NAME: Sk'lar (formerly Skyrilar)
RANK: Weyrling
AGE: 25 Turns (spring)
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Homosexual
DRAGON: Blue Ikkamath
APPEARANCE: Sk'lar stands at 5' 10”, with a fit but not overly muscular build. His hair is dark brown and kept short, but long enough that he gets some impressive bedhead, and generally keeps himself clean shaven, though he doesn't mind keeping a light 'shadow' on his face. He has thick brows set over warm brown eyes flecked with amber. He is a simple dresser, preferring the casual in natural tones, and stays away from anything too flamboyant.
PERSONALITY FAULTS:
Distant & Reserved – For most of his life, Sk'lar has watched people walk in and out of it with very little warning. Because of this he has built up walls to keep people at a distance and it takes him a very long time to warm up to others, to allow them in, because he wants to make sure they're actually going to stay before he lets himself care about them too much. He often comes off as cold and is generally short in conversation. It takes a lot of effort on the part of others to get to know him, to get him to open up, and when he hardly offers any incentive to do so, it keeps him in a pretty lonely place. In the end his walls hurt him just as much as they protect him from being hurt.
Insensitive & Tactless – Sk'lar is not the most sympathetic person. Growing up fairly independent, without any real sort of familial connection to anyone, his ability to relate to others suffered. While he never TRIES to be outright cruel, he can sometimes come off that way, making careless and sometimes inappropriate remarks without taking into consideration the situation or how such things make others feel. He may or may not feel bad about it, depending on the situation, because he doesn't have a lot patience for overly dramatic emotional outbursts over things he considers insignificant.
Judgmental Perfectionist – As someone who values organization and structure, with an eye for detail, Sk'lar is a ridiculous perfectionist about most aspects of life. It makes him overly critical and he comes off as incredibly judgmental, as he is not shy about pointing out flaws and mistakes and telling you just how you need to fix them, right now preferably. However this also means he holds himself to incredibly high standards, and when he fails at something multiple times over has been known to start beating himself up and feeling worthless.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS:
Responsible & Serious – Sk'lar takes life seriously, a bit too much at times, and will never be heard complaining about duties or chores he's been set to. He is always on time, always works hard at everything he does, and has made himself known as a reliable and efficient worker. He has no patience for slackers or those who would goof off when they should be working and isn't afraid to call people out on it in attempt to keep them on task.
Cooperative & Helpful – Though his passion lies in the kitchen, Sk'lar is more than willing to jump in and help around the Weyr wherever he is needed most at the time. He isn't afraid of hard work, and he wants nothing more than to be useful, to help the Weyr and by extension help all of Pern, because without the Weyrs Pern would be consumed by Thread. He sees serving the Weyr, in whatever capacity he can, as the most noble of callings.
Creative & Passionate - Sk'lar throws himself wholeheartedly into everything he does, whether its fighting Thread or washing dishes. He has a decent knack for turning mundane tasks into something more interesting, because there are always going to be tasks in life you don't want to do, so you might as well do what you can to enjoy them. In the kitchen is where his creativity and passion really shine, and he enjoys nothing more than experimenting with brand new dishes, mixing new flavors and ingredients to create something new. It has earned him scoldings of various levels in the past, as Mavros can hardly spare supplies for experiments that could end up ruining them. However, after he continued to discover ways to make their excessive diet of fish more palatable, he was given a bit more leeway.
FAMILY: Unknown
HISTORY: Skyrilar was born at Tidewalk Weyr and was told his mother is a greenrider, but never exactly who she was, and knows nothing at all about the identity of his father. His mother remained in his life only long enough to wean him before handing him off the creche, and he has no memories of her at all. While he was well taken care of in the creche, watching other children get visits and presents from their parents while he did not even know his own parents' names stung. Jealousy had him isolating himself from those that had actual relationships with their parents, though he did manage to make a couple friends of kids like him, kids who had no clue as to their parentage, and it helped to not be the only one.
When he and his friends came of age for candidacy, nearly every one of them took the opportunity, Skyrilar included. A few friends who had been older were already Standing when the chance finally came for him, and at his first hatching he saw two of them Impress and leave him behind again. It seemed every other hatching, he lost a friend to weyrlinghood while he was left on the sands. He realized at 17 turns, after 4 turns of failure under his belt, that he really needed to prepare himself for the possibility that he would never Impress. He wasn't being pessimistic, simply realistic. He needed a plan if that were to happen, a course for his future, something he could throw himself into so the bitterness at being left behind would not swallow him.
What he found was the kitchens. He had of course had chores there before, washing dishes or peeling tubers, simple tasks that he didn't particularly find any joy in. However, he paid more attention during his next chore assignment, considering every possibility. He wasn't interested in a craft, and he planned to keep standing until he aged out, at which point pursing a craft would be... well, he'd be a bit old for that too. Regardless, he wanted to stay at the Weyr. Even if he couldn't be a rider, he could still help out somehow, he just find out where he would serve the Weyr best, what he would enjoy the most.
Watching one of the cooks preparing for the evening meal, he became intrigued and asked if he could help somehow. He was shot down, but the cook offered to teach him privately later, if he was really interested in learning. And he was. He'd never really considered the work that went into a meal before, in all his time standing around washing dishes while meals were prepared around him. Over the course of the next two turns, he learned a lot about cooking and baking and came to really enjoy it. It was incredibly satisfying, preparing a delicious meal and knowing it was going to help keep riders well fed and healthy. He continued to stand, continued to be left behind.
Then all the drama about Thread's impending return started up. There were whispers in the kitchens about a faction forming to leave Tidewalk Weyr, though many passed it off as mere rumor. Skyrilar wanted to know for sure, and followed several different sources until he found the truth. And when Oria and M'ton led the exodus, Skyrilar went with them. He wasn't really sure why, to be honest... perhaps he wanted to know what it was like to leave others behind for once, rather than the other way around. What followed was the most horrific experience of his life as the Threadstorm caught them all off guard.
He didn't stand for Asurath's first clutch at Mavros, haunted by the Threadstorm. This was Thread. This was what being a rider meant, what he would have to face if he Impressed. He was no longer certain it was what he wanted. He threw himself into his work as a cook for the newly founded Mavros, instead trying to bring some joy to the battered and beaten Weyrhold through the meals he helped to prepare. Unfortunately ingredients were incredibly limited. But they survived. Things were hard, but after witnessing riders returning from Falls, hearing their stories, terrifying as they were, he started to regain his confidence. When Asurath's second clutch was laid, he was on the Sands, though he did not Impress.
More tragedy struck as the Weyrwoman was poisoned and the Weyrleader was revealed to be a fellis addict. Mavros's future was once more uncertain, and he once again threw himself wholeheartedly into his kitchen work. He did not attend the hatching at Mirran, too wrapped up in his confusion over the future. But Mavros endured, and finally Zalmaranth rose for her maiden flight and the Weyrhold had a proper weyrleader pair again. Heartened by this, he decided to stand for Mavros's first clutch in 2 turns, an Impressive clutch indeed with TWO golds. Again he was left behind. He really wasn't certain how much more of this he could take, but he was determined to give himself every chance at this point. He would keep standing until he aged out and no longer had the option.
Gold Aerroth's second clutch was laid, another Impressive clutch, with 20 eggs, and a fifth gold for Mavros. This was going to be his last hatching on the sands. He would be 26 in a few short months... he would be too old. He was resigned that he would never be a rider, but he did his best not to let it get him down on the sands. He simply wanted to enjoy his last hatching as a candidate, up close and personal and watching Impression happen right in front of him. And then it happened TO him. The massive, pale blue that stopped in front of him proclaimed himself HIS, his Ikkamath, and that he should stop standing around moping and get him some fooooooood! His first act as the newly named Sk'lar was to sob as though he didn't have a massive audience to witness it.
IN THE EVENT OF YOUR SUDDEN, UNEXPLAINED DISAPPEARANCE FROM THE SITE AT ANY POINT IN TIME, WHAT DO YOU WISH TO BECOME OF THIS CHARACTER AND ANY CREATURES THEY MAY IMPRESS?
b. Turn them into an NPC who may be killed off or used for plot purposes but who will not be played by someone else.
