NAME: Lorthoren (goes by Lorth typically)
RANK: Wher Candidate
AGE: 26 Turns
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
WHER: None yet
PETS: None
FACECLAIM: Lee Pace
APPEARANCE: Standing at an average height of 5'5", Lorth isn't really the sort to stand out in a crowd. His shoulders are broad, his arms muscular, and he's handsome- which he's well aware of. His hair is long and wavy; he keeps it from growing too far past his ears, but he enjoys the slight scruffiness to his advantage. His eyes are a soft brown in his round face; he tends to walk with a self-confident swagger, an affected stride meant to appeal to others as much as his personality is.
PERSONALITY FAULTS: Prideful - distracted - risk-taker - liar - cocky - flirtatious
Lorthoren has a tendency to think rather highly of himself, his wealth of confidence sometimes landing him in trouble. He has a hard time actually knowing when to back off a situation, trying too hard either to impress people or simply too stubborn to give in. He may also sometimes jump feet-first into a situation most people would hang back to assess first.
He likes company and he's had nightly encounters over the Turns during his Candidacy, despite knowing that such an act is forbidden by Weyr rules. He's not going to tell anyone- why would he? Nothing's come of them, so it's not like he's done anything wrong. He doesn't hold back from flirting with others- men or women- and he's not shy about coming on strong- and he may not always accept a gentle refusal.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS: Silver-tongued - Motivated once started - Confident - Clever - Observant
Lorth prides himself on his ability to get along with people. His claim of being irresistible might not be exactly true, but he insists on it all the same. He likes to think that he's a born leader, and he is indeed confident in himself and his abilities- he might not step up the moment he's needed, but once he's started, he tends to put himself in as close to a leadership position as possible.
He tends to have a decent way in reading people, taking cues from posture and expression to get an idea of how a person is feeling without them saying a word. Neither will he mind being an ear for people to talk to. He vastly prefers company to being alone, rather good about finding ways to ease himself into a conversation and mingle with a crowd.
FAMILY: Etholo - Journeyman Smithcraft - 62 Turns
Mother: Renora - rider of blue Forimath - (Deceased)
Brother: E'nar - rider of green Kimonth - 25 Turns
Sister: Osli - Journeyman Beastcraft - 24 Turns
Brother: Athel - Weyrfolk - 20 Turns
Brother: Lanero - Candidate - 17 Turns
Son: Thonalar - Weyrbrat - 2 months (Mother: Inalda, Tanner Apprentice)
HISTORY: Lorthoren is the only full child of his mother and father, but he has siblings- others fathered by the same man though the mothers differ. Renora is a bluerider who desired a child and so went courting. She chose Etholo, and soon enough she got her wish. She birthed her son at the end of nine months, spent a brief period recovering, and then returned to her duties as a rider, leaving Lorthoren to be raised at the hands of crecheworkers. His father was a vague presence, often more concerned with his craft than a baby he couldn't really care for. That he didn't want to care for, if he were honest.
It never bothered the boy much; he had plenty to occupy himself, and none of it involved waiting for a father he barely knew to decide to take an interest in his life. Renora, whenever she wasn't busy, took over his care for a few hours or for a day, introducing him at a young age to her blue and, as she'd hoped, sparking the interest in following in her footsteps when he was old enough.
He was willing, too. The blue, Forimath, was friendly and never seemed to mind his company, and he was happy enough to help his mother, if she asked for it, to wash or oil him. She was also the one who coined the shorter name he still goes by to this day, despite the teasing he got as a child and the looks he gets as an adult.
He started as a Candidate in his thirteenth Turn. For seven Turns he went through lessons, Touching and Hatchings, left standing through all of them. Then a large group broke off, moving to found a new Weyr on the islands off the mainland after a long-standing disagreement with the current Weyrleaders; though he intended to join them at first, he decided in the end to hang back due to a clutch laid on the Sands, which he hoped might hold the partner he'd been waiting for. This might have saved his life in the end, considering the Threadfall that ravaged those who broke off, taking them unaware and resulting in many deaths of human and dragon.
He failed to Impress again- and again. For whatever reason, no dragon gave him more than a passing glance before passing him up- or more bothersome, taking themselves between. While he was counseled to be patient, the long Turns of being overlooked began to tell on him.
The final blow was his mother's death. Even the most experienced fighters could run afoul of the deadly spores, was what he was told afterward: they had, by some stroke of misfortune, been hit by a sizable clump, and when they jumped Between- they simply never came back out.
Lorth applied for a transfer the day after the Fall. He was still of age to Impress, though he had little hopes of it after ten Turns of Standing for clutch after clutch, and he really just wanted to be away from Tidewalk. Considering their feelings toward Mavros, it made perfect sense to transfer his loyalties there.
Not that it did a whole lot of good in the end: he settled in, and Stood for clutches with the new Weyr, but he aged out before gold Aerroth's clutch Hatched. For a short time he was aimless, not entirely sure what he was supposed to do now- he hadn't really let himself believe he'd never Impress, but now that he really had failed at that, he knew people would expect him to find something else to do with his free time: he tried his hand at several tasks, found he actually had a way with animals, and briefly apprenticed as a beastcrafter.
He also found himself a father- the birth of a child to a Tanner apprentice he'd shared a night with during his spell of uncertainty. He had no intention of shouldering that responsibility: a hatchling dragon was one thing, a human baby was another entirely. And this was about when he decided to throw in his luck at a wher- no dragon wanted him, fine. Whers are better anyway. And they got him a free pass at avoiding caring for something he had no interest in, no matter how annoyed Inalda was at him for his refusal.
