Muze looked over the dining tables, hoping to spot Joia or No’va – or someone that she recognized. Her brows creased upon finding no one, and slowly walked toward an open seat at the end of a mostly empty table. She settled down with her breakfast in front of her, picking up a piece of fruit and eating it as quickly as possible – trying not to think of that morning when Rachel had given her that same type of fruit.
“You’re food isn’t going anywhere.”
Her brown eyes glanced up at the familiar voice, surprised to see V’than sit down across from her. They hadn’t had a ton of one-on-one time ever since… Well, of course, it was ever since Rylath had risen… she wasn’t sure why not, maybe she knew V’than had been right and she had been unconsciously avoiding it. At the same time…she hadn’t consciously been doing it, so maybe it had been him? Or maybe she was overthinking it, V’than said she did that often enough.
“No? I’m pretty sure my bread was eying my fruit.”
One of V’than’s eye brows rose, eying his sister. “Well, that’s not a little weird…”
“You started the running food chatter.”
“I said they weren’t going anywhere.”
“Which would suggest it could go somewhere.”
V’than scowled at his sister. He forgot how she made him feel so much younger with the bantering back and forth, that he almost forgot the original reason he had sat down with her…not that he needed a reason to sit with her…
“Well, I am planning on going somewhere.”
Muze stopped chewing the last bite she had taken, eying her brother suspiciously. She hoped this wasn’t some drastic announcement of him going to a different Weyr or something, though that wouldn’t make much sense. Before she could overthink his announcement, he quickly followed with what he meant.
“I’m going to go visit mom and dad. And before I asked for permission to go – I don’t think they’ll let us between there, but maybe fly? I have to ask… but anyways, I wanted to ask if you wanted to go with me. You don’t have to, I just thought… you know, it’d be rude not to ask you.”
Muze swallowed her bite prematurely, wincing as the chunks of fruit slid down her throat. V’than mistakenly read her wince as a sign as she hadn’t wanted to go, and had ranted on about her not needing to go if she didn’t want to.
“Uhm… I don’t know.” She said, looking down at her food. She knew she probably should, even if her brother said she didn’t have to. Her whole life she had tried to prove to her dad she was enough and she had enjoyed the years of being free from that, even though technically it had only been months for them… which meant for them the feelings would all be fresh still, and she wasn’t sure she could face that.
They sat in silence for a while, V’than making small talk until he felt like he could broach the subject again.
“Take your time, there’s no rush… just let me know when you do.” V’than had finished his breakfast first, even though he had done most of the talking. Muze was picking at her hot cereal as V’than hesitantly stood up. “And… uhm… if you want to talk about it, just have Rylath send for me through Saruth.” He said with a half smile, but she barely glanced up, forcing a smile that faded as soon as he turned to leave.
