Dylan Kingwell
NAME: Delvirin
RANK: Blooded Son of Tidewalk Hold
AGE: 13 Turns
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Unsure
DRAGON: --
PETS: --
APPEARANCE:
“He looks just like his mother!” A phrase as common as air for the young Viri. Soft brown hair frames his head, though of course it is groomed by only the finest staff. Befitting the likely future Lord of Tidewalk (blegh). His round features and wide, green-hazel eyes only strengthen ties to his mother, and to the anguish of the young teenager his build has not grown to be less effeminate. Of course, he’s thirteen, and such a young lad lacks an outside perspective. His expressions are highly animated and whatever he’s feeling is crystal clear. This expressive-ness lends him a certain boyish charm, should he figure out how to put it to use. He has begun to somewhat shoot up in height, though he doesn’t realize it, standing at 4’8” and quickly outgrowing his night-wear. It is still unclear whether a spring in height will mean he will be tall. He is often seen in well-crafted clothing only befitting his Blooded status; clothing that he absolutely loathes as it brings him more attention.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
As he endured more pressures and childhood teasing, Delvirin retreated into a shell. Indeed, whether nature or nurture, Viri is incredibly shy and actively avoids his peers. Even when he once yearned to engage with lower-born children, he quickly found that they were cruel and unforgiving. He much prefers the company of books, simultaneously longing for fulfilling friendships with others and being rather terrified of his fellow child. This is his teenage conflict, brewing as he becomes more confused with how he feels. Does he have someone to turn to in regards to his feelings? He doesn’t seem to think so, seeing his parents put more and more responsibility on him.
You won’t see him asking for help very often, though. Though he will happily entrust those he sees as friends with bits of himself, he refuses to burden others with his emotional issues and doubts. A certain part of him wishes to remain strong in the face of adversity and to defend everything he loves, but it’s tough. As he really lacks a spine of his own, he tends to parrot whatever beliefs his elders have, and changes to please whoever he’s around at any given moment. Viri doesn’t stand for what he believes in, despite having the childish black-and-white morals that one may expect. No matter what, Viri follows command and will crumple in the face of a stronger personality.
Having grown into the comfort and attentions as being his father’s only son comes with, Viri can come off as rather indignant and impatient. None of it is born with any intention or malice, but he is used to being waited on. He is always thankful of any adult who works for the Blooded family, but he often complains about various things- like, for instance, why he looks so much like his mother. He is teased immensely for it and it annoys him, but doesn’t quite get that his father never had a say in that. Viri is somewhat disconnected from the reality that many Pernese face, the reality of food and whether one may live. He has never understood what it is like to be hungry for long and dragonriding seems to be the brave and romantic idea that the songs paint it as. This separation from reality makes him incredibly naive and easy to fool.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Though he wishes not to lead, Delvirin is an incredibly bright boy with a rather positive look on the world. He believes in the good of people and is willing to give out benefit of the doubt that is as abundant as air. His compassion knows no bounds and while not being an empath, he is naturally empathetic to his fellows. Though he may not understand the struggles of the lower born, he will never judge anyone simply by the accident of their birth. Everyone is a precious life and after all, he believes in the good of man. Only time will tell if maturity embitters him or brings out the best of these qualities. He will be strongly opposed to perceived injustice and will begin to notice the less fortunate within Tidewalk. This empathy also makes him more understanding of the people of Mavros, though this is supported by Tidewalk’s support of the Weyrhold. He will always give to a person in need.
Rather intelligent, he is often found within records, hungering for knowledge. Indeed, Viri is a curious boy and seeks to fully understand everything around him. If anything, he is very good at his studies. So long as his uncle isn’t around, Viri can sit down and concentrate on whatever is asked of him. His marks in schooling will always be superbly high, and his mental health can be best monitored by any stark dips. He expects a lot of himself in regards to education, and to see his father and mother pleased by it is everything. Of course, Delvish would further love to see him apply his knowledge and accept his place in life, but nevertheless. Viri is very good with his manners, always sure to follow the social guidelines of his caste and remember his ‘please and thank-you’s. He does not necessarily shy away from trying new things, though being sheltered makes him approach some unfamiliar things with a certain caution.
There is a bolder side to Delvirin that only comes out once in a blue moon...and that blue moon is a brownrider, with the moon tending to crash into Pern’s surface. Novarel was the guy- the man, the myth, the hero. Alongside him, Viri is much more assertive, but that is yet another personality change as a result of another’s presence. Perhaps the shy lad could learn to embrace this side of him a little more without his uncle? Who knows!

HISTORY:
In the height of the summer, Delvish would see his first child born- and to his luck, a son. After an interim period of a few months, mother and father could breathe a sigh of relief at being more sure he would live. Delvirin was his name, though Irrina would quickly begin calling him Viri. Delvish wasn’t angered by it at all, but always called him by his full name lest he never learn it. Being the first -and only- child brought with it great attention by everyone. This was, after all, the future Lord of Tidewalk should Delvish ascend. Which everyone expected. His parents were, for all it was worth, loving and attentive parents. Just three scant Turns later his first sister would be born, which would take some of his mother’s attention. Never fear! There were plenty of adults around to shower Viri with attention.
Which he would grow to hate. Delvirin would develop a better relationship with his books and hides, very quickly grasping the concept of language and reading. Not at any superbly high level, but he consumed knowledge like it was sweets. He began somewhat adventurous, though careful to not push the bounds of rules that were quickly set. His ‘no’ phase was rather quick, to the relief of his caretakers. However, this celebration was brief as he retreated to the opposite end of the scale. Timid from the get-go. Still, he was allowed to be a child. His early days were long and fun, especially when Novarel came around.
Novarel was everything for young Viri. He was a bastion of who to be, everything Viri wasn’t and wished he was. Nova was the fifth son, allowed to do what he wanted. Delvirin would come to understand fully why that was such a coveted position. Delvish encouraged this relationship only to bolster his shy son. However, this would stretch into making trouble. Viri hated getting caught, but the thrill of it was energizing. Delvish would shake his head, and it didn’t help that Irrina didn’t have the heart to chide the boy very much. They both knew that he was a good kid, but that pesky Novarel.
Viri’s contact with other children was limited, and he was rather alienated from his sisters. When he did interact, he found that his young cousins loved to tease. His feminine qualities would hang off his back for a long time, and even today he wishes to look more like a man. He also lacked a certain connection with outside children the rare times he would meet any, making him rather frightened of the prospect of interacting with new people. Still, he was taught to be courteous to others, so that’s what he would do.
His teachers would be pleased by his ability to hunker down and be studious; Delvish would frequently receive word of his good behavior. Which would only make him more frustrated with the switch he would see when the boy was around Novarel. Still, it was his only hope to make the boy open up. He instilled that Delvirin’s place in life was important, and he would be prepped to be named Heir. Viri hated this idea, wanting nothing but to read his scrolls and be free. Why couldn’t his father just have a second son? Wasn’t that easy? They were questions that were rather unfair on Delvish to answer, but that was Viri’s perspective.
Other than that, no particular drama plagued his life. Thread began to fall when he was seven and so he would not remember a whole lot of life before, except he would absorb growing frustrations with the Weyr that was supposed to protect them. Viri’s world was literature and the developing resentment of the responsibilities that were entrusted to the chance of his birth. The bright spots were provided by Novarel, and the moments of quality time that he got with his parents. His eighth Turn would see the birth of his second sister, though this was different as he remembered it. It was...weird. He remembered seeing the squishy child and the disappointment of a daughter. Well, not his parent’s disappointment. As far as they were concerned, they had their Heir.
When he was twelve, all of his brathood freetime was taken and replaced with growing tutoring on how to run a Hold. This was when the majority of contention between father and son began, and when the unfair questions began assaulting Delvish. It was made even worse when Novarel was accepted to Search and allowed to go. He was beside the older lad when the green Searched him; Novarel had the capacity to Impress! And...so did Viri? ’You’re a tad undercooked, but you could find a dragon of your own!’ The news made Delvirin’s heart soar. He’d never dreamed too much of dragons, but it was a thing Novarel wanted so much...and so he wanted it too. But something would aim and strike his soaring heart.
“No.”
An arrow flew true and hit that hope. Delvish refused to allow him to go, and Viri’s perspective painted this as utterly unfair. He wouldn’t have the guts to show it much, but he would become angry at his father. And he watched Novarel depart with tears in his eyes, wishing nothing more but to join his uncle. He would retreat into a much harder shell that even his mother couldn’t draw him out of. And even his mother came to calling him by his full name in an attempt to treat the boy more maturely. He loathed this as well. As the Turn progressed, he would see his mother become more and more pregnant. There was some excitement towards having another younger sibling, though Delvirin sorely hoped it was a son. That son could be his ticket out (nevermind how the eventual boy might also react to the pressures of being future Heir).
And then the baby was born. A son! A son! This was it! Of course, his parents would wait on naming the brand-new boy. But when it came time to name the brat, Viri would find that his precious nickname would be taken. Virrinel was the new boy, and even with the two ‘r’s, he’d hear his mother coo to the baby using ‘Viri’. It felt insulting, but Delvirin couldn’t be happier for the existence of a new son. Now...how exactly does one ask their dad to go to a Weyrhold?
