Muze;
Vavithan;
Rachel laughed and she looked up into the rider’s face, searching for the tone and meaning of it. After she was sure it was purely amusement she turned back to Aslith momentarily, waiting for her response. She was used to adults taking their time to answer questions, but Rachel didn’t make her wait long. Her big brown eyes turned again to Rachel as she informed her that she could go and then went on about something that had to do with no guarantees. She was so elated that she could leave that evening that the rest of Rachel’s words were a blur and she looked up at the blue rider with doe eyes.
There was a moment pause where she realized a question had been posed and she nodded vigorously and let a big grin spread across her youthful face. She was about to turn and run to get her things when the musical tone of Aslith touched her once more. Her movements paused and she turned to Aslith with awe in her gaze. Twice now. Twice a dragon had spoken to her. Three times now, three times. Then she realized the dragon was addressing Vavithan, not her. The top of her body twisted so she could semi-face her brother, a small mischievous smile playing on her lips.
“Oh, he’ll come.” Was all she said before darting away, taking one last glance at the blue dragon and his rider, as if assuring herself that they were real and wouldn’t disappear. The faster she got her things, the faster they’d have to keep their promise that she could leave. Perhaps it was unfortunate that she didn’t bother to tell anyone or pause to say any goodbyes, or even more worrysome that she didn’t feel the need to…except for mother. As docile as she was, she had been her mother, even if she hadn’t been her advocate like Vavithan had.
“Mother, I’m leaving.” Her mother didn’t take her seriously until she came back with two bags over her shoulder. “Vavithan is coming too.” Vavithan’s bag was more bulky, she had included everything in sight in his room, she also held a small box with a few more things that she had seen and wasn’t sure he had wanted. She needed to leave then, she didn’t want Vav delaying her departure, whether he was coming or not – but in her mind she was acting and going about her way as if she was.
Muze’s mother gave her a large hug and held her tight. There might have been a tear or two that escaped, but she rubbed them away before they separated so that Muze could only wonder. Muze did not cry. She was too elated, and one thing was for sure, she wasn’t going to be the one that broke the news to her father. Her short legs moved as quickly as they could with the bags bouncing against her back and side.
“Alright, let’s go!” She said with a wild grin and out of breath from running to and fro. She plopped Vav’s things had his feet. “You’re all set too.” She tilted her head innocently and blinked at her brother, assuming his choice had been set.
Vavithan;
His hands moved slowly over the dragon, taking in the unfamiliar scent and feeling of a dragon. Dragons were another world, one many boys wished they could be part of when they were younger, Vavithan included. Then the boys grow up and realize that it was just a dream and they burry their head in other duties and joys. The wash of warmth of the dragon’s breath washed over him and he blinked automatically from the moving air. Boats were things he understood, dragons were alien to him – but the idea was not unappealing.
In his mind he had begun to try and get used to the idea of a life without Muze. Parts would be more relaxing, others facets were hard to imagine. He was starting to think of the boat he was working on, comforted by the idea of the large project ahead of him. Then, it happened. His hands fell away from the dragon. He flinched and looked immediately into the swirling gaze of Aslith, as if by instinct he knew the jolting experience had come from the blue dragon. His mouth had fallen open and he hadn’t computed that the dragon was confirming what Rachel had said was true. And he almost missed the question, since the second time he brushed against his consciousness he was able to appreciate the moment a little more. The sound was lyrical and careful, and it took him to realize that he had been posed a question- a daunting one at that.
Before he had time to really think on the question he closed his open mouth and turned with wide eyes to Rachel. Her words were a blur, but at the same time every single one seemed to prick his consciousness with utmost clarity. Before he knew it she was done, looking at him and he almost missed Muze’s sly grin before she darted away.
“Me…a dragon rider? I mean, I guess just candidate as you said… but…” He paused, glancing behind him to see if his father had joined the crowd. He hadn’t expected to find him and was grateful when he wasn’t there. Muze disappearing wouldn’t cause a problem, his father wouldn’t bat an eye at it…but him? What about the project? What about…but then, all of the questions and worries seem to slip away and the dream of a young boy took hold.
“Yeah, I mean.” He looked at Aslith. “Aslith thinks I might have a chance… I definitely won’t pass an opportunity like this.” His words were definite, but there was still a string of doubt that seemed to tie him down. It seemed so sudden, did they really mean to leave just then. He realized that maybe he should get his things as well…When Muze suddenly, breathless. “It that my…?” He looked down at his feet, recognizing a couple of his things spilling out of a leather bag. Vav shook his head and rolled his eyes a little. She wasn’t going to leave without him, it seemed.
