S’fin patted his green’s side as he slid from her back, careful not to jumble the basket he was carrying too much. Precious cargo and all that. He had landed on the ledge the watchdragon had indicated to lead to the Weyrleader’s weyr. Weyrleader! His little brother! It was about as crazy as crazy could get. He’d been helping to search for the poisoner, this rogue dragonrider who was supposedly hiding away in the snowy wastes of the southern continent who had killed two of Mavros’s goldriders and two greenriders as well.
The man eluded them even a turn and a half later and most of the heavy effort had been given up, though there was still a watch and a sweep over the wastes every few days. S’fin had been determined to remain a part of the efforts to bring the Weyr that had finally given his brother a chance to Impress some justice. Even though the other Weyrs had withdrawn help from Mavros, this rogue dragonrider and his supposed following could be a threat to all of Pern.
When he found out A’zael had become WEYRLEADER he put in a transfer request, but it was delayed for various reasons. The Weyrs were always so hesitant of sending any help at Mavros these days, it was rather frustrating. So they wanted to do things their own way. Why did they need a sharding Lord Holder? How would that make their situation better? He agreed with the small Weyr on their decision to go it alone. He had thought about simply leaving Southern and going, what could they really do if he just left? He hadn’t been spending much time at the Weyr these days anyway due to trying to chase down this renegade.
Finally his transfer was approved, but not before he’d found some strange eggs whilst sweeping the edge of the snowy wastes. He’d landed to give Rusath a bit of a rest and she’d actually been the one to find them. So he’d gathered them up in his jacket and flown home. He wasn’t sure he wanted to tell anyone about them, but the next day he’d gotten his transfer cleared and here he was, his mystery eggs in tow.
He would have said they were firelizard eggs, but firelizard eggs were never found in such cold regions, and besides they seemed much too small. For all he knew they were firelizard eggs and some silly Green could have laid them there, but Rusath quickly put that thought down. Even firelizards, even greens, were not stupid enough to lay their eggs in such a cold climate. He gave her that and apologized for thinking any less of her color, even if he had only been thinking of firelizards and not dragons. But Rusath was touchy like that sometimes. Honestly she’d been rather proddy lately anyway and he was beginning to wonder about the last time she rose. He thought she might be due soon. But anyway.
He stepped into the weyr to find it rather empty, “Hello!?”
A’zael had been laying on his bed, resting, but not sleeping. Too many thoughts racing about in his head. He wondered how any Weyrleader managed to sleep with so much to think about all the sharding time. His eyes opened as he thought he heard someone call ‘hello’. He listened for a moment and heard footsteps. Someone was definitely here. Wonderful. He sat up and walked out to the main part of his weyr, where Fath generally slept. He stopped dead when he saw who it was, “Wh… S’fin?” He hadn’t seen his brother since Fath hatched.
“Hey there little brother! You look… ah… well….”
“Yeah, thanks for that. Like I don’t know how I look,” he replied tersely, “What… what are you doing here?”
“And I thought you’d be glad to see me. Well I suppose I can go back to Southern, just thought Mavros could use another rider.”
A’zael stared blankly at him, “Huh?”
“Oh right, you probably do things all official now huh, Weyrleader,” he pulled out his transfer papers and held them out. A’zael took a moment to take them and look them over.
“Transfer? You… you’re staying here?” he seemed to perk up at the idea that his brother was here to stay.
“Sure am. I couldn’t resist after I’d heard your Fath caught the gold… among other things I’ve heard. I want to help you, A’zael,” this last was said in all seriousness. It was no secret that Mavros was struggling, though it was doing a deal better than it was a turn ago, “I know I’m just a greenrider but… every rider counts, right?”
A’zael threw his arms around his brother in a hug he had been needing for a very long time, “Shards and shells, S’fin, you’re not just a greenrider! You know I don’t think like that!” He reluctantly let go and stepped back, “Faranth knows how much I need… someone right now….”
S’fin took on a rather sad expression to see his brother this way. He could not remember a time his brother had seemed so beaten down, not ever. He sighed, “This is too much for you. You’re too young.” It was not criticism, it was truth, plain and simple, and all that A’zael had been thinking every day since Fath had caught Zalmaranth. “But… from the looks of it you’re holding together… holding everything together. With everything that’s been happening I don’t see how you could do more.” His brow furrowed, “What do you mean you need someone? The riders of Fath’s clutchmates, you had a few friends there yes? Rau included.”
A’zael grimaced, “Rau… Rau’s been a wreck. Reckless, heartbroken idiot. He got himself and Pallath injured during Threadfall because he decided she could handle a full fall. It was all premeditated though don’t worry!” He waved his hand emphatically, as if that made it better! “He’s… fine. They weren’t hurt too bad,” he added after a moment of S’fin’s concerned look.
S’fin shook his head, “Well, we can talk all about the troubles of the Weyr later. I brought along a present that… may or may not help boost morale a bit!”
A’zael’s eyebrow rose, “May or may not?”
“Well… I’m not entirely sure what they are…,” he held the basked of eggs out before him and A’zael peered in.
“Firelizards?” he counted how many there were.
“I don’t think so… they’re too small, and I found them at the edge of the snowy wastes. Firelizards are never found in such cold places. Shards, nothing ever lays their eggs in such cold places. It’s just strange,” he peered down at the eggs thoughtfully.
“What if they’re dangerous?” A’zael peered a bit more warily at them.
“Well… I did say ‘may not’….”
“Shards, S’fin!” A’zael scratched his head, wondering what to do with the things when he swore one of them shook. He looked quickly to S’fin and back to the eggs, “Did you see that?”
“It moved! Oh, they can’t be hatching already!” S’fin looked around as if someone might assure him they weren’t.
“Shard it all! Now what!?” A’zael glanced around as well, more so looking for an idea as to what to do with these mystery creatures who might very well post a threat to them all for all either he or S’fin knew, “You should have given them to a beastcrafter! Maybe they would know what they are!”
A small muzzle poked through a hole in one egg and disappeared inside again. “Ah! Did you see it! What did it look like?”
“Shells if I know, S’fin, it was a nose! It looked… kinda like a firelizard… I don’t know! Come here!” A’zael turned and led the way to his office area, “Here, set the basket on the table. I’ll tell Fath to alert anyone interested in… a pet to come and try for one. I sure hope they aren’t dangerous S’fin or I swear…!” Fath! Tell everyone there is a clutch of… ‘lizards hatching and to come to my weyr if they’re interested in one! That nose had certainly LOOKED very firelizard-ish, so calling them lizards was as good a name as any. Most would probably assume they were firelizards and they might be in for quite a surprise. A moment later Fath’s excited mindvoice would enter any and all minds he could reach, telling them of a lizard hatching in his A’zael’s weyr even as he himself flew from his perch outside the hatching cavern to see what A’zael was talking about. “If they’re anything like firelizards they’ll need food to bond with someone… uhm….” He turned about once, sure he had some leftover food somewhere… on his desk!
He brought the plate of half eaten fish and fruit over and set it a short distance from the basket as more eggs began to rock and crack. The egg with the whole which a nose had poked through earlier fell apart to reveal a pale Brown, red eyes whirling as he creeled hungrily. A’zael and S’fin stared at the creature that had appeared. It looked… vaguely like a firelizard, but…. It had fur? A full mane around its neck and down its spine. There was also some strange… thing on its forehead that shimmered like a jewel. “What on Pern is it?”
“I don’t know but it’s hungry, here feed it Azzy,” S’fin shoved a piece of fish into his hands and pushed him toward the thing.
Instinctively A’zael offered the hungry hatchling food, which he promptly took and looked up at A’zael as if he were the greatest thing on Pern. “Oh… oh, no what did you make me do!? I don’t need something ELSE to take care of!”
“Aww, c’mon Azzy, he’s so cute! And you did say you needed someone,” S’fin grinned and reached forward to pick up the little Brown furry thing, petting its furry mane to which he received a croon of appreciation. Fath had also arrived in the weyr and his head was peering at them curiously through the doorway. Whatisit, Mine? S’fin looked over, “Hey there Fath, you sure got big since the last time I saw you.”
“Augh, S’fin!” he looked at the little creature in his brother’s hand with a mixture of dismay, curiosity, and maybe a bit of ohmyfaranthitssocute. He threw his hands up in surrender, there was no undoing the bond now. He sure hoped others would start arriving before S’fin made him bond to the whole bunch!
OWNER: A’zael
COLOR: Brown
APPEARANCE: This Brown is medium-sized for his color; he’ll be 17 inches at full growth and is starting at 3 ½ inches. His main hide color is a light, pale brown, the color of creamy klah with sandy golden-tan markings on the underside of his legs, belly, tail, along his jaw, and a sort of ‘blaze’ that runs up between his eyes from his nose. His gem is a few shades more orange than amber and his fur is a pale chocolaty brown that fades into a dark red-brown on his chest and tail plume.
PERSONALITY: Playful, Loyal, Disobedient
This Brown is like a miniature puppy. He is always willing to play, whether it be something very canine-like, like fetch, or hiding things on you to see if you can find them, or bringing you presents, which may or may not have been stolen from other people’s weyrs. He is entirely devoted His and while he enjoys attention from others, he would much rather be getting attention from His instead. He is likely to follow His around ‘like a puppy’ everywhere they go. While he is intelligent enough to be trained to do things, if he doesn’t WANT to do something then he simply won’t, like stay when he would much rather follow you around.
Simply make a post of your characters getting Fath’s message and coming to A’zael’s weyr to see the eggs, maybe have them pick up some fish or fruit to feed them. I will then reply shortly hatching out your gemglider and having them approach your characters and take food or whatever~ Make sure you let me know what number you want if you haven’t already!
