NAME: Carmortin (Morry)
RANK: Holder/Candidate
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Heterosexual and pooooooosibly bisexual. But he'd rather not be attracted to anyone.
PETS: None.
Dragon: Zardilath
APPEARANCE: Morry is a young man with dark curly hair and brown eyes. His face is squarish and long, and tends to look morose--which isn't helped by his constantly-messy hair and nervous personality. While he's avoided the acne and blotchy skin of some teens, his abilities to trip over himself (not just physically) and put his foot in his mouth are concentrated into lethal doses. He's frazzled and very much shows it--either spooking far too easily, or constantly falling asleep in spite of his best efforts.
Not only that, he's a late bloomer. His best friend Kemris is ridiculously mature and confident for his age--and while most other boys are at least done growing by his age, Carmortin's shot up nearly a foot over the past Turn. At six feet tall, Morry's a head above his mother, a hand taller than Kemris, and just scraping over his father's height. And he shows no signs of stopping, since he's starting to outgrow his clothes for the fourth time this Turn.
PERSONALITY FAULTS: Adolescence has not treated him well. Morry is so awkward at talking that his father thinks he's developed a stutter, he spooks easily, and is becoming slightly famous for messing up SOMETHING from being startled. (He is no longer allowed within five feet of a glowbasket, young children, or fragile objects.) And then there's the other side of adolescence--the messy, emotional, irritating, MESSY side which he refuses to talk about because it's far too overwhelming. He wants puberty to be over as fast as possible, especially the hormonal part, and has gotten through it by throwing himself into studying, singing, and chores.
In fact, the thing with Morry is that he lets things pile up. If he doesn't want to talk about something, which is frequently, he just meanders around it until he's boxed into a corner and he HAS to talk. Then there's how he can barely last a day without a couple of bruises or scrapes. And then there's how he feels so inferior next to Kemris, or his father, or... everyone, really. Being Searched for Mavros' latest clutch is NOT helping his nerves.
He's quite loyal, which would be a good thing if it weren't for the fact that he can't wrap his head around the concept that some people aren't worth trusting. Like his father, a retired healer who's most likely THE reason he's such a wreck. Morry doesn't question things--not because he's dull or complacent, but because he both lacks the confidence to speak up and loses his composure at the first sign of pressure.
And the latter was because his parents started treating him like he'd fall apart at the drop of a hat, so he naturally picked up on their expectations and turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. The jury's still out on whether he can break out of it without them around.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS: For all his faults, Morry does have quite a few good points. When he's not wound-up, he's careful and surprisingly gentle. With his misdiagnosed stutter, he thinks a lot before he speaks--some might say too much. But while not as eloquent as he'd like to be, he can be pretty insightful for a teenager. His nervousness is the more obvious extreme of an intense young man who absorbs moods like a sponge; whatever Carmortin feels, he's going to feel it, and strongly.
He has a fondness for singing since the constant rehearsing, hyperbolic emotions, and need for memorization means that he can express his feelings without having to deal with the awkwardness of talking. After all, people laugh less if you stutter as long as they think you're memorizing a song. Singing is his only outlet for expression, and he can focus so well that he can memorize a mid-length ballad in days.
In fact, when you think about it, Morry isn't as far-fetched a Candidate once you get past his twitchy, confidence-lacking shell.
FAMILY:
-Father Cargess (49)
-Mother Millanty (50)
-Twin siblings Antressa and Alress (15)
HISTORY: He was a bit of a miracle child by being born--after Cargess and Millanty tried to have children for years with only a miscarriage and a few stillbirths to show for it, they gave up for quite a while. And then Millanty realized she was pregnant at thirty-two, at which Cargess promptly retired and settled down in Mirran so he could focus all his efforts onto his potentially-only child.
Who then proved to be his oldest son, and though he was glad for his fraternal twins as well, the stress of parenthood at the couple's late ages and their heightened protectiveness meant that their parenting was rather... outdated. Cargess found no problem with smacking his kids if they did something wrong--and when Carmortin hit puberty at a rather late seventeen Turns, he tended to get the brunt of it because of all the dropped plates, scattered glowbaskets, and general lack of coordination.
And then Carmortin started stuttering six months ago. Could it be related to the fact that his father had a good chance of hitting him if he literally made a wrong move? Well, in both their minds, it wasn't--this was just another unfortunate obstacle that got in the way of Carmortin becoming a proper young man, and Cargess promptly started working on speech therapy with him, because another healer dealing with HIS son? Or giving a second opinion? Not if he could help it, by Faranth's Egg. The boy had a speech problem that had to be dealt with properly.
With his rapidly rising reputation as "the klutz" and "the boy with the stutter," Carmortin's only real anchor was Kemris, his best friend. They'd known each other since they were six, and neither of them would trade it for anything.
In fact, their families moved from Mirran together because it's not just the two boys with a strong relationship. They had other friends and have made a few new ones at Mavros, but the two of them were all but joined at the hip--Kemris was the only non-relation Morry could talk to without stuttering, Morry was the only person who could deflate Kemris' ego, and Kemris was the only one besides Millanty who could calm Morry down--or wake him up without startling him. (Morry thinks his father calms him down, but it's really just being startled or terrified into shutting up.)
You'd think Morry's lack of confidence would make him dependent on Kemris, but they have a surprisingly healthy relationship since Kemris didn't alternate between hitting him for a mistake and treating him like a piece of glass. One might argue that Morry-with-Kemris is closer to who he would have grown into without Cargess' constant hovering. Of course, the recent lack of Kemris when he got Searched for Zalmaranth's first clutch has opened up a very uncomfortable side of feelings.
Which, as usual, he refuses to talk about.
