NAME: Zi'lor (Ziachlor)
RANK: Brownrider
AGE: 42 Turns
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
DRAGON: Brown Asriath
PETS: Herding Canine Ginger
APPEARANCE: Zi'lor stands at a height of five feet, eight inches- fairly average, and very little about his appearance catches the eye: his skin is just tanned enough to not look pale, and his hair, dark brown in color, is only a few inches long. A high forehead leads to almond-shaped eyes, also brown, shaded by thin brows and eyelashes.
He is, perhaps surprisingly, finicky about what he wears; clothes make the man and people will judge; why give them something to be judgmental about? He doesn't go through outfit after outfit, and if something can be patched that's all for the better, but he won't go about looking shabby. Likewise, he has presence, a self-confidence that shows in the way he carries himself and approaches situations. Rarely hurried, unless it is necessary, he gets himself where he needs to go with a stride that radiates an assured air about him.
PERSONALITY FAULTS: Independent: To a fault, Zi'lor can be insistent on doing things on his own. Where most would be happy to accept help for some task- such as bathing a sixty-foot dragon a couple times a sevenday- Zi'lor prefers to do it on his own. Not necessarily because he thinks they won't do a good job, but simply because he does it well enough on his own, even though it takes longer, so why ask for help? This comes into play in other aspects of his life, too- the only time he will allow others to help is during Thread, and only then because he knows their help is the only thing keeping him and Asriath from harm.
Indecisive: He's not the best at dealing with situations that involve him making choices for other people; on his own, or with Asriath, he generally rarely comes into such a problem, but adding others into the mix, people who have their own thoughts can overwhelm him a bit; he does far better at following than leading, at backing up his Weyrleaders and Wingrider than actually being in that position himself.
Rash: Where family is concerned; their safety means more to him than his own, and he has been known to act without thinking when they are in trouble, or even when someone is talking down about them. He may not always be able to keep them from trouble, but he won't hesitate to back them up, even if the way he does it can get him in trouble afterward.
Holds Grudges: Cross him, or let him catch you insulting someone he cares for, and he won't forget it in a hurry.
PERSONALITY STRENGTHS: Open-minded: In the matter of Impression, to be clear- he can be a bit old-fashioned in the matter of fatherhood. But he trusts a dragon to choose what it wants and doesn't think much of those who look down on lady riders on blues or greens- his own mother and several of his sisters and daughters are greenriders and he won't hear a word against them. Being a bronzerider means nothing but higher rank; it doesn't make a man on a bronze better than a man on a green, and being a man doesn't automatically make him better than a woman.
Self-motivated: Zi'lor prides himself on getting things done without having to be directed every step of the way. He might overlook a few steps in the course of trying to get things done, but at least he gave it a go instead of standing around and waiting for someone to point and shove, and he won't hesitate to ask if he's uncertain on how to do something, rather than try and risk harming himself or someone else.
Observant: People-watching is one of his favorite pasttimes. Merely for the fun of it, for passing on what he sees to Asriath, for them to comment on- and maybe for the chance to help with a problem or offer help to someone he sees might need it
Easy-going: Friendly, a bit of a joker with friends and family, and expansive. He's an easy person to get to know, rarely withholding information about himself and more than happy to talk for hours about any number of topics; it's harder to get him to understand that they have other things to do, other places to go, than to get him started.

HISTORY: Z'ran's green, Xeriath, was the reason behind his meeting Charina at Benden Weyr those many Turns ago. The man and his green were both a good twenty Turns older than the younger riders, but something about Pinarth ignited Xeriath's possessive nature, and she took the newly arrived green under her wing, often quite literally. Not inclined to push the older aside, for all that she was bigger than the older green, Pinarth accepted the affection; she was more than happy to spend all the time Xeriath wanted lying in the bowl of their Weyr, the darker green's hide contrasting against her paler color as Xeriath often rested forepaws and chin on her charge.
It was a source of amusement for Z'ran and Charina, and with their greens spending so much time together, it was hardly possible for the riders to avoid each other. Talks, brief at first, grew into longer conversations, which grew into a relationship that spanned many Turns. Only their frequent Flights interrupted the easy companionship, and they were a constant source of irritation for Xeriath, who was all too likely to drive the winning male away as soon as possible- either from her side or from Pinarth's. In the course of these Flights, Charina became pregnant a total of six times over the course of her life, and while not certain of the parentage of all of the children, the two raised the boys and girls with Z'ran as their father.
Ziachlor is the oldest of the six, born two Turns after Z'ran and Charina met. He was followed by a single brother and four sisters, two or more Turns separating the six in age except for the last two girls. As a child the only interest he held his for siblings was for their ability to play; he turned his nose up at the infants as they appeared, one by one, but as each baby grew his willingness to interact with them increased as their capacity for fun did. He was closer to Corani than the rest, simply because she was the next born and his closest in age, the two able to entertain each other while their mother cared for the others.
He was as fascinated with dragons as most children, but his father's green had no love for the children and she had no trouble making it clear that they weren't to touch her, or Pinarth, no matter how the younger seemed to tolerate them; Pinarth never growled, but she never stopped Xeriath from doing so either, and it was less troublesome to simply find another dragon who was willing to be part of the games the weyrbrats played.
His last sister was born in the same Turn he became a Candidate. It meant an end to his carefree days, but he was thrilled at being one step closer to Impressing a dragon of his own. He took to the lessons with gusto, the chores with less enthusiasm, and spent the next five Turns just waiting. He might well have Impressed sooner, if not for the fight he started after Corani joined the ranks of Candidates: an insult directed at her from another boy who clearly thought little of girls on dragons. Ziachlor broke the boy's nose for the cruel remark, and then ended up held back from the next Hatching for his poor behavior, stuck doing chores while the eggs Hatched and the hum of dragons marked each new Impression.
It was another two Turns before he Impressed, left standing a couple more times before the clutch that held his dragon. He'd had no real preference for what he Impressed; a green, like his parents, would be nice. A blue, perhaps. A brown, maybe? He'd never really let himself expect to Impress bronze, not like the tailfork who had gone and done so two Hatchings ago.
Brown Asriath made that choice for him. He was the last to hatch from the clutch, a rather clumsy entry as he managed to trip over his own feet just as he broke free and then lay there looking helpless while appealing to Zi'lor to come to his aid. Not necessarily because he needed it, but to make it clear to everyone who his rider was. A heavy body on gangly legs and over-sized paws did make him a bit clumsy, and while still young he was prone to excitement while forgetting his poor coordination, which usually resulted in him tripping himself up in dramatic fashion.
Weyrlinghood had its own trials, and more than once he ended up at odds with T'vil, the bronze weyrling whose nose he'd broken in Candidacy, mostly when the slightly older boy tried to talk down to him or any of the female weyrlings who'd Impressed green- and even some of the males for not trying hard enough to Impress higher. It was annoying, put lightly, and Zi'lor had little patience in dealing with the better-than-everyone attitude simply because he had Impressed bronze. There were no more physical disagreements, more for the sake of their dragons than through restraint, but snide remarks and cool glances were all too common until T'vil finished his training and graduated, leaving the ranks of weyrlings thankfully not long after Zi'lor had entered.
It gave him a chance to relax, to not have to deal with the irritating rider's traditionalist ways, and in the coming months he came to enjoy the other weyrlings of his class, to create friendships and memories with both the other riders and their dragons. One of them, a female greenrider by the name of Cirisa, would also be the one who's green Asriath caught after their graduation, and she was the one to birth his first child, a boy they named Cilor.
Just after the birth of his son, his sister Corani was transferred to Fort Weyr, one of several offered to give the hardening gold egg the best choice among Candidates for her to pick; she did not Impress, but chose to remain at the Weyr regardless. In time, she would age out of Candidacy and take up the duties of weyrfolk, culminating in being offered and accepting the rank of Headwoman, which she holds to this day.
Zi'lor carried on with duties, but with the lack of Thread it meant little more than practices designed to keep the riders from going soft, and much of his time was spent with family and friends, attending the occasional Hatching at another Weyr, and enjoying the Flights Asriath participated in, which from time to time resulted in a new child. Certainly one to desire to be involved in the child's life, so long as the mother was willing, it wasn't an uncommon sight to see him or Asriath entertaining a weyrbrat or two, to give their mother a chance to take a moment to herself.
It was his hope to see them become riders, but not all of them did; his oldest, Cilor, opted to leave Candidacy in favor of pursuing an apprenticeship in Beastcraft, his mind simply more fixated on matters other than dragons, and following in his uncle Razon's footsteps. He left Benden in time as well, but a gift in the form of a blue firelizard made communication easier.
His next two both became riders, soon enough taking their place in the Wings upon graduation, and it was a joy to the man to be able to talk about the matters of dragons with his children, and his younger siblings, two of his sisters who also Impressed.
In time, three more children became riders, Impressing a blue, a green, and a bronze. Present for each one, Zi'lor is pleased to watch some of his kids become riders like he, but not all decided that that was what they wanted; Leria, twin to Liani, was mauled by a dragon in her first Hatching and she developed a fear of them, afraid that it would happen again and that she wouldn't survive the next one; she left Candidacy to help in other ways. Talor was recommended to the Harper Hall by the Weyr's Harper, where he was transferred for his sharp mind and ability to remember what he was told just once, and his skill in recalling information easily.
Six Turns ago, for the first time in their lives, Thread returned. It went badly; all the training in the world meant nothing against poor luck, and poor luck resulted in the deaths of Z'ran and Xeriath. Struck by a sizable clump and horribly scored, the two simply went between and never re-emerged. Pinarth, distraught by the loss of her life-long companion, failed to see another clump in her path and it struck her left wing, disintegrating the sail irreparably. She made it between and back out, and was caught before she fell to the ground.
Asriath took scores as well, two tangled spores clipping his right hip and another, in the same fight, catching on the outermost toe on his right hind foot. They were not bad scores, but they left their mark on his hide. The loss of his father and the injuries sunk deep into Zi'lor's brain: Threadfall was no game. The practices they'd had were for the real thing, and now it was back- and would remain a threat until he was either dead or too old to fight any more.
Pinarth, as it always happens, forgot Xeriath in a short time, a mercy for the sadness she would have had to bear otherwise, but Charina wasn't able to forget her weyrmate, the father of her children. Six Turns have just begun to heal her grief, and visits to mindhealers when the memories are too much are still common. The pair never flew Thread again, Pinarth's damaged wing made returning to the fight impossible. Zi'lor and his siblings- and his rider children- carried on, rising as often as Thread fell over the Holds that looked to them, and each Fall fought with no loss of life from his family was a heavy weight lifted. Injuries were unavoidable, but they were also part of being a rider.
Mavros' Weyrleader's request for permission to Search among Benden's Holds for Candidates was granted, and when some of the Candidates within Benden's vast classes asked for transfer- three of his own included- Zi'lor offered to take them. His plan had been to simply see them settled in, but not until he had arrived did he really understand the full extent of the small Weyr's need, and his own request to transfer, along with an older bluerider son, was put through in short order. He is still finding his place within the weyr, still learning exactly how things work around Mavros, but he's committed to learning and fitting in, and he's quickly becoming quite fond of the place.
