K'zar had had every intention of enjoying his lunch. It'd been peaceful, for the most part, even with Vitra chattering away about the recent betweening lesson. For whatever reason she seemed to stick to him like glue- he saw her with others, from time to time, but always seemed to show up again. He didn't particularly mind, even when she never seemed to stop talking; she needed nothing more than a hum of acknowledgement when she paused to breathe. He couldn't have told anyone what she was going on about half the time. At least she didn't seem to mind.
Lepsuth was at his side as usual- as constant a presence as she could be, when he wasn't where she couldn't follow. He was leaning against her middle, her chin resting on one knee as he ate, her mind content with the inactivity of the moment. K'zar lifted his fork to his mouth, a piece of meat speared on the tines; as he did so, his gaze landed on a group sitting not far off, classmates he recognized. T'ren, the brownrider, a female greenrider who he was less familiar with, and a couple blueriders. T'ren was looking back at him, a smirk on his face. The two locked eyes, and T'ren stuck his arms out to the sides, flailing them about with a sudden, mocking look of shock on his face. And then he pointed at Lepsuth and laughed.
It was only then that K'zar realized Vitra had stopped talking, her blue eyes glaring at the older weyrling. It was a vague realization, something that didn't really matter- the lack of her voice rambling away. K'zar said nothing. He glanced down, set his plate on the ground, and rose. Lepsuth shifted then, her head lifting as K'zar rose, but she saw clearly enough the taunt aimed at her, and any hesitation K'zar might have felt faded at the flash of hurt that rose when Lepsuth understood that those people were making fun of her for her behavior during the recent lesson.
He didn't say a word, ignored Vitra who jumped to her own feet and called after him to try to diffuse the situation. T'ren faced him, face still twisted in a mocking smirk. If he suspected anything, it didn't show in his expression. And K'zar gave him no hint of his intention.
One moment the brown weyrling was facing him- the next, he was reeling backward, clutching his nose, and K'zar's knuckles were stinging from the two quick blows he dealt the arrogant jerk. He rubbed them lightly with his other hand, glowering down at the brownrider. "Say something else about my dragon," he dared, and then switched his glare to the rest, including them in it. He didn't care who it was; he wasn't going to stand by and let anyone insult the green who was his lifepartner. His other half- his opposite, in many ways, but still perfectly suited to him.
Even if he had to deal with the consequences of his actions. Which he was sure he'd have to, but not at the moment. Instead he turned back to his meal, to Vitra, staring at him, and Lepsuth, who hadn't moved from her spot. He sat back down, felt Lepsuth's nose ruffle his hair, and took another bite as a smile flashed across Vitra's face; T'ren was already heading off, probably to have someone tend to his face and to whine to D'rew. K'zar watched them go, his flash of anger cooling as Lepsuth settled again and Vitra picked up the line of chatter where she'd left off.
