NAME: Mizao
RANK: Weyrling
AGE: 18 Turns
GENDER: Female
ORIENTATION: Demisexual/Bi
DRAGON: Brown Wendiloth
APPEARANCE:
Mizao is quite short at 5'2” and a comfortably average weight, a slender build leaves her less curvy and round than she would like, giving her a slightly boyish appearance rather than that of a grown woman. At least her face is distinctly feminine, with the soft, rounded features one expects from her sex. Her eyes are large and expressive, a brown so dark they at times look almost black. Her hair is a similar shade to her eyes, sometimes appearing more black or slightly more brown depending on the light.
When she was young, she kept her hair long, as was proper for a young lady, but after beginning work in the smithcraft she was advised to cut it shorter to more easily keep it out of the way and she keeps it shoulder length now. Her skin is smooth and fair, telling of her life living majorly indoors, safe from Rukbat's rays. She may be a smith but that hasn't compromised her feminine tendencies and she enjoys dressing like a lady when she can, with a few dedicated work outfits to keep her better clothing safe and clean.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Although she has become more open to things in recent turns, Mizao is rather old fashioned and slow to accept concepts that do not fit into her world view. This can make her seem snobbish, stubborn, proud, and closed minded over all. She has a generally demure nature, quiet and reserved, and has a hard time speaking out and standing up for herself when it comes to men, taught by both her mother and father that it isn't a woman's place to do so. It's something she has been working on with the help of her closest mentor in the Smith Hall, but she still tends to fall into a shy, polite, doormat personality when interacting with men she has never met before. She is often too caught up on propriety and comes off as very cold and standoffish because of it. She is quite a perfectionist, and prone to overworking, keeping at something until she gets it just right. This perfectionism extends to those around her as well, however, and makes her come off as overly critical and demanding.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Mizao is a very obedient girl; she has no desire to challenge authority, break rules, or cause any sort of mischief. She may have a rather narrow world view, but she's very willing to work within it to achieve her goals, and work hard. She will gladly take up any task she's set to with equal enthusiasm, eager to show her superiors that nothing is too much for her handle, and that she isn't a complainer. She's grateful for any opportunity given to her, very aware of how very lucky she is to have had the opportunities she's already been afforded. She goes to work cheerfully, no matter the task, and always gives her all to whatever she does. She does not believe in half measures and 'good enoughs', if she does not do something right the first time, she WILL do it again, and again, until she DOES get it right. Calm and logical, she is hard to rile to any emotional extreme and is very reliable and responsible, able to keep a level head in extreme circumstances. She can be very nurturing and motherly when it comes to children, revealing a far more emotional side only to those a good deal younger than she is, as well as a saintly amount of patience. A quick study, she can easily jump in on most tasks and learn as she goes. She is also very creative, though she's only recently begun to explore this side of her, having had it stifled for a rather long time.
FAMILY:
Saronel – Father (38, JM Smith)
Mizuru – Mother (deceased)
Zurai – Sister (16)
Nelua – Sister (13)
Rinae – Sister (11)
Sarue – Sister (7)
HISTORY:
Mizao is the firstborn of five daughters. Born to Mizuru and Saronel, a traditional man from a long lineage of smiths, she was initially instructed by her mother in proper behavior for a lady and grew up expecting nothing more than to marry and raise a family, as both her mother and father believed was proper for a girl. As the eldest child, she was often given the most responsibility and helped her mother to raise her younger sisters while her father worked to support them all.
She and her sister Zurai, being the closest in age at only 2 turns apart, were very close, and Zurai was always eager to help her and their mother with the younger children when they came along. She considered her sister her best friend. When she was 13 turns, her mother was pregnant with her sixth child, but something went wrong during the birth and neither her mother nor the child survived. Mizao had been there for each of her sisters' births (though she of course did not remember Zurai's at all), and she had never been frightened by it, but there was so much blood, and her mother faded away so quickly, she became terrified of one day having her own child and dying in the same manner.
Their family mourned, and Mizao and her sisters were all honestly surprised by how hard their father took it. The generally stoic man fell into a deep depression for several months, the quality of his work slipped and he shut himself away at home, rarely interacting with his daughters, leaving Mizao and Zurai to care for them all and keep house. The two eldest sisters started worrying about what they should do, how they might be able to help their father, but the man finally managed to pull himself back together.
One morning he simply told Mizao to come with him, and set her to work at his forge. She was shocked, to say the least, but she did everything her father asked, afraid that if she didn't he might fall back into that terrible depression that had overtaken him. She worked with her father every day, doing basic tasks that a new apprentice might have been learning, never really knowing why, but she didn't question it, as she never questioned any decision made for her. While she was working with her father, her sister Zurai was left with the responsibility of caring for their younger sisters and keeping house on her own, and became somewhat overwhelmed with the task at the tender age of 11.
Zurai slowly but surely grew jealous of her older sister and the chance she had been given, and over the next turn became more and more bitter and resentful. Their friendship crumbled and the only interaction the two ever seemed to have were arguments. Zurai would argue with her about everything, anything to make Mizao as unhappy as she was. It wasn't fair, Zurai deserved the chance their father was offering just much as Mizao did, but Saronel seemed determined that only Mizao would work with him, the rest of them would become proper ladies. When Mizao asked why her sisters could not help out in the forge, he simply snapped at her that if the work was too much for her to handle on her own then she could return home and never come back, and that ended any further inquiry she might have made on behalf of her sisters.
She came to enjoy the work, even if it was only basic manual labor for the most part. It was something different, something she never thought she would experience, and watching her father work was incredibly fascinating. He made so many things, fashioned them seemingly out of nothing. She became completely enamored with the craft, and nearly a turn later her father sent her to the Smithcraft Hall to become a proper apprentice. It was frightening and exciting to leave home, but she left her family subdued by her father's words of warning. The Smithcraft was no craft for girls he told her, in no uncertain terms. He did not expect her to last long, and should he receive unfavorable reports about her from friends within the Hall then he would have her brought home immediately, for he would not have her disgracing him and their family.
And so she was sent away, traveling to Telgar Hold some days' travel away from the minor hold she had always known as home with a friend of her father's who was heading that way for further study toward Mastery. Quirren was the man's name, and he seemed to be a bit more progressive than her father. The two became friendly as they traveled, and Quirren assured her that so long as she worked hard, she would do well, but also confirmed that she would face many challenges that her male peers would not. She would have to work harder than any of them to prove her worth. It would not be easy, but if she was truly passionate about it, she could do it. Other women had, after all. This pep talk of sorts boosted her spirits immensely and she found within her a slow burning determination, steadily burning brighter each day they drew closer to Telgar.
At the Hall, though she had been warned both by her father and Quirren, she was still surprised at how few females were to be found. It made her nervous again, worried she would fail and return to her father in disgrace to be married off and die some terrible death in childbirth like her mother. It only fed her determination to succeed. And perhaps if she did well enough she could show her father that it was okay... that women could be smiths, that her sisters could be.... That was a bit of a stretch, she supposed, but there was no harm in trying. She was soon put to work doing the most undesirable tasks, watching her male peers take part in work she was never allowed to do herself.
Quirren told her they were trying to break her, to chase her out, and that perseverance would win the day. With this in mind, Mizao took to her work with enthusiasm. She could not let them break her, could not let them think they were anywhere NEAR breaking her. She volunteered for those tasks every apprentice seemed to despise. In the end it worked, and she began receiving invitations to help with more interesting work, to start really learning the craft. Several of her female peers had already left the Hall, sick of the work they referred to as 'drudgery' and sure they would never be allowed to do anything else, but her strategy had impressed a number of the more progressive masters in the Hall, including Master Dehlia, one of the very rare female master smiths.
The woman took Mizao under her wing, impressed by the young woman's fortitude, which excited Mizao immensely. All of Dehlia's work was beautiful of course, but the woman specialized in crafting jewelry. Oh, and what lovely, exquisite jewelry it was, the stuff of fantasy for a girl like Mizao. Due to her work, Dehlia had many connections with the most important people on Pern, creating beautiful custom orders for Lady Holders and Master Crafters and Weyrwomen all. Mizao was honored to have caught Dehlia's attention and worked even harder to prove she was worthy of the honor, and to hopefully learn how to be even a fraction as skilled as the older woman.
She excelled at delicate work that many of her male peers found it hard to accomplish due to their larger hands and thicker fingers, her own hands dainty and elegant, with slim, agile fingers, and with Dehlia's careful instruction, she grew even better at it. However, a choice has presented itself to her in the form of a Greenrider on Search from Mavros. When the dragon arrived, Mizao did not even mean to present herself to be Searched, she had just never seen a dragon before (besides flying high overhead) and her curiosity got the best of her. She wasn't expecting the Green to look right at her, or the rider to approach her and ask if she had ever considered the life of a dragonrider. She hadn't, of course... not really. She may have played at it as a child once or twice, as most Pernese children did, but to seriously consider the path? No, never.
What followed was a flurry of confusion and conflict. She felt obligated to return to her family, to her father, before accepting the offer to Stand. The dragonrider graciously offered to take her home for the conversation if she was seriously considering it and away they went. The flight was exhilarating, Between was absolutely terrifying, and then there it was, her home. She was in complete awe, and if she had doubts before about her decision, those doubts had fallen away. Still, she had to tell her father where she was going.
The man was furious. He forbade her from going, berated her about how she was NOT throwing away all her smith training for nothing but a rogue Weyr that had no right to even exist, and demanded she return to the crafthall at once. For the first time in her life, she told her father 'no'. The man was speechless, and she informed him with only the slightest waver to her voice that she was an adult now, and that she was capable of making her own choices. Saronel gave her one final warning, that if she left on that dragon, she should never come back. She hesitated, but the brief look of triumph in her father's eyes was enough to push her to follow her own heart for once in her life. So she turned her back on him, and she came to Mavros.
