Stitches ~ Ny'x and Siorreya
Comfrey, Borage, Ezob, Hyssop, Lovage, Sage, Thymus, and Tussilago.
She went through the list of herbs used for or helpful when soothing coughs. It was rote, something she did as she worked, and it meant she worked well. It also passed the time. She kept grinding the herb as she went over other herb names and their use. She was specially grinding lavender and planning to mix it into the oils she used for Nimocith’s growing patches. Not only did it smell good, but many didn’t understand that lavender has more uses than eating and smelling. Its capabilities could also be used for painkilling and sedative in nature. Both great for sudden growth spurts that her sweet dragon was experiencing, especially in the middle of the night.
Not that Nimo has any trouble sleeping during the day. The thought was affectionate as she turned her attention to her blue dragonet. He was slender and small for a blue, but he still had his share of growth spurts and itching hide. He slept soundly in his corner that cradled his little body perfectly for now.
Ny’x suddenly felt an itch, and she rubbed her nose with her wrist, feeling her eyes water in response to the herb’s closeness to her eyes. She blinked a few times trying to clear the tears, and she turned her eyes away. Another healer walked by to gather some supplies near her, and the brunette felt herself stiffen, waiting for it… For Nimocith’s anxiety that would overwhelmingly hit her whenever others were too close. It didn’t matter if he slept, she still had the fear of those feelings, and she knew that they could influence her too much if she wasn’t careful. It was something they were working on, but Nimo was undeniably shy in nature, and Ny’x wasn’t all that great at building those walls yet. She had noticed she had grown semi-reclusive in nature since bonding with Nimo.
Not that she had ever been that social, her living situation had never really allowed her to be, always moving from town to town, traveling with her parents and no others. But when they were settled for in one place, Ny’x had always met everyone in the towns, helping people made people sociable. At least for most journeymen and women it di-
“Excuse me?”
Ny’x jumped, squeaking and turning to see who had crept up behind her. A small blonde with a green firelizard on her right shoulder stood behind her, a green dragonet standing next to her with head downcast as if in shame.
What, what is it?
“It’s okay Nimo, err sorry, I didn’t hear you sneak up on me… I guess I was a little focused.”
The smaller girl smiled wryly, vibrant with energy, and wispy hair flying into her face.
“I guess so, because we aren’t a very quiet group.” The green rider smiled brightly and gave a one-shoulder shrug with her free shoulder.
“Yes, you are quite the group. How can I help you?”
The young blonde looked accusingly at her dragonet, “Well, this one here thought it would be funny to surprise me as I came out of the bathing caverns, and she surprised me all the way to the floor, where I must have cut myself.”
Here the blonde presented her upper left arm, where it showed a deep gash about three inches long, and the green firelizard took to the air chittering admonishingly toward the green dragonet, whose head drooped lower. The firelizard then alighted on the small green dragonet.
Well how was I supposed to know how you’d react? I am so sorry mine; I won’t surprise you coming out of the showers again. The green crooned.
“You’d better not surprise me at all anymore missy.”
I know I know… I am sorry.
“I know you are.” The blonde said, and Ny’x was trying not to chuckle out loud. The brunette wiped her hands on her pants, wincing at the thought of how dirty she must look. She then took the proffered arm to better look.
“Wow, this is quite deep, it will need to be cleansed and closed.”
“Of course, it will, I guess that means less beach time for us…” Both the firelizard and the green reacted angrily, chittering at each other as if blaming eachother. Ny’x smiled at the obvious connection all three had.
How long will that take mine? They can leave as soon as you are finished? There is a lot of them.
Yes, Nimo, they can leave as soon as I am done.
Good. That looks awfully painful, she may need some numbweed.
You’re right. “Let me just clean up my hands, and then I will get you some numbweed before I fix that arm up.”
The smaller girl smiled and nodded in response, distracted by the ruckus her two greens were making for their disappointment. Ny’x washed her hands in a clean basin, scrubbing her hands with redwort and submerging the stained hands. She watched as the water turned purple, the color of the lavender she had been grinding. Once finished she grabbed the necessary utensils and herbs she would need for the simple procedure.
She came back to the small blonde sitting on a stool holding the firelizard in her lap, and speaking softly but firmly to the dragonet and firelizard. She placed her armful of items on the table closest to the stool, grabbing the jar of numbweed first.
“This is the numbweed, I’ll need you to sit still, are you comfortable enough here?”
“Yes, yes I am, thank you, I’m ready.”
Ny’x nodded, dipping her hands in the oil before dipping them into the numbweed. She didn’t need her hands going numb before she placed the stitches. She carefully traced the wound with the salve, being generous with it.
She rinsed her hands again and waited for the salve to do its job before cleaning it. Then grabbed redwort and witch hazel salve she had made for open wounds and cleaned the wound.
“I’m Siorreya by the way. This is Mimsy, and my bonded Amagetith.”
I can introduce myself mine. “I know you can, but you hadn’t yet, so I did, you silly sun crazed wher.”
Ny’x looked up and between the two of them, and smiled, “It’s very nice to meet both of you. I am Ny’x, and over there is Nimocith.”
“It’s nice to meet you, sad it’s under such poor circumstances. And it’s nice to meet you Nimocith.” Siorreya half called to the blue hiding in the corner.
“Nimo is very shy. He doesn’t speak to others.” She said it quietly, a small affectionate smile on her lips as she peeked over at her blue dragonet, who was closely watching every move. “Okay, this is cleaned, now I have to close it, but it shouldn’t hurt, you should still be numbed.”
“It is, it feels much better already. How long have you been doing this?” Sio asked as she watched the taller brunette pull out a needle and string a thin string through it. Then with steady hands she started stitching the wound closed.
“All my life pretty much. My parents were healers, and I traveled with them my whole life assisting them, until they took me to healer hall. I was a journeywoman doing my journeying in the southern continent when I was searched.” She had placed two sutures and was working on the third.
“Shells, what a life! You must have seen the whole world in your turns. That is so amazing, so is Ny’x your born name? It’s a very unique name.”
“Oh, I was actually born Nyxlin, daughter to Neesyn and Brixton, as an only child they had to figure out a way to fit both their names into my name, but Nimo decided I was only Ny’x to him.”
Ny’x smiled thinking of her parents. She missed them terribly and being in a whole different time made them seem even farther away. She knew they had been hurt when she had decided to leave them for a whole new adventure. But she just couldn’t say no when the opportunity had come.
“So you had a family and an occupation. How in the world did you end up here?” The blonde asked with curiosity. Siorreya had had close to nothing, and nothing to lose when she had rolled the dice in choosing not only to come to Mavros, but to travel back in time to possibly bond to a dragon. She had gambled with what little she had and come out lucky. She wasn’t so sure she could have done it with more at stake.
Ny’x tilted her head, closely examining the work she had done so far. The sixth stitch was finished and Ny’x judged there would need to be at least two more stitches. “Well, I fell in love, and I missed out on an adventure and a life with him because I was afraid… I’ve regretted it ever since, and I promised myself I wouldn’t let fear control me missing out on something better. And Nimocith is much better. He is everything and more than I could have dreamed up for myself.”
You are my everything too. He crooned at her, and she tossed another sweet smile toward him.
“Yeah, it was quite the life. How about you? What’s your story?”
“Nothing nearly as exciting. I was born in Benden Weyr, and after my mother passed, I was sent to live with her mother in Ista Weyr. Then I was passed to the Glass Hall when I was old enough. Now I’m here, best home on Pern if you ask me!”
Are you done? Maybe we will have time for the beach!
Amagetith interjected as Ny’x pulled away to look at the last two stitches she had placed. “Yes, I do think I am finished.” Siorreya hopped up and transferred the small green firelizard to her shoulder and lifted her arm at an angle that allowed her to see the stitches.
“Wow, thank you, it looks like disgusting work. Maybe we will have time for a quick beach trip.” Siorreya looked over at her dragon and then back at the brunette. “Thank you for the quick work you did here.”
“You are welcome, just try to keep it clean.” Ny’x grabbed a few salves for cleaning, and a small jar of numbweed. “Here is some witch hazel and redwort salves, they should help with keeping the wound clean and healthy, and numbweed for the pain.”
The blonde bounced over and grabbed the two small jars. “Perfect, I will use these, and I will see you around! Goodbye Ny’x and Nimo.” The blonde waved at both of them, and then was suddenly gone. Ny’x blinked at the abrupt departure. She reflected on their conversation and realized they had mostly just spoke about her, and as soon as the conversation had turned toward Siorreya, she was gone. She supposed the work was done as well, and maybe she had just really wanted to go to the beach…
Ny’x cleaned her station, and went back to grinding lavender, wondering if she had made a friend or not.
