A'zael, No'va

A’zael couldn’t help but wonder how many of the current class might show up today. It was the first leadership lesson for the Night and Day weyrlings, lessons normally reserved for bronzeriders and brownriders, lessons he had so far left to B’rax to teach until the subject turned to Weyrleadership. But he had told the older rider he wanted to open up the first couple months of lessons to the blue and greenriders as well, seeing as he had a greenrider for a wingsecond. It would be helpful for them to take these classes as well if that was a position they were interested in. B’rax, though tolerant of his progressive ideas, had no want to take part in this newest venture of stomping on tradition with him and had told him that if that was what he wanted then he could teach the classes himself. B’rax didn’t seem upset at the idea, didn’t try to dissuade him from it, he simply didn’t seem to want to participate in it.
So… A’zael told him he would teach the classes then. Only, some of the stuff he had never actually experienced himself because, well, he’d never been a wingsecond before. He obviously knew basically what they did, as he delegated things to them in his Wing, and he had also learned the basics of it in his own leadership lessons, but he hadn’t particularly paid much attention back then. So he’d invited Rau to help him, to not only fill in any information about being a wingsecond he might miss, but also to maybe help any blueriders and greenriders in the class feel more at ease being there, and show them it was possible if they wanted it. Under the right wingleader anyway.
“This should be interesting?” Rau’s voice broke him from his thoughts.
“Not nervous, are you?” A’zael raised a brow at him.
“Of course not. I’ve been whipping our blues and greens into shape for a while now. This can’t be much different,” Rau grinned.
“We’ll have to keep an eye on any that show up, see if they have the right potential so I can tap them into Gale Wing, where they won’t be wasted.” It was hardly a secret that his Wing was the most progressive. While he didn’t really think of B’rax as colorist… he was more of a traditionalist. And X’ar… the man was dipping into colorist even if he didn’t particularly realize it himself. He wasn’t half as bad as K’rin, but it was there. He didn’t even promote brownriders to wingsecond if there was a bronzerider available instead, regardless of experience or ability. He realized from a traditional mindset it made sense to give bronzeriders leadership experience where you could, so they were more ready to be made wingleaders, or even weyrleaders, but it still grated to think about deserving riders being passed over simply because of the color of their dragon.
Rau shook his head, sitting back on A’zael’s desk as they waited for the first to arrive, “Already thinking about that?”
“They’ll begin flying with the Queen’s Wing this month, Rau. We don’t have much longer to consider their Wing placements,” A’zael explained, “And we’ll get to see what they’re really made of in the air soon enough.”
Rau waved his hand, “Alright, whatever, I’ll leave that mess to you. That’s above my station.” He grinned again, clearly teasing.
A’zael snorted softly, “You just don’t want more work.”
“You give me plenty enough as it is- ah, our first arrival!” Rau cut himself short as a weyrling with brownrider knots stopped at the doorway, peering inside somewhat hesitantly. “Come on in! Grab a seat wherever you’d like!” The young man seemed to relax at the warm invitation and came inside to take a seat nearest the door. Rau chuckled, murmuring, “Promising.”
“Rau,” A’zael lowered his voice slightly in an exasperated tone. He had told D'rew to make sure the entire class knew they were welcome to attend today’s lesson if they wanted, but of course the brownriders and bronzeriders were required to come regardless. Another arrival skidded to a halt outside the door, nearly panting from apparently having sprinted the entire way. As he entered the room without any hesitation that the first boy had shown, it seemed he was also a brownrider.
“I’m not late? Great!” No’va plopped down into a chair somewhere in the middle of the table.
“Make yourself at home, No’va,” A’zael replied with some amusement. It was still strange to see how the boy had grown from his trip back in time. He still remembered him being much younger.
No’va grinned, “Thanks! Uh... sir?” He seemed to think twice and add on after a moment, unsure if he should be so familiar with the Weyrleader. While they had met a few times on account of his father, it wasn't like they really knew each other well, nor did he want anyone wondering why he was being so casual with the Weyrleader and asking questions he would then have to answer or dodge or lie about. He glanced at Rau then, “Who’s that?”
Rau opened his mouth to introduce himself but A’zael held up a hand, “We’ll do introductions once everyone is here. We don’t know all of your names either.”
"Well they all know each other. Maybe they should just introduce themselves to us as they come in to speed things up, then when they're all here we can start," Rau suggested.
"Hm... reasonable," A'zael nodded, "You two, your names and the names of your dragons, please."
"But you already-" No'va cut himself off, and decided to just go with it, "Uh, No'va of brown Alduntulath. I just call him Aldy though. You'd know him as the brown with all the black on him. Cool, right?"
Rau was doing his best not to laugh at the boy's enthusiasm and just nodded in agreement until the other boy spoke.
"Erm... T'ren, of brown Ralecheth." He clearly still wasn't completely comfortable in the Weyrleader's office.
