of scattered scars on hands, legs, and arms though none of those scars are major or noteworthy. Tav sports a shorter hair cut in the back, the top and front rarely getting longer than his ears. He also keeps a close trimmed beard and mustache combo that he is quite proud of and is never seen without.
PERSONALITY FAULTS: Tav has lead his life with a mostly small group of people, his trading family, and as such is not overly trusting of most outsiders. He has developed good bonds of trust with the leaders of the weyrs and Holds that he and his family trade with but outside of those few, trust does not always come easily to the man.
Because of his lack of trust he tends to lead a solitary life, even among the traders. He has not had a very long list of lovers either, as he tends to be a rather possessive and jealous mate. Where he is not cruel or unkind, quite the opposite truly, he can be a bit overbearing at times, even when he does not mean to be.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Tav is quite friendly when it comes to trading or when in a situation that requires him to be openly friendly. Otherwise, where he is not standoffish, he is quiet and often does not go out of his way to speak to others unless spoken to, but he will speak. However, he is more likely to be found far out of the way, strumming his guitar and humming or singing a tune than actually speaking to anyone.
He will play for just himself or anyone that will listen but will shy away from compliments of any kind, being an extremely humble man when it comes to his talents. He is a loyal and steadfast friend and companion, once his trust and love are earned one will almost always have it. He is a forgiving man, but only so long, and once that bond is truly broken he will completely write the person off and there will be no turning back.
FAMILY: Tav's mother and father are still alive and well, still traveling and trading with the caravan. He has two older brothers, a younger brother, and two younger sisters. He also has several extended family members, uncles, aunts, and cousins that are spread out in other trading caravans across Pern, some that have even left the trader's life for Hall and weyr lives. Not many, but a few.
HISTORY: Tavmar grew up unlike most on Pern. Rather than growing up in the safety of either Hold, Hall, or Weyr, he grew up in a trader's caravan, traveling the roads and trails of Pern, bringing goods and news from one place to another, like many generations before him. His family was not made up of those who had been exiled for causing trouble, they were legitimate traders and allowed no troublemakers among their clan. They were honorable and traditional and exiled those who caused trouble for them, choosing to adopt the Holder method of marking exiles and expelling them from their caravan as soon as possible regardless of location. Of they were in a Hold, Hall or Weyr punishment was referred to by those in charge of that location, turning their backs on the troublemakers just that quickly. Harsh yes, but it had served the clan well enough over the Turns.
His family is a close-knit unit, always focused on each other and maintaining their caravan properly. They spent many Turns traveling the same route, going to the same Holds and Weyrs. He was still a child when they had stopped to trade at Fort Hold. It was there that Tav received, with great humility, the guitar that he carries with him still. He had taken to the hold harper and the music he played, be it learning songs or just dancing music. His family often played music around campfires so it wasn't anything new, but Tav had an affinity for it, and the Harper, an older, wise man, had an eye for those with talent.
He had tried to get Tav's parents to relinquish him to his, and the Harper Hall's care, but they would hear nothing of it and it had terrified Tavmar to even think of being away from his family, so at the end of the week a healthy trade was made to the boy of the guitar, as his parents could not deny their son had a gift for music. A gift had been heatedly refused by his father, no matter how much the Harper had tried to insist, as the guitar was far too valuable in his father's eyes. In addition to the trade, a promise was made between Tav and the trader to always return during their route and show his improvement to him specifically. Turn after Turn they made their way back and forth along their trade route, Tav always anxious for their time at Fort Hold so that he could return to the Harper. If he was lucky, his father would be willing to trade the Harper for new music before leaving for their next destination.
This went on until one Turn after Tav turned 15. They had returned as always but that Turn they had found a new Harper at Fort hold as the old one had passed away from an illness. Tav had felt like he had lost a favored Uncle when he learned of the old Harper's passing and the guitar and the sheets of music that he had became as treasured to him as if they were the last of their kind on Pern. They weren't of course, but as time passed Tav became more and more possessive over the items and, when he could, added to his small collection of copies of music.
Life continued on for the trader and his family after that, a living had to be made and people needed their goods. However, at some point, around the evening campfire, the discussion came up about the southern continent and the lone weyrhold, Mavros. Tavmar's father had received a message from a relative that had, several Turns past, Impressed a dragon and, for whatever reason, gone south. Said dragonrider had gotten themselves attached to the lone weyr that was in some desperate situation for supplies as they had, at that time, been cut off by the other weyrs and received no aid or outside help. The caravan had of course heard of the weyr, though belatedly, through their travels, and after some time it was decided that half the caravan would go south and the other would remain in the north. Tav, his parents, and siblings all were part of the venture south, leaving the caravan north in the care of one of Tav's younger Uncles. Why Tavmar's father had pushed so much for the change had initially been very strange to Tavmar. It had been so far from all the family had ever known, and the dragonrider had left the family for a different family, which many members of the caravan considered an abandonment. Those members obviously were not going to follow his father south. Tavmar's father had argued, however, that no matter the path, the man was still family as was his dragon, and they needed help they could provide. Besides, he was getting older and had seen all of the north and would like to see new places before he could no longer do so. It did not take long for the kind-hearted Tavmar to come around to his father's way of thinking, and his mother very rarely argued with his father if he was making his own reasonable argument.
It took the better part of a Turn for the family to get their affairs in order, from the splitting of the caravan, goods, and marks to be split or traded, Holds, Halls, and Weyrs to be informed of the changes in the caravan and various other people. Not to mention waiting for Threadfalls. It took the rest of the Turn for them to actually get passage on two ships and make their way across the sea to the southern continent, again, no easy feat with Thread falling but they did manage to make it to the Southern continent unscathed. Although the expectation had been to initially go directly to Mavros, they decided they needed to establish a new trade route in the south instead and, because there were plenty of holds with which to do that, time was taken to connect with other traders in the area and make those connections first. After several weeks Tav and his family split from the main group and, after some careful bargaining, managed to charter passage to the Weyrhold of Mavros to visit their kin and bring the goods they had brought specifically for Weyrhold.
It was a clear, crisp day when a mid-sized ship heavily laden with goods docked at the harbor, Tavmar and his family finally reaching their long-awaited destination. They had sent word ahead before they had left on their journey from southern mainland, so they were greeted at the end of the dock by their relation but also by the Headwoman from the weyrhold who was seemingly very happy with the goods as she cataloged each bundle and crate that was unloaded from the ship. Sometime later, once the ship was completely unloaded, Tav and his family were taken to the Weyrhold proper and made welcome to their new home.
The original plan was for Tavmar’s father to offer his expertise in bartering to hopefully assist the weyrhold to establish better trading contracts which ended up with his father becoming irritable after just a month and he set off with Tavmar’s brother to “do it right”, leaving his wife and son behind in the weyrhold. Tavmar found that, where he had spent his entire life traveling and trading, there was something endearing about the weyrhold folks, and found himself integrating well with many of those that called the place home.
It was during his months of learning his way around the island he now called home that he found himself adventuring a bit too much and one thing led to another, which ended in the once trader sliding down a small cliff, his foot getting caught and somehow or another twisting just the wrong way so that the ankle snapped. Having spent the required time in bed and off his feet, Tav had become irritable and, as soon as the resident healer allowed him to start walking with a crutch, he was out and about at whatever hour he was awake to do so. It was on one of his outings, a late-night hour, that he met and had a long conversation, the first of many, with a wher handler. Initially Tav was quite put off by the man’s wher, he had never really been a fan as the beasts in the northern holds had always been so violent at the ends of heavy mental chains, but this man’s beast seemed different.
It had taken several late night outings and conversations with the handler, a guard for the weyrhold, to convince Tav that there was more to the oddly distant relatives of dragons and firelizards than just the fact they could only dwell in the dark and growl menacingly at strangers. He had been, during the course of his recovery, trying to think of what to do with himself now that he had moved across the entirety of Pern with his family. He was not going to be trading for a while, a broken ankle had no place on a ship, or anywhere really, but it was easier to move around on land for him regardless and he would be well again soon, so he allowed his new friend to take him to his master about joining the other candidates that would be vying for the chance at receiving a wher of their own. He wasn't a miner or a crafter at all, but he could hunt real well. He could skin and gut just about anything he could kill so he was handy with a bow and blade. He could be a decent enough guard he supposed. Time would tell one way or the other.
