Oxyoth sighed mournfully as he circled over the cliffs, before finding a spot to alight upon. D'rave reached over to pat his neck absently. "You're in a cheerful mood on this lovely day."
Do not tease me, Oxyoth groaned. The light is too bright, the wherrys are too loud, you missed a spot when you bathed me last -
"- and the sky is falling, and your food is all spoiled. I know, I know. "
The dragon's periwinkle hide shuddered. The sky does fall. I do not know why you find this all so funny.
D'rave lifted his hands up in brief surrender. He didn't find it funny, not really. And he had the most affection any rider could have for their dragon - truly - he really believed that! But there was only so much moping around that he could allow Oxyoth before he had to stage an intervention. Bathing, snuggles, and even food clearly had stopped being enough a long time ago.
"Look, buddy, I love you - I really do. And I'm going to allow you this shtick of being mopey, like, most of the time. I get it! It's your thing. But today" D'rave said. He pointed deliberately at Oxyoth. The big, chubby blue blinked bemusedly back. "Today, right now, we are going to get us a hobby."
Oxyoth gave him a curious look.
"We're going to start learning trick flying."
More work, The blue moaned piteously.
His rider sighed, a man at the end of his rope. "'More work', yeah." He shook his head, chuckled. "You gotta believe in me Ox, this is going to be good for us. For you. Give you something besides Searching to look forward to everyday. Or, I don't know, distract you from..." He gestured helplessly at his sad friend. Remembering threadfall too clearly? Hearing everything too loudly, being so sensitive that all of Pern was overwhelming?
"You know I love you, right? If you wind up hating it, we'll try something else. But we're not going to start by giving up because it intimidates you." D'rave looked up at his dragon pleadingly. "I know you have so much unused potential, and it really sucks sometimes when I hear people say that you don't fly well. Trick flying could really help sharpen us. Like, two wherrys with one stone kind of deal. What do you say?"
Oxyoth tilted his bulky head and regarded D'rave. For a moment, the blue rider thought he was going to ask to nap in the light instead. But then, with a huff of impatience, the blue raised his wings. I suppose I can try. If you insist.
D'rave pumped his fist in the air with excitement. "Yes! Oh, really, you really mean it? This is gonna be great for us, ha, I really thought you were going to refuse."
