Turn 2761, Late 6th Month
10th Pass, 6th Turn
10th Pass, 6th Turn
The wedding was held in the morning, the gather itself starting up at right about the same time. After all, not everyone was invited to the ceremony itself, so for those that did not have access, they could celebrate away at the gather instead. Truth be told, A’zael thought he’d probably prefer the gather to the ceremony, and were it not a man he considered a friend getting married, and were he not also in a political position that obligated his attendance, he definitely would have been having fun at the gather already instead of sitting in one of the front rows of ceremony attendees bearing witness to the Holds’ ridiculous traditions of monogamy. B’rax was at his side, as they waited for the other guests to find their seats so the thing could get underway already.
The ceremony itself was a seriously dull affair in A’zael’s opinion. Vows were exchanged between the two, mediated by a harper, who occasionally said something apparently important to the ceremony or prompted one or the other to speak. He’d actually never attended a wedding before, but at least it wasn’t terribly long. When it was over, he and B’rax joined the many other guests in waiting to speak with the newlyweds to offer congratulations. “What did you think?”
He shot B’rax a look, “You really need to ask? If I’m lucky I’ll never need attend another one of these.”
An amused smile pulled at the older man’s lips, “Hm. Perhaps this will keep you from any further pursuit of Lady Relaena?”
A’zael eyed the man, “That pursuit ended turns ago, B’rax, you’ve no need to worry. And do you really think so little of me that you imagine I’d pursue a married woman?”
With further amusement that told A’zael the man was teasing him, B’rax replied, “When it comes to women, A’zael, I’m honestly not sure just what you would do in any given situation.”
A’zael couldn’t help the short laugh that escaped him. He supposed that was fair. He grinned, “Well you know, Relaena does have a sister….”
Then they were before the bride and groom and B’rax could only cast a quick look at him through narrowed eyes before he turned to the newlyweds. He clasped Degranik’s hand and offered congratulations before taking Relaena’s hand as well and wishing them a happy future. As the older bronzerider stepped away, Degranik grinned, “A’zael!”
Both men stepped forward to clasp arms and A’zael grinned back, “I’ll mourn for you today.”
Degranik laughed, casting a look back at his new wife, who seemed to be taking everything in stride with quiet grace, “I’m glad you came.”
“Well, one must occasionally make sacrifices for their friends,” A’zael responded with a laugh before turning to Relaena, “Best of luck, my lady. I’m sure your new husband will do all he can to make you happy.”
Relaena smiled softly, “And I him. And thank you, Weyrleader, for the generous offer to hold dragon races for us today. I must admit I’m quite eager to watch them. I’ve never seen dragon races before.”
“I didn’t know you were a betting woman, my lady,” A’zael shot back, teasing, but she apparently took him seriously.
“Oh, I’m not! I just want to watch,” she explained hurriedly.
A’zael laughed, but had mercy on her rather than keep up any teasing, “Of course. Mavros would not have made it this long without Jask’s generous firestone tithes. I’m more than happy to offer entertainment on this most important day for the Hold.” He glanced behind him at the others waiting their turn to speak with the couple, turned back to Degranik, “I’ll let you get back to your guests and meet you after lunch to start the races.”
“I’m looking forward to that as well. My wife may not be the gambling sort but I am,” Degranik grinned, before casting another look back at the woman, reassuring her, “Small bets only.”
A’zael didn’t hide his amusement, but Degranik didn’t seem to notice, before turning and heading for the festivities. There was quite a bit of time to kill before lunch and the races began, and he intended to have some fun after enduring the wedding ceremony.
OOC:
Everyone is welcome to attend the gather, though only ranking members of the Weyr would have attended the actual wedding ceremony. All of Mavros’s goldriders would have been in attendance, except Karredy, and Aleni would have been offered the chance to attend but could have decided against it (if she even left Riyo to come at all).
The Worlds Apart weyrlings are not yet old enough to ride their dragons, and their dragons cannot Between nor do they have the stamina to fly from Mavros to the Western Continent, so while they can attend, they must have gotten a ride from someone and left their dragons behind. Candidates likewise can attend saying they found a ride.
This post is just a one-off and not meant to be replied to. Everyone can make their own gather threads, and the races will be started later. I’ll make a second post here for the official start of the races.
