You are distracted.
It wasn't a question. R'get glanced up to meet the whirling, curious eyes of his green. Pallath tiled her head slightly, a habit he was sure she had picked up from him, and he couldn't help but smile. Pal, honestly, I'm sorry. He patted her side and she grunted in acknowledgement of the apology. I thought I'd gotten used to getting up this early again, but you're right, my mind's been drifting. I'll focus better once I get some food in me.
On a rare day off, Rau and Pallath had nevertheless woken up at the fifth candlemark in the morning to settle into their new routine. The start of the morning meant a gentle warm up, consisting of Pallath flying a slow, steady circle around the weyr while R'get jogged. After that, they typically broke fast for the morning before heading into drills today. While there were no official drills set for their wing, R'get and Pal planned to continue on their own later that day.
Not like they were planning on pushing it, however. There was a reason they had break days - Pal was especially infamous for ignoring pain, which had been a heartache and a half when she'd been hurt in a Fall last. Rau was finding a good balance these days between working hard without enabling Pal to overwork herself.
As they made their way back to the weyr, Pallath nudged him mentally. That was not what you were distracted by.
No. R'get sighed. I'm just worried about Azzy. He's looking thin and worn down these days, and as fun as it is to tease him about it... I dunno. I feel like I should be doing something more, to help him out. Pallath rumbled, low and soothing, which R'get took to mean she was sympathizing. We're friends! If we were still brats, I could drag him off to -
He trailed off. For a moment, Pallath waited patiently for the thought to be completed. She landed on the opening to their weyr before she started to grow impatient with him, and pressed slightly more demandingly against his mind.
Sorry, Pal. Just being an idiot like usual. He dismounted, giving her a light slap on the foreleg. I mean, honestly! Why can't I just drag A'zael off someplace fun? I mean, maybe he won't want to at first because of 'duty' and 'responsibility' and all that but, shards, we get days off. So should he! Even if I have to drag him out of that office myself.
This sounds like trouble. Pallath stated, dryly. Almost like stealing the Weyrleader.
'Kidnapping' is the word you're looking for. Rau corrected, distractedly. She snorted. Really, Pal, the question here isn't if I should do this. The real question, my friend, is what I should do.
Which meant he needed a planning partner. And really, who better than Fin, who, as Azzy's brother, probably was exactly the person to bring into this. What luck that they shared a weyr! Though he wasn't actually too sure what S'fin would think of think of it. At this stage, this initial burst of excitement it felt almost like a prank - or, 'like trouble', as Pal put it - and that was more his and Azzy's thing. He'd never plotted with S'fin before. That was fun in its own right.
Look, maybe Azzy was Weyrleader and Rau was getting more responsible but that didn't mean they weren't all still young men all of a sudden. What was wrong with a bit of fun? A break?
Maybe all those extra drills were getting to him.
"Hey, Fin!" R'get walked into the living space, looking around for the other green rider. "Are you up yet? I need to run something past you that might be either the best or worst idea I've ever had. I am bribing you with whatever you want for food. Actually, guess what, tell me what you want and I'll even bring the food up here."
Where was he, anyway?
