Weyrling Muze :: Green Rylath
Rylath's first time rising, back in time
Rylath's first time rising, back in time
Perhaps it was odd that just that morning she had thought about her brother’s offer – to talk about Rylath’s first rise. More like, she wondered if she should have found someone else to talk to about the to-be event, but as she tied knots from thick grass together, she let it slip from her mind again – instead focusing on making sure she was folding the knots correctly so they would hold. She’d created quite a spread, a makeshift net that had taken her days to make. It wasn’t necessarily necessary… but it had kept her mind busy during the quiet times of the day when she wasn’t with Joia or the others in her class.
Time seemed to seep through her fingers, and now it was too late if Muze wanted to talk to someone about Rylath rising. Rylath was twitching her in sleep, dozing deeply and soundly. She’d been quieter recently, but Muze hadn’t thought much of it. While another greens were got irritable, Rylath simply kept to herself because she didn’t want to bother Muze with her feelings. In her sleep, Rylath was flying fast. Since she was one of the larger greens, she wasn’t built for the speed and agility of some smaller greens, but in this dream her size didn’t hinder her. She twisted and turned in the sky, like a shipfish dancing in the ocean – but even more nimble. She was bright in the sun – her speckles glittered, and she needed to show everyone. She needed to.
Her eyes snapped open, whirling an agitated color as she quickly rose from her spot on the cliff. Her footing slipped in her excited state, but not enough to tumble from her high spot. After she steadied herself she launched herself directly into the sky with a strong leap, probably the best she had ever done – though she didn’t want to assume so. She circled around the bowl, bellowing an invite to all the males, as few as they were.
Coyli was fishing in the shallows and Muze was about to join her, when she felt Rylath wake up. Her insides seemed to freeze and traveled to her feet – leaving one foot on a rock, the other in the chilly salty water that came in and out. “Oh, no.” Muze said in an almost inaudible whisper and gasp. Her hands were wringing the makeshift net, twisting in her hands as she and Rylath’s consciousness started to merge. ‘What’re you doing?!’ She asked, as if she didn’t know. She’d felt Coyli’s chases – but they were nothing like this. I rise, Muzemine! I shine! I’m going to give a real chase for these boys! Some warning, she thought with a groan, but how could she expect the green to remember such a silly request? Or to even know? Muze let go of the reed net and stumbled half blind out of the water, she had to stop Rylath, but no… that was not possible, but in her blind panic she wondered if she could somehow stop the rising of her green.
The speckled form snaked higher into the sky and suddenly Muze was running down the beach, away from the Weyr as fast as she could. She had to get away from the blues and bronzes – no, she had to get away from the riders. She moaned, her heart so loud she could hear in her ears as she ran, a tear or two escaping the corner of her eyes. Rylath may have felt the panic from her rider, but she already had a couple of blues on her tail, taking chase to distract her.
Let’s go, let’s go! Rylath announced, glancing back at the male dragons that had lifted to chase. She didn’t really care their colors, it was the chase that pushed her adrenalin filled wings on, scooping up and down – and taking sharp loops when a blue got too close.
A paler blue made a quick dive from above, trying to meet her maneuvers. See how I can match you with my fancy moves? We were meant to be! Sabanth said, just missing his opportunity to catch Rylath.
I can’t make it too easy! Rylath bantered, taking a swoop upward, a thrill spinning through her at the close call. Muze felt it too, so much so that she fell to the ground, as if she could escape the blue that had come from above. Half conscious she could feel the sand under her fingers and that she was headed away from everyone.
Come, now! I'm surely your best option in this bunch. Said a voice who was chasing – but watching Rylath’s speckled form as he went. He knew he was sure to win such a beauty. It was Laverauth who had told his rider that such a speckled beauty needed to be his on this chase. Your speckles, they sparkle in the sun!
They do? Rylath looked back at herself, her well oiled body shimmered in the afternoon sun, the different greens catching the sun differently…not ‘sparkling,’ but perhaps they did from the blue’s perspective, so she didn’t doubt him. Thank you Laverauth! She tunneled through the air, spinning to give the boys a show.
Muze was gasping, getting up from her stumble, feeling the thrill and excitement of flying from the blues – and running down the beach. A cool breeze swept by her brown hair that had grown to her shoulders, brushing the bare skin on her arms. She was in the sky totally now, only slightly conscious that she was headed back toward the Weyr as the chase continued. When she arrived, kind hands guided her blind movements into a room – but she wasn’t in the room, she was in the sky with Rylath still, and she shied away from the hands, as if they were the blues that were chasing her. She wasn’t ready to be caught yet – wait, no, not at all. Muze surfaced only briefly as she realized where she was and what was happening. She twisted around just as she heard a voice call her name. Vav? There were others there and she turned away from them and almost ran into the crude bed that had been put together for the trip back in time.
No, no, no… Yes, yes, yes! She leaned forward on the bed, feeling the strain on Rylath’s muscles as if her own back and arms were sore. Perhaps she was larger for a Green, but she was still growing physically in size and stamina. She felt a panic from her dragon, but not because she was going to get caught, but she wasn’t sure who should catch her. Luckily there weren’t too many to choose from, but she didn’t like the idea of giving up, nor of choosing just one of them, not if it meant making others unhappy.
Rylath glanced back to see Sabanth at a further distance, but Hiyacraith was closer – but it distracted her from Laverauth who surged forward on the other side of her, slightly more above so that he could make his grab for her. You tire, pretty Rylath. I am the only one good looking enough for you! And he did, catching Rylath by surprise – but not displeased by the rest that the fall gave to her tired wings.
Back in the weyr; hands caught at her waist the moment the green was caught and she and Z’kar tumbled awkwardly onto the stiff bedding. Muze wasn’t aware of the others leaving, she was only aware of the fall, lips catching her own, and the adrenalin of the feelings that came with it.
