"A man not willing to fight for what he wants,
deserves what he gets."
NAME: Treyjen
RANK: Sea Trader/Pirate, Captain of the Storm’s Eye
AGE: 32
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bisexual, preference for females
PETS: Gold Seaspitter Pearl
APPEARANCE:
Treyjen is of decently tall at 6’1”, tanned from spending the vast majority of his life outdoors, at sea specifically. He is broad of shoulder and chest, muscular and fit from the very physical life of a sailor. Numerous scars mar his skin, large and small, from all of the various fights he has ever been in, which have been many. His dark brown hair is kept short, a scruffy, short beard always present on his face. His eyes are blue, amusingly similar to the sea, set below thick brows. His right ear is pierced, the result of a dare in his younger years that he’s actually grown rather fond of. He enjoys wearing jewelry, rings and pendants, both to show off and to dare some poor soul to try to steal them from him. After all, who can blame him for beating the ever living shit out of someone who tried to steal from him? He owns several expensive outfits that allow him to blend well with the higher ranking crowd and generally helps to set up the illusion that he is something of a noble sort who can certainly be trusted. On land, he prefers to dress up, though on his ship he rarely wears more than trousers, sometimes his boots depending on the day and what he’s doing.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Wildly independent, Treyjen cannot stand being compared to others or living under anyone’s direction. He values freedom above all else in his life, no restrictions, and he is willing to fight and die for that freedom, but not before he takes a few people with him. He has never been a follower, and never will be, though he never set out to be a leader either. He has major problems with ‘proper protocol’ and moronic formalities, though he’s able to force himself through them if it serves a greater purpose. Treyjen really doesn’t give a rat’s ass about anyone not on his crew (save very few exceptions); if he’s being nice to you and you’re not crew, you can be 99% sure he’s manipulating you. Treyjen is willing to go to great lengths to get the things he wants in life, really nothing is beneath him. He has a number of masks he wears for different occasions, taking on personality traits as they suit him and the situation at hand. He can be a polite gentleman if it gets the job done, though he’ll be inwardly heaving the whole time.
The true Treyjen is brash, crude, unapologetic. He says what he thinks, brutally honest, and if you can’t handle that then you’re welcome to leave, or start a fight. Treyjen loves a good brawl simply for the sake of it. A major thrill-seeker, he never backs down from any challenge, no matter how stupid or dangerous. He lives for challenge, for thrills, and finds life incredibly boring without them. Largely selfish and entirely hedonistic, Treyjen lives for himself. He overindulges, lives in the moment and acts on whatever impulsive whim has overtaken him until he grows bored and finds something more interesting to do. Drunk more often than not, he is surprisingly talented at keeping control of his movements even under the influence of vast amounts of alcohol, though any amount of control he has over the personality he wishes to show others disappears completely, revealing himself as he truly is.
Obviously, as a pirate, he has rather loose morals. Those who are strong enough and smart enough to take what they want, should, in his opinion. If you’re too weak or too stupid to protect what’s yours, then you don’t deserve what you have. Stealing, therefore, has become second nature to him. Although he prefers to take what he wants peaceably, given the slightest provocation he will happily enough fight for it. He isn’t above killing someone for something he wants badly enough, but that’s only as a last resort, if he can’t talk or beat it out of you. He thinks very highly of himself, both his looks and his abilities, and often becomes overconfident and underestimates others. He is very much a gambling man, willing to take big risks for big rewards, and has a tendency for violence when things don’t go his way. He also isn’t at all above cheating, at anything and everything.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Charismatic and confident, Treyjen makes it easy for others to follow him, even when he’s not trying. He could talk the legs off a tunnelsnake, and the friendly manner he often presents when working as a trader draws people in and makes them feel comfortable, and more likely to spend more. Outgoing and personable, he highly enjoys socializing and is quite observant, noticing small details quickly, even while playing a crowd. This he taught himself over a number of turns, how to look without looking and draw people’s attention to only what he wants them to see. His skills at sleight of hand make for entertaining tricks with friends, and less entertaining tricks with strangers. Bold and fearless, he isn’t afraid to meet any challenge head on.
He is fiercely loyal to those close to him; he would kill without hesitation for any member of his crew, and they for him, for his loyalty and willingness to do whatever he asks of his crew himself inspires their loyalty in return. A champion of freedom, he is always willing to hear out the opinions of his crew and to let a vote decide on many of the larger decisions that affect them all, making it clear that everyone on his ship, in his fleet, are equals and that no man (or woman) is better than any other. Strangely enough, despite his womanizing ways, he believes women and men should be on equal footing, and weak women who meekly play their submissive role in life are good for little else than a fun night in bed. The women that keep him coming back to them have their own minds and their own wills. He always pushed his sister Nalyra to be her own person and is incredibly proud of the woman she’s become. Now that he has a daughter he plans to teach her the same thing.
He is incredibly adaptable; a quick study and fast learner, he picks up new skills easily and isn’t afraid of hard work, so long as he can grab a drink afterward. Despite what many of his actions may suggest, he is actually very intelligent. He has a shrewd mind for numbers and business ventures, though he has for the most part left his life as a trader behind him. Incredibly persistent (others may call it stubborn), Treyjen is willing to go to great lengths to get the things he wants, and once he decides on a course of action he is very hard to sway. Even as a pirate, his word is his bond; though he may lie (a lot), he does not make promises lightly, for he takes them very seriously and becomes very angry with himself if he is unable to fulfill a promise he makes, no matter who it was made to, or how simple it was.

He knows Gildrey, but left him behind when he stole the Storm's Eye and doesn't ever expect to see him again, as he has no plans to ever return to Tillek since it was the place he was born and the place his father and the majority of his father's crew calls home (and therefore visit frequently).
HISTORY:
Treyjen was the third born son of Treylok and Jenara, after his brother Jeylokar, 8 years his senior, and Reyloran, 5 years his senior. Jeylokar was his father’s clear favorite, the perfect son in all that entailed for the son of a Sea Trader. He did well with his figures, a quick learner, was charismatic and diplomatic, clever and creative when it came to selling wares and making the most of each trade deal. On deck he worked hard, at whatever job he was put to, even the most undesirable. Reyloran was Jeylokar’s shadow, always trying to be like him, to impress their father, to gain the favor their older brother had, he simply didn’t learn as fast, wasn’t quite clever enough, and his kind heart had him often all but giving away wares, which earned him plenty of their father and mother’s ire both. When one of their mother's brothers, a Fisher, offered to take the boy on, for despite his lack of trading skills, he was more than handy enough on a ship, their father was willing enough to send him off, leaving Treyjen alone in Jeylokar’s long shadow.
Treyjen saw how his brother Reyloran tried and failed to be the perfect son their father wanted, and he didn’t entirely care to follow his example. He did not want to be his perfect older brother, he frankly didn’t give a damn about his father’s approval or lack thereof. He was not going to waste his life trying to be something or someone he wasn’t, he was going to be his own person and live for himself. Ironically, though he never tried to gain his father’s approval, he managed to win it anyway. Treylok’s third son was much better suited to the life of a Trader than his second son had been. Treyjen was much more like his eldest brother than he realized. Instead of making him happy, however, it frustrated Treyjen to no end. He wanted to be his own person, not his brother’s clone. He acted out in order to differentiate himself and his brother, quickly earning his father’s scorn and his mother’s concern. They tried to talk to him about his outbursts, getting into pointless fistfights and stealing trinkets, but he had found his out, the thing that would make him unique when compared to Jeylokar.
As this behavior continued, he learned how to be quite the adept pickpocket. Sleight of hand became second nature and drunken brawls were second on the fun-o-meter only to taking some pretty thing to bed with him. He quickly became selfish, hedonistic, and his relationship with his family deteriorated quickly with all but his baby sister. From the time she was born, a final surprise addition to the family, Treyjen found himself drawn to teach and protect Nalyra, to make sure she could fend for herself and didn’t become some weak, dependent female, as so many of them were. The two were thick as thieves, as the saying goes, though after Treyjen’s behavior took a turn for the worse their parents tried to keep her away from him and his influence; it hardly worked. The only reason his father kept him on was because he was actually useful, both on the ship and as a trader, when he wasn’t too drunk to work.
Jeylokar was wed to another Sea Trader captain’s daughter, the arrangement bringing both small fleets together and increasing business. The thought of marriage was a rather frightening concept to the young Treyjen. He couldn’t imagine being tied down to someone like that. Jeylokar and his new wife, Yvinnia, didn’t even seem to get along that great. He seemed to expect her to be more submissive, but she was quite a headstrong girl and they argued often in the beginning. Treyjen found a ridiculous amount of amusement in this, though Nalyra scolded him for it. He outright told his father he’d best not try to force some marriage onto him, luckily, in his father’s own words, he had no intention of insulting anyone by trying to force him onto their poor, unfortunate daughters. It still makes him laugh to think about.
Charismatic and more laidback than his father and older brother, he made friends easily, knowing how to relax and have fun, and often jumping into brawls in favor of crew members when they all went out drinking. While Treylok and Jeylokar demanded obedience and commanded great respect from most of the crew, Treyjen was able to make them feel at ease, like he was one of them rather than above them, and demanded no obedience or formality between them; in fact he insisted upon no formality at all. He was content to work with them and joke with them, and when they weren’t working, to drink with them and fight beside them. It was through this easy friendship that he gained a great many followers, despite never actually trying to get people to follow him. A great number of the younger men that worked aboard their fleet called for his promotion as a captain when the fleet expanded by one brand new ship, small, but faster than any other in their fleet that now included 6 ships.
Treyjen would just as well NOT be a captain, and he told those pushing for it as much, and that his father and the other captains would never agree to it regardless. Much to his surprise, they did. The five men who captained the other ships approached him about captaining the new ship. He could tell his father had been overruled in the decision by the look on his face and how little he spoke, allowing Jeylokar to do most of the talking. Well, why not? He wouldn’t be under his father’s direct supervision anymore and could run his ship however he liked, after all. He accepted the post, and Jeylokar informed him that night that he had suggest to their father that it might keep him busy enough to stay out of trouble if he captained his own ship, and that he clearly had the ability to do so. It didn’t sit well with him that his brother was trying to pile responsibility onto him to keep him straight, but for the time being he kept it to himself, still eager for the opportunity and the freedom it would allow him. So at the age of 22 he became Captain of the Storm’s Eye.
Those who petitioned for him to be captain shortly became his crew, including his little sister. He did quite well as captain of his own ship, continuing to keep up his casual friendships with his crew, never wanting to them to see him as they saw his father and brother, as someone above them. His being a captain didn’t much change his behavior, but the other captains tolerated it because he did well and gave them no reason to complain on the business front. After his 25th turn, Nalyra came to him crying and angry, telling him that their father was arranging for her to marry some other captain’s son, to expand their fleet by three ships. He demanded his father call it off, that Nalyra didn’t want it, but the older man only waved him off, saying that Jeylokar had done his duty and wed and that Nalyra would as well. Furious, he did the first thing that came to mind. He took his sister, his ship, and his crew, and he left. A few of the other ships in the fleet attempted to follow him, but the Storm’s Eye was the fastest ship in the fleet and they soon outpaced them, forced them to turn back. Nalyra told him he was crazy, but he had never felt so exhilarated as he watched the rest of the fleet dwindle into the distance. Freedom was his, Nalyra’s, the entire crew's.
For the next turn they traveled the seas, taking on small trading jobs, taking on the occasional passenger from time to time, and staying far away from his father’s normal trading routes. Before the turn had ended, word of their stolen ship had spread, however, and avoiding major ports became a necessity. Their business dwindled, and Treyjen held a meeting of the crew to decide what they would do to survive. A number of solutions were suggested, but it was Nalyra who offered the possibility of piracy. Treyjen joked that it seemed his bad influence had gotten to her after all before taking the suggestion more seriously. There were some that were against the idea, but after some discussion the vast majority agreed to the course of action. Those who refused to turn pirate were allowed to leave the next time they came to port, and then the fun began.
They already knew the trade routes, those heavily traveled and those more out of the way. Both had their merits and risks, but Treyjen found the challenge of piracy to be just what he needed in his life. Crew and passengers of the ships they ran down and boarded were given the option to join them or take a long swim. They became rather adept at their chosen ‘craft’, so to speak, and as they gained crew, they expanded to captured ships, keeping them for themselves. The first ship they kept was the Sea Dragon, given to his best friend Karosh to captain. The man had always been his strongest supporter, and the first to petition for his promotion to captain. The third ship they took on was the Blazing Star. He allowed a vote to determine its captain, rather than appointing someone himself, for there were a number of candidates he was considering. In the end it went to a man named Nitran. Unfortunately, the ship was abandoned when Thread returned unexpectedly only a few months after its acquisition; the Fall had killed a great number of the crew from every ship and they no longer had enough hands to handle three ships. As Nitran had perished in the Fall, they cannibalized his ship and the remnants of his crew were assimilated back onto the Storm’s Eye and the Sea Dragon.
Shortly after the devastating Fall, the two ships traveled to one of their western ring island safe havens only to find it occupied by dragons. They presented as the Traders they once were, trading and selling with the Mavrosites. The new Weyrhold, they learned, was founded without the approval of the Council of Weyrleaders, and its rough start put it at quite the disadvantage. The place was remote, cut off, and Treyjen and his crew saw in them an opportunity for trade, shelter, and the occasional landfall for rest and relaxation. Mavros became something of a home for the crew, a place to return to without the risk many of the other major Holds and Weyrs held for them. Some of the crew found wives in the fishing folk of Mavros, or in the lower caverns of the Weyr, and slowly the Weyrhold gained their loyalty where once they had none. The various plights and hardships Mavros faced, and their defiance of the Council of Weyrleaders, only furthered their support of what soon became known around Pern as the Rogue Weyrhold.
They gained a third ship once more only a turn ago, the Bright Wing, which Nalyra was granted by vote, rather to Treyjen’s surprise. He hadn’t expected the crew to vote a woman in as captain, seeing the vast majority of them were men, though he wasn’t at all displeased with the development. He’s rather proud of the woman his sister has become. Recently, while the small fleet was sheltering in a sea cave, they discovered a nest of small eggs near the water’s edge, in a dip of rock filled with sand. A number of the eggs were broken, but the eggs that remained weren’t like any eggs anyone on the crew had ever seen before. They were perfectly round, and the largest one had a slight sheen to it. Nalyra remarked that they looked like giant pearls. Treyjen had them gathered up to take back to Mavros, wondering if they might be identified there, and betting on the fact that they could be valuable.
