Vavithan; candidate
De ja vu? It seemed like it. Staring at the parchment with his writing utensil in hand and ink off to the side. He had put it off long enough and longer he stared at the blank page, he realized that it wasn’t going to write itself. The more he thought about it, the harder this was getting, even after the talk with Tak’ril. He had been leaning back in the seat and he scooted it forward and leaned into the desk and focused on Muze and what father and mother would like to hear about Muze… or what he’d hope his father would want to hear about Muze.Father,
Candidacy is treating us well, especially Muze. She’s a hard worker, as you know, and has been learning a lot about being a dragon rider. We even got to work with the last hatchlings – which are now Weyrlings – soon to fly for the first time in a month or so.
Muze is like a fish at sea, it’s like she was meant for this – the Blue rider that found her knew what she was doing. I came to watch over her, as you are aware that Weyr life is different from hold life.
He paused here, looking at his last sentence. It was a cop-out, telling his father he had only come because of Muze. If Muze was doing well, then his father would expect him to come back… He also wasn’t sure how aware his father was about the difference between Weyr life and hold life, but it was better to credit his father, rather than to call him out. He knew he would need to continue, but he would have to admit that he also was enjoying candidacy. Could he promise his father that if he didn’t impress the first time, that he would return home? He bit the inside of his cheek lightly in thought. No… he didn’t want to give up and he wasn’t that young, one-day he would age out, and then he could go home…I am also enjoying Mavros and learning about becoming a dragon rider. I hope to make you proud impressing a dragon and fighting thread for Pern and for our family. I also met the Weyr Leader here – A’zeal. When I told him I was from Eastern he expressed his gratitude for helping the Weyr kept fed with our premium fish. I’m proud to have come from such a hold.
Send love to mother for us,
Vavithan
A’zeal had said nothing about the quality of fish, but it would make his father feel important. He also wanted to make sure his father knew that he hadn’t been running away – but toward opportunity. He hoped he would see that in this letter. After reading it over and cringing over parts he wished he could rewrite, he rolled it up and cleaned up the ink.
He found Muze at midday meal and asked if Coyli would be willing to send a letter.
“As long as she doesn’t have to actually give it to anyone, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Good. She can leave it on our parents desk or bed then.”
Muze’s eyebrows lifted. “You wrote to mum and dad?”
“Yes.” He said with a sigh, pursing his lips momentarily. She nodded, silent for a moment.
“Will you teach me to write?”
Vavithan blinked at the change in direction of conversation. He nodded blankly. “Of course.”
“Good.” Was all she said, standing up with her empty plate to return to the kitchens. “We should send Coyli off in the barracks, it’ll be easier with less people around.”
He nodded, watching her go off. Yes… his letter would suffice.
