APPEARANCE:
Joia is a spitting image of her mother with long, dark brown hair and vivid, almost iridescent blue eyes. She has a slimmer build but prides herself on being as tough as anyone else. She doesn’t have a lot of fat on her, which makes her dislike the cold more than anything. Fair complexioned and pretty enough, she’d have made a man a fine wife if they’d gotten a chance to talk with her – her figure isn’t perfect, but it's fair enough, and her 5’6” puts her at the average for a young girl her age. She still could fill out, or gain a few inches, but it doesn’t seem to bother Joia either way. She is what she is, and she’s happy with that.
Personally proud of her skills as a weaver, even if they are basic, she often makes her own clothing when she can. She loves color, normally deeper jewel-type tones or brighter, vivid pastels if she can manage them. She doesn’t care for Blacks, but she will do browns if she has to. Given a choice, she prefers breeches, lighter shifts with a more masculine cut to them, and lower boots that aren’t too much trouble to get off and on. Given her habit of re-dying her clothing to change colors or testing and creating new colors for her own interests, her fingers seem to be permanently stained around the pad and under the nail with a rainbow of shades.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Most wouldn’t go far enough to say Joia is brute-headed, but they would have to admit she has a mind of her own. In spite of being told most of her place in life, she pretty much disregards that. She wants to know what life holds, how far she can go, and what the distant shores might hold. Part Daydream, part adventurer, she probably would have made a wonderful Harper if she’d ever had the chance to go that way. Fearless in many ways, she still has enough common sense to know how far is too far; and lucky enough for her, that common sense also sometimes gets her to pull up short of disaster… sometimes. When she wants to know something, she really doesn't know when to quick, often pushing others to be extremely frustrated with her persistence.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Curious and quick to pick up tasks given to her, she adores learning new things as long as they aren’t too gross. Joia isn’t particularly a ‘girly girl’ but she still has the same gross-out response to some tasks as any youngster in her age group. Even with that said, she would much rather try something and know she hates it, than not try something and miss an opportunity to learn something new or take part in a new adventure. This sense of exploration and eagerness to challenge herself often can often play in her favor, though older individuals can find it off-putting. She has a strong sense of personal self, but at the same time, she is more than willing to grow with the events and surprises life throws at her.
Schooled by her mother in the works of how to manage her future household, she knows how to do the basics of cooking and cleaning, as well as some sketchy details on gardening from her father; she also knows the basic reading, writing, and mathematics for managing future stocks and household stores – but she could use more teaching in that. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she’s focused her ‘future’ in learning weavercraft and dye-trade, as well as some basic embroidery. She has recently taken an interest in wirework jewelry and decorative semi-fancy stones but hasn’t dabbled in it directly. Joia also has an interest in learning about healing and herbs. Needless to say, she’s a bit of a jack-of-all-interests.
FAMILY:
Father; Jordor – Farmer (Age 57)
Mother; Maeria – Weaver, Dye maker (age 41)
Siblings; Jordin(brother, age 21), Dorer (brother, age 15), Maie (sister, age 6)
..plus a few random aunts, uncles, and cousins threw bloodlines
HISTORY:
Born second into her family, Joia is the favorite of her father. Spirited and a little wild, she tended as she grew up to scare the boys away on her own, saving her father and older brother the energy of having to deal with any wannabe suitors on their own time. She grew up wanting to know everything but involved with anything her parents or brother was doing, both wanted or not. Plowing, planting, fishing, cleaning… no matter what was happening, she had to be in the center of it; to learn how to do it, a dozen questions ready to fire off for all the details. Always ready for the challenge that would eventually come when whomever she was bugging say those magic words ‘Fine, do you want to help?’ it was always a happy, giggling ‘Yes!’
Though her need to be involved with everything finally faded off a bit as she aged, Joia still wanted to know the inner workings of what her parents did. She loved working with her mother, making the clothing for the family, and later others in the holding. She was working on her trade, hoping to possibly move onto the Weaver CraftHall which the spring planting behind them, but that was soon shelved by the visit of Searchers on the back of Dragons. She wasn’t sure why they had singled her out, picked her with her lavender dipped fingertips, but she wasn’t going to say no – it was, if nothing, and wonderful new experience.
(Added 1/26/18) It had started out great; new friends, new things to learn, and DRAGONS!! It was a Weyr, after all – Mavros Weyr, yea, but a weyr all the same right? She was happy, looking forward to all the new things the future might hold for her. She met a few people she didn’t like – Shintagoi for one; annoying little ashhead. But new friends outweighed the new annoyance – friends like Mizao, Aleni, and Karolinna. Time flew by, the friends growing closer, not realizing how quickly, or cruelly, fate could separate them.
When the day came when they got to meet the eggs of the newest clutch on the Sand. The experience was overwhelming, more than Joia had ever expected – the fact they got to actually speak to the little dragons in the eggs. She’d left the sands, sure her match was among the mottled eggs. Soon, Joia was sure she and her friends would be learning to care for their bonded partners. She was sure her match was the Spiral egg, or maybe the pretty Queen in the Flame-hued egg?
But.. it didn’t work out that way. Thought her eggs, her new friends, all hatched and almost all found their partners, none were her. She watched as Karo and Mizao left the Sand first; then Aleni, with the pretty, gentle Queen. She was alone, confused with the drama of the chaos, and now rumors about Aleni being a boy? She didn’t know what to do… she fled the Sands, knowing she couldn’t blame her friends because they had Impressed and she hadn’t, but it felt – wrong.
Lost, she threw herself into anything that would take her mind off the fact that her only friends in the Weyr were moving on, Weyrlings on their way to becoming Dragonriders, and She was… well, still in the Candidate Barracks. Maybe her time would come next time? Maybe… she didn’t know either she really wanted to chance the heartbreak again.
