Please note that all hatchlings are made independently and without taking into consideration the current candidates and only after all hatchlings have been fleshed out do we start matching them up with potential lifemates – your candidates. If your character does not Impress (unless you specifically asked for them NOT to) I assure you they WILL Impress, there just wasn’t a dragon right for them in that particular clutch. We may even Impress hatchlings to NPCs or put one or two up for adoption and leave PC candidates standing if there are no dragons right for them in that clutch. Just be patient.
A lot of thought goes into which characters will Impress which hatchlings. If you do not get a Gold or a Bronze or the exact color you wanted for your candidate, please do not be offended and do not whine, I promise it has nothing to do with if we like you or not and whining will ensure you never Impress a metallic. There are a lot of contributing factors, though not all of them JUST deal with your character. This thread explains the factors that go into Impression decisions by the staff.
THE CHARACTER
Of course, there are many things about your actual character that go into the decision.
Gender and Sexual Orientation – Dragons tend to prefer bonding to riders of their own gender, though the smaller colors are more lenient about it.
Gold: Usually Heterosexual Females or Bisexual Females, uncommonly Homosexual Females.
Bronze: Usually Heterosexual Males or Bisexual Males, uncommonly Homosexual Males.
Brown: All Males, rarely Females.
Blue: All Males, uncommonly Females.
Green: All Females, Homosexual and Bisexual Males, rarely Heterosexual Males.
Personality – Dragons tend to Impress to those with either matching or opposite personalities. Matching personalities have things in common, take Golds for an example. Golds are generally very willful and will need a rider who has a will of their own and can keep up with them. Opposite personalities ‘fill holes’. The dragon has strengths that counter the rider’s weaknesses and vice versa. If the rider has a quick temper, the dragon might be more calm and collected. Some pairings will be a bit of both, matching and opposite, for certainly the dragon and rider could be alike in certain aspects and have a few strengths and weaknesses that complement each other. After counting out those genders and sexual orientations that will never Impress to certain dragons, we look for pairings that seem to make the most sense based on these personality concepts.
Age – Your character must be of age to be a Candidate. The age range to be Searched is 13-20, but previously Searched Candidates may stand until they reach the age of 25. 12 is the absolute minimum that anyone will ever Impress on this site, and that will only be from the stands and not as a formal candidate, so chances are incredibly slim.
Being Searched – For your character to Stand for Impression at a Hatching, they MUST have been SEARCHED, as in found by a Searchdragon. The reason for this is because that means your character has a certain unconscious empathic/telepathic ability which is required to be able to Impress. If your character has not been Searched (yet) and is still of age for candidacy (and you’ve expressed interest in having said character Impress) then a stands Impression may be possible, but unlikely as the event is supposed to be rare and we want to keep to canon.
Re-Impression – A dragonless rider has a chance to re-Impress under certain circumstances. Most riders, upon losing their dragon, will either suicide or simply become too insane from the grief and emptiness to function properly, and another dragon would never Impress to such a mind. Those few that can make it through with minimal mental and emotional scarring that remain under the 25 turn age limit for candidacy will be allowed to stand again if they desire it. Please note that even under these circumstances it will be very rare (most hatchlings will still shy away from the scarred mind of a dragonless rider) and there is still a chance they might not Impress again; I will not guarantee Impression for these characters as I do for normal candidates.
Originality - Yes, most Golds choose girls who have a will of their own and most Bronzes will choose males with ambition and leadership capabilities, but that doesn't mean all Goldriders and all Bronzeriders have the exact same qualities. If you want to Impress metallic, Impress the staff. Don't make a cookie-cutter mary-sue/gary-stu candidate with all the stereotypical metallic-rider whatnots. If it looks like you're trying too hard to tailor your character toward Impressing metallic, guess what. They probably won't.
Activity – How active are you with the hopeful candidate? Do you post regularly with them in Lessons and Chores threads? Do you play them other than in Lessons and Chores threads instead of just having them hover about the site as a placeholder for you to be able to Impress?
THE PLAYER – YOU
While how the staff personally feel about you will never affect what your character Impresses, there are a couple things about you that will affect Impression.
Characters – How many dragonriders do you have, and what colors do they ride? How many Candidates do you have standing at the same time? If you already have a Goldrider, you will NOT be getting a second, and if you have a Bronzerider already, the staff will consider others that do not have a Bronzerider before giving you a second. If you already have a bunch of dragonrider characters your candidate might not Impress right away, as opposed to someone with a couple non-rider characters (as something of a reward for helping keep character types diversified). If you have multiple Candidates standing at the same time, each successive Impression will be less likely to happen. While one of your characters might Impress at that hatching, depending on how many Candidates NOT played by you are available to Impress, your others might have to wait for another clutch. You may Impress 2 dragons per clutch.
Activity – How much time do you spend on the site? Do you post actively in RP threads? Do you keep up with all of your characters? Bronzeriders and ESPECIALLY Goldriders must be active on the site. I will not give a Gold or a Bronze to anyone who only stops by to post occasionally and isn’t putting much time or effort into the site and will reward those who do. You also must be keeping up with every character you’ve made (if you feel you’ve made too many to handle you can always put a couple up for adoption or simply transfer them out, I will not hold it against you, in fact it would get you brownie points for showing you are responsible enough to know that you were overwhelmed and needed to cut down rather than making a bunch of characters just because you can). I have to ask myself, if I give you a Gold or a Bronze, will you keep up with those Greenrider characters or let them waste away unplayed? And what about your healer, will you abandon them and spend all your time on your shiny new metallic rider? Posting with all of your characters regularly gives me confidence that you will continue to play them even after getting a ‘special’ new character.
Literacy – I will not penalize those who simply lack the skills of grammar and spelling by saying I will never give you a higher ranking dragon, but I will say that I will reward those who put effort into their posts and try their best to be as literate as possible despite any difficulties they might have. Those who go above and beyond and are posting way above the post minimum all the time with quality, well written posts are more likely to get a Gold or a Bronze. Don’t worry, even if you can’t get much more than the minimum down for your posts, quality is always better than quantity, so as long as you’re putting some thought and effort into your posts and trying your hardest to keep the grammar and spelling in check, you’ll still have a chance. I realize not everyone is an English major XD (I’m not one either).
Unusual Impression – If you’re hoping for a stands Impression (including to that of a 12 turn old, which adds to the unusualness), hoping for a re-Impression to a dragonless rider, or some other rather unusual type Impression not yet thought of, then the intended character’s bio must be exceptional and your activity and post quality should be high or you’re unlikely to be considered for such things.

You absolutely do not have to be staff to Impress a Gold.
