The days were getting longer, hotter, as spring inched toward summer. The sea was warmed by Rukbat's rays, and whenever he could find a moment- that was where you'd find K'zar. It was the closest he could get to what he'd had, the rush of the waves up the beach washing over his feet and legs. For all that he was content, part of him wondered if he'd ever get the chance to take up that aspect again. Small as she was, Lepsuth was far too large to be on a ship, and she couldn't fly forever, following him.
Lepsuth was lying at his back, chest supporting him with her legs stretched out alongside his own; she fidgeted and the same restless, vague urge that had been bothering her for the last few days spilled over again. In the blink of an eye, the soothing waves became a mocking reminder that he was stuck, and he was on his feet in the next heartbeat. Eye-level with the green, who regarded him with an eye whirling an odd mix of red-yellow-orange with faint traces of blue mixed in; K'zar reached out to rest one hand against her nose and the other against a cheek. Lepsuth hummed, a deep vibration, but her mind felt different. Normally she'd be awash with love for him, but now she seemed... distracted.
Dropping his arms, K'zar brushed at his trousers, wiping away sand- he was definitely going to have to shower before turning in tonight. A last pat and then he looked back at Lepsuth, whose gaze had drifted skyward. "Coming?" he asked, taking a step away and anticipating the green's immediate rise to follow; when she stayed still after he'd put five feet between them, he turned back.
She wasn't looking at him. Which in itself was strange, but when she did rise it wasn't to follow; she turned away from the water and toward the Weyr. "Lepsuth?"
Her response was short and distracted: I think I want to fly.
"You want to fly?" The surprise in K'zar's voice as he repeated the words seemed to catch her attention, her head turning toward him. She wasn't usually so... assured. Which was the best way K'zar could think of to describe this: it wasn't her usual hesitant approach to something new, and he wasn't sure how to take it. She just wasn't the spontaneous type.
Her answer, though, was more typical. Is that okay? I just feel like I should. But I don't have to...
"If you want to, you should." Vaguely it was starting to dawn on K'zar- he'd been there for the lessons on Flights, the tips on what to look out for. It was reassuring to know that Lepsuth hadn't gone straight to aggression, but she was different, and who was he to hold her back? She'd rise sooner or later. "Go on. Fly."
With that, Lepsuth was airborne, and K'zar set off at a run toward the Weyr and his own room. Even now Lepsuth remained conscious of him, waiting until he reached their weyr before snagging her claws into a herdbeast; his warning was met with ready acceptance. The green knew what to do, giving with not a shred of fight over blooding her kill. Her wings mantled over the beast, eyes now fully red with the flush of need, and in their quarters, K'zar trembled as he changed.
I'm ready now, the green broadcast, courteous as ever as she lifted her head, stretched her wings, gaze flickering over her suitors, and then she sprang into her maiden Flight. Join me!
