Late Autumn
Treyjen
Standing on the deck of the Storm’s Eye, he leaned his forearms on the deckwall as he watched his companion from the night before descend the gangplank. She paused at the bottom to blow a kiss up at him, tossing her dark hair back, and he grinned back at her until she turned and disappeared into the people milling about the docks. He pushed himself up and rubbed his temples with a groan as his head throbbed from the movement. Hopefully he hadn’t decimated his case of Benden Red last night. He couldn’t even remember the woman’s name that had been so… generous to take care of him so well this morning. She hadn’t supplied it this morning, but he had to imagine he’d asked her when they’d met last night. He couldn’t remember a thing. Not that it mattered what her name was.
He swaggered back to his cabin, pushing inside and falling heavily into a chair at the table bolted down in the middle of his quarters. Consequences were awful things. Couldn’t a man just enjoy himself for once and not wake up the next day in some sort of pain? He rubbed his forehead to relieve some of the pounding and glanced over at the crate secured by his bedside which held the Benden Red he was so very fond of. Another bottle would help settle his problem… but it was so sharding far away. He stared longingly at the crate as though his will alone might be enough to bring it to him before finally giving in and pushing back to his feet, cursing as the pounding resumed, worse than before. Holding his head in one hand, he shuffled over to pull out a bottle. Settling onto his bed, he drank straight from the bottle. Oh how those in high society would be appalled as he gulped down the wine like common ale.
He wiped his face with the back of his hand, catching his breath before drowning himself in more wine. By the time he’d finished the bottle, the pounding in his head was a forgotten, unpleasant memory. As he sat there with the empty bottle hanging between his fingers, he eyed the crate beside his Benden Red, sifting through hazy memories until he recalled just what was within it. Eggs. Right. Round little things, bigger than any firelizard egg he’d ever seen, but still half comparable. He set the empty bottle back into the Benden Red case and stood, straightening out his coat. That crate could remain firmly closed until he found a beastcrafter that might have some knowledge of what the things would hatch out. He was well aware of the long lost species that some Mavros dragonrider had discovered. Perhaps they were more of these new creatures. He had no idea what they looked like and even less of an idea as to what their eggs might look like.
Running his hand through his hair, he stepped out on deck, properly inebriated. He supposed now would be as good a time as any to make the trek up to the beastcrafter cothold. He could send someone else running up there, but he hadn’t allowed anyone else to really handle the eggs at all. A number of them had already been broken, he hadn’t wanted to risk more. He figured he could describe them better than anyone else on the crew. It would be best if someone who thought they could identify them could come back to the ship and have a look themselves, but it might narrow the field if he could give a decent description beforehand. He didn’t particularly want a herd of beastcrafters trampling onto his ship.
About an hour later he had finally wound his way up through the fisher caverns and to the greater part of the island above. As he passed between beast pens he kept his eye out for any crafter at work he might be able to speak with. Ugh. Herdbeasts smelled sharding awful. He’d take the fishy smell of the harbor caverns over the fardling beast pens, at least the salty air of the sea lingered in the harbor caverns. It was too… earthy up here. Smothering. The sky stretched clearly above and yet he felt entirely trapped by the ground beneath his boots, stationary and unyielding. How he hated being ashore. Hopefully he could find someone quickly and get out of here.
